Middle Miocene foraminifera from Canals (Valencia, western Mediterranean). Biostratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental aspects
2020
The age and the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the tap marls outcroppings near the locality of Canals in the south of the Valencia Province (E Spain) are discussed. Based on the planktonic foraminifera assemblages, mainly the species Globorotalia praemenardii , these tap marls are dated as Serravallian in age (middle Miocene). The analysis of the foraminiferal assemblages suggests a relatively well-ventilated uppermiddle bathyal environment, with only a moderate oxygen deficiency throughout most of the studied section. The rather cool waters indicated by the planktonic foraminifera (e.g. Globigerina bulloides ) are compatible with the decreasing temperatures trend during the middle Mioce…
Orbitally induced limestone/marlstone rhythms in the Albian—Cenomanian Cismon section (Venetian region, northern Italy): Sedimentology, calcareous an…
1996
Abstract A multidisciplinary study of the upper Albian—Cenomanian portion of the Cismon section (Venetian region, northern Italy) was undertaken in order to characterize the cyclic alternations of carbonate-rich and carbonate-poor layers and to investigate their possible origin and cyclic patterns. Limestone semicouplets are characterized by abundant radiolarians and micarbs (micron-sized calcitic fragments), common planktonic foraminifera, strong bioturbation, good oxygenation as expressed by the Mn* and V/(V+Ni) parameters, high Si/Al ratio, low K/Al, in the absence of pyrite and organic matter. The marlstone semicouplets are, on the contrary, frequently laminated, rich in pyrite and orga…
Effects of parent material on soil erosion within Mediterranean new vineyard plantations
2018
[EN] Parent material can determine specific physical and chemical soil properties and, therefore, soil erosion rates. However, for new vine plantations, there is not enough research on soil erosion assessment on different parent materials which could be helpful for agricultural management plans. The main aim of this research was to quantify soil erosion rates of two recent vineyard plantations under similar climate and land use management conditions, but on different parent materials, namely colluvium (2 years old) and marls (8 years old), located within the Les Alcusses valley vineyards in Eastern Spain. To achieve this goal, the ISUM (improved stock unearthing method) was applied. ISUM in…
Säugetiere, Fisch-Otolithen, Ostracoden, Mollusken und Charophyten aus den Süßwasser- Schichten (Oligozän) von Wolfsheim im Mainzer Becken
2000
The Suswasser-Schichten (Freshwater Beds) (Oligocene) in the Mainz Basin are a paleontologically poorly studied formation. A succession of predominantly lacustrine marls from Wolfsheim can be attributed to the Suswasser-Schichten on basis of a palaeoecological and biostratigraphic analysis of its mammal teeth, fish otoliths, ostracods, mollusks, foraminifera and charophytes. The occurrence of the mammal speciesToeniodus aff.hexalophodus andIssiodoromys minor (primitive form) enables an attribution of the Suswasser-Schichten to the reference level MP 24 of the eurasiatic mammal biostratigraphic zonation. As the reference fauna of level MP 24 is believed to occur in a lithostratigraphically m…
High-resolution clay mineralogy as a proxy for orbital tuning: example of the Hauterivian-Barremian transition in the Betic Cordillera (SE Spain).
2012
11 pages; International audience; The response of clay mineral assemblages to potential orbital forcing is tested in Mesozoic hemipelagic marl- limestone rhythmites of the Río Argos section (Betic Cordillera, Southeastern Spain). Along the section, marls are pervasively enriched in kaolinite and illite, whereas limestones are enriched in smectite-rich illite/smectite mixed-layers, suggesting that marl-limestone alternations are produced by cyclic high-frequency fluctuations of continental runoff. Spectral analyses show that clay mineral assemblages evolve accordingly to precession, obliquity and eccentricity cycles. Durations of ammonite zones are assessed at 535 kyr for the Late Hauterivia…
Palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the Pliocene fan-delta system of the Vera Basin (SE Spain): Fossil assemblages, ichnology and taphonomy
2020
Abstract The marine fossil assemblages of the Pliocene of south Spain constitute the record of the marine fauna that colonised the western part of the Mediterranean after the Messinian Salinity Crisis. This work focuses on the analysis of lithofacies and fossil assemblages including trace fossils, invertebrates, and vertebrates with special attention to taphonomic features, for interpreting palaeoenvironmental conditions in the Vera Basin (SE Spain). The sedimentary sequences of the northern region of the Vera Basin display diverse stratigraphical, sedimentological, and palaeontological features that correspond to the evolution of a fan-delta in a narrow basin. The Vera Basin was characteri…
Methane-derived carbonate conduits from the late Aptian of Salinac (Marne Bleues, Vocontian Basin, France): Petrology and biosignatures
2015
Abstract Peculiar carbonate bodies occur in distinct marl layers of the Marnes Bleues Formation (Aptian–Albian, Vocontian Basin, Southern France). The carbonate conduits exhibit pipe- or sausage-like forms and a central channel. Their sizes range between 30 and 60 cm in length and 5–10 cm in diameter. The conduit carbonates consist of automicrite authigenically formed within the sediment. Millimeter-sized aggregates of framboidal pyrite are abundant within the conduit automicrites, probably representing former colonies of sulfate reducing bacteria. The central channel reflects former pathways of reduced fluids in the carbonate conduit. Ni-enrichments at the margins of the central cavity are…
The erosional response of Calcareous soils along a climatological gradient in Southeast Spain
1998
Abstract The erosional response of calcareous soils along a climatological gradient in Alicante, SE Spain was studied. The erosional response was defined in terms of indicators obtained from field rainfall simulation experiments and laboratory studies of soil aggregation. Measurements were made at seven sites on limestones and marls between Benidorm with an annual average rainfall of 400 mm yr −1 and Coll de Rates (annual rainfall 900 mm yr −1 ). The sites were on matorral vegetation affected to varying intensities by grazing and fire. At the seven locations, soil aggregation was studied by sieving, by the single water drop test and by a Microscan particle-sizer. Rainfall simulation experim…
Middle Eocene calcareous nannofossils in the Jaca transect (South-central Pyrenees Eocene Basin, Aragón river valley, Huesca)
2020
The calcareous nanoplankton is studied from the base of the turbidite systems of the Upper Hecho Group (Jaca Basin, middle Eocene of the South-central Pyrenean Basin) up to the Gracionepel instabilities, within the Larres slope Marls. This new chronostratigraphic contribution is of crucial importance for the improvement of the detailed temporal and spatial correlation framework of the genetically related depositional systems at basin scale. The calcareous nanofossil assemblage is largely dominated by Coccolithus pelagicus , C. formous as well as different species of Reticulofenestra , accompanied by occasional specimens of several species of Sphenolithus and Chiasmolithus . The results obt…
Evidence of aerial volcanic activity during the Valanginian along the northern Tethys margin.
2009
7 pages; International audience; Stratigraphic measurement and sampling on three sections (Vergol, La Charce, and Montclus) through Valanginian deposits from the Vocontian Basin (southeastern France) reveals the occurrence of centimetre thick ochre-coloured layers, which can be correlated from one section to another. At least twelve of these are identified in sediments dated from the Pertransiens to Furcillata ammonite Zones. These horizons appear similar to previously described Oxfordian and Aptian bentonites, also from the Vocontian Basin. Clay-mineralogical and geochemical data are similar in the Valanginian ochre horizons and their enclosing marls except in one of these that shows a cla…
