Prediction of tyrosinase inhibition activity using atom-based bilinear indices.

A set of novel atom-based molecular fingerprints is proposed based on a bilinear map similar to that defined in linear algebra. These molecular descriptors (MDs) are proposed as a new means of molecular parametrization easily calculated from 2D molecular information. The nonstochastic and stochastic molecular indices match molecular structure provided by molecular topology by using the kth nonstochastic and stochastic graph-theoretical electronic-density matrices, M(k) and S(k), respectively. Involvement of protein kinases in the induction of NO synthase II in human DLD-1 cells

Protein phosphorylation is involved in the induction of nitric oxide synthase II (NOS II, iNOS) in several types of animal cells. Here we have investigated the possible involvement of major protein kinases in the induction of NOS II expression in human DLD-1 cells. In DLD-1 cells, interferon-γ alone induced a submaximal NOS II expression; a cytokine mixture consisting of interferon-γ, tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β produced maximal NOS II induction. Smoking-related cues elicit craving and mesocorticolimbic brain activation in smokers. Severity of nicotine dependence seems to moderate cue reactivity, but the direction and mechanisms of its influence remains unclear. Although tobacco control policies demand a ban on tobacco advertising, cue reactivity studies in smokers so far have not employed tobacco advertisement as experimental stimuli. Comparison of Paroxetine and Maprotiline in Minor Depression

Whilst the efficacy of paroxetine has been demonstrated in MDD, its clinical utility in minor depression has not been established. This study assesses the antidepressant efficacy of paroxetine in patients meeting RDC criteria for minor depression. All patients scored 13 points on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) at baseline. After a 3 day washout period, patients were randomised to receive paroxetine 20–40mg/day or maprotiline 100-150mg/day, dose being titrated according to clinical response after 3 weeks treatment at the lower doses. Differential gene expression in p53-mediated G(1) arrest of human fibroblasts after gamma-irradiation or N-phosphoacetyl-L-aspartate treatment.

In human fibroblasts, N:-phosphoacetyl-L-aspartate (PALA) and gamma-radiation induce reversible and irreversible p53-mediated G(1) cell cycle arrest, respectively. By coupling the premature chromosome condensation technique to fluorescence in situ hybridization, we found no evidence of DNA damage after PALA treatment. We used representational difference analysis (cDNA-RDA) to study changes in gene expression after PALA treatment and gamma-radiation in normal human fibroblasts. GAP-43 (growth-associated protein of 43 kDa; also known as neuromodulin, P-57, B-50 and F-1) is a neuronal calmodulin binding protein and a major protein kinase C (PKC) substrate in mammalian brain. Here we describe the phosphorylation by and the site specificity of different PKC isotypes. The conventional PKC beta 1 and the novel PKCs delta and epsilon effectively phosphorylated recombinant GAP-43 in vitro; atypical PKC zeta did not.
