Representing the Haitian diaspora in Russell Banks’s Continental Drift, from Port-de-Paix to Little Haiti: a celebration of the margins
2021
International audience; Russell Banks’s 1985 novel Continental Drift tells the intertwined stories of Bob Dubois, a white American man who decides to try his luck in Florida, and the Haitian Vanise Dorsinville, who is forced to leave her island with her son and her nephew to flee Jean-Claude Duvalier’s dictatorial presidency. In this paper, I study how, in the chapters dedicated to the Haitian diaspora, Banks chooses to adopt an ex-centric point of view to give a voice to those whose history and culture have largely been ignored by American society and literature. Vanise is a figure of in-betweenness, caught between Haiti and the United States, between land and ocean, and even between life …
On the side of the marginals: the character of Ahmed in The Tower of Defense (1978) of Copy
2018
Copi, writer, playwright and draughtsman Ar- gentino settles in Paris in 1962 until his death in 1987. The experience of exile and wandering marks the personal and creative trajectory of this intercultural artist. Indeed, a whole series of vulnerable and marginal characters swarm in their particular universe and subvesivo. In this space of the excluded, the figure of the immi- grant Maghreb in France, embodied in the cha- racter of Ahmed, acquires all its significance. In this work we will try to analyse the symbolic value of Ahmed, heir to the colonial past mar- ked by rejection, which appears in the Teatro de Copi, specifically in La Défense Tour (1978). Ahmed’s image traces an invisible …
QUALE RIGENERAZIONE?
2021
We start from the assumption that culture is what man assimilates, modifies and transforms, to which he contributes with his work, adding to and preserving the historical heritage. The sum of heritage diversities and values gives cultural uniqueness to the coexistence of the communities that make up each territory. Our main task, the task of each one of us who with an educated eye understands the meaning and value of heritage, must be directed towards committing ourselves not only to be actors in the present historical moment in which such testimonies survive, but to be authors of practices of preservation and enhancement. We cannot learn culture just by looking at its symbols, but by livin…
Commoning of territorial heritage and tools of participated sustainability for the production and enhancement of agro-environmental public goods
2021
AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to analyze how the commoning heritage processes find application for the production of agro-environmental public goods in contexts of high socio-economic marginality and environmental vulnerability, characterized by abandonment and from the consumption of agricultural land for food use. The purpose is to understand how these processes are able to influence, at local level, the governance processes for the implementation of environmental protection strategies. The survey made it possible to verify how the commoning processes aimed at the production of agro-environmental goods generate territorial resilience, understood as a community competence able to st…
Creating and sustaining local entrepreneurs: a Schumpeterian view of economic growth
2010
In his Theory of economic development and Business cycles Joseph Schumpeter explained the long and short-run importance of an economy’s credit system to the vitality of entrepreneurship. Famously, the entrepreneur is the key figure in the process of innovating the structure of an economy, according to Schumpeter, which is the secret to the long term growth record of capitalist economies. In this project we use Schumpeter’s ideas about the relationship between credit, innovation, and growth in order to evaluate the current state of this relationship in the Mediterranean region, using Sicily as a case study. Based on the case of Sicily we then suggest ways in which local, as opposed to global…
Kuka minä olen? Monikulttuuristen opiskelijoiden identiteettipuhetta
2008
Young people with immigrant backgrounds follow different paths to acculturate. Some integrate into the new society so that they cannot be singled out from the majority; others maintain their ethnic culture in addition to adopting values of the larger society. Alternatively, some immigrant youth distance themselves from both their parents' culture and new one. The challenge for second generation immigrants is that they have to make a double transition to adulthood. Immigrant adolescents develop an identity as members of their own group, and to varying degrees, as members of the lager society. Because of the variety of influences and opportunities they face in making choices on these issues, …
GREEN ECONOMY: THE DEVELOPMENT OF MARGINAL AREAS IN THE HORIZON 2020 STRATEGY
2014
Bioeconomy refers to a system based on the smart utilization of biological resources based on sources from land and sea as industrial input and production of food. The Bioeconomy will also contribute to limiting the negative impacts on the environment, reduce the heavy dependency on fossil resources, mitigate climate change and move Europe towards a post-petroleum society. The work aims to investigate how the territorial marginality linked to socio-economic disparities can be a competitive advantage for the challenges proposed by the bioeconomy innovation strategy. An example of a Sicilian bio-cluster is indicated for a significant product differentiation and functional integration of agric…
