Should CT scan be performed when CRP is elevated after colorectal surgery? Results from the inflammatory markers after colorectal surgery study.

2017

Summary Introduction Serum concentration of C-reactive protein (CRP) that exceeds a pre-defined threshold between the 3rd and 5th postoperative day is a reliable marker of infectious complications after colorectal surgery. However, the optimal strategy to follow when a high CRP is found has not been defined. The aim of this study was to analyze the usefulness of computed tomography (CT) scan in this situation in a prospective cohort of patients following colorectal surgery. Methods Between November 2011 and April 2015, patients at two surgical centers who had undergone elective colorectal resection with anastomosis and who had a CRP > 12.5 mg/dL on the 4th postoperative day (POD) were prosp…

Transmural distribution of biochemical markers of total protein and collagen synthesis, myocardial contraction speed and capillary density in the rat…

1988

The effect of angiotensin II-induced hypertension on selected biochemical parameters was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats. Angiotensin II infusion at rates of 41.7 micrograms h-1 kg-1 and 12.5 micrograms h-1 kg-1 for 2, 5, 10 and 15 days elevated the systolic blood pressure from 143 +/- 7 mmHg to 215-230 mmHg (P less than 0.001) and 185-195 mmHg (P less than 0.001), respectively. The left ventricular weight/body weight ratio increased 10-14% (P less than 0.05) and 23-32% (P less than 0.001) after 2-15 days in rats treated at the lower and higher infusion rates, respectively. Prolyl 4-hydroxylase (PH) activity, a marker of collagen synthesis, was evenly distributed in the left ventricle. PH ac…

Relationship between transforming growth factor beta1 and progression of hypertensive renal disease.

2002

In this study the role of circulating transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFbeta1) on progression of renal hypertensive disease has been investigated. Fifty consecutive outpatients with essential hypertension were enrolled and divided into three groups, according to their urinary albumin excretion (UAE). Group A comprised 10 hypertensives with UAEor=20 mg/24 h (normoalbuminuric group); Group B included 21 hypertensives with UAE20300 mg/24 h (microalbuminuric group); Group C encompassed 19 hypertensives with UAEor= 300 mg/24 h (proteinuric group). In all patients UAE by immunonephelometric assay, circulating TGFbeta1 by a solid phase specific sandwich ELISA technique, BUN and creatinine by ro…

Cholesterol levels and risk of hemorrhagic transformation after acute ischemic stroke.

2011

Background: The association between cholesterol levels and hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is still controversial. Studies investigating this issue are influenced by treatments as some are characterized by a higher risk of HT. The aim of our study was to evaluate, in a hospital-based series of patients not treated with thrombolysis, the relationship between cholesterol levels and HT. Methods: We retrospectively collected information about total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) levels at admission in a consecutive series of 240 patients with anterior ischemic stroke (IS). The TC and LDLC levels were arranged in 3 groups acc…

Plasma Acylcarnitines and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in a Mediterranean Population at High Cardiovascular Risk

Associations of NT-proBNP and parameters of mental health in depressed coronary artery disease patients

2018

Natriuretic peptides (NP) are involved in the regulation of blood pressure and blood volume, and are elevated in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). They are used as markers for illness severity, but their role in mental health is not well understood. Recently, A-type NP (ANP) has been associated with reduced anxiety in studies on cardiac patients; however, this study is the first to assess this effect for B-type NP (BNP) and for further dimensions of well-being and mental health. Depression, anxiety, and distress are more common in CAD patients than in the general population and are most likely not only influenced by psychological adaptation but also by neurobiological processes. …

Vitamin D status is linked to biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial activation in obese children.

2012

To examine vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, and serum calcium-phosphorus levels relationships to biomarkers of oxidative/nitrosative stress, inflammation, and endothelial activation, potential contributors for vascular complications in obese children.Cross-sectional clinical study of 66 obese Caucasian children aged 7 to 14 years. Cardiovascular risk factors were assessed. Malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase as measures of oxidative stress, and plasma nitrite+nitrate, urinary nitrate, and 3-nitrotyrosine as markers of nitrosative stress were measured. Adipocytokines, inflammatory molecules (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α), endothelial activati…

Polyamines are increased in obese children and are related to markers of oxidative/nitrosative stress and angiogenesis.

2011

Polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine) are polycationic amines derived from arginine, which is the precursor of nitric oxide (NO). Due to the close relationship between the metabolism of polyamines and NO metabolism, the alteration in polyamine homeostasis can affect the NO bioavailability at the endothelium. The objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that childhood obesity is associated with a significant modification of blood polyamines and to investigate the presence of correlation between these molecules, circulating markers of oxidative and nitrosative stress, and endothelial dysfunction. This was an observational analytical case-control study conducted at one terti…

No Association Between Vitamin D Status and Risk of Barrett's Esophagus or Esophageal Adenocarcinoma: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

2019

Contains fulltext : 215282.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND & AIMS: Epidemiology studies of circulating concentrations of 25 hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) and risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) have produced conflicting results. We conducted a Mendelian randomization study to determine the associations between circulating concentrations of 25(OH)D and risks of EAC and its precursor, Barrett's esophagus (BE). METHODS: We conducted a Mendelian randomization study using a 2-sample (summary data) approach. Six single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; rs3755967, rs10741657, rs12785878, rs10745742, rs8018720, and rs17216707) associated with circulating concentrations of 25(O…

Troponin I concentrations of shed blood might influence monitoring of myocardial injury after coronary operations.

2002

Abstract In a prospective study we evaluated the concentration of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and creatine kinase activities (CK) in shed mediastinal blood in the early postoperative period after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Forty seven patients who underwent first time elective CABG were studied. CTnI levels and CK activities in arterial blood and shed mediastinal blood were measured after admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and 6 h after unclamping the aorta. Mediastinal shed blood samples were drawn from 23 patients (group A) before the filter of the cardiotomy reservoir and from 24 patients (group B) behind. Additionally, both markers were measured in blood samples colle…
