The chapter analyses the way in which religious marriages and sharia courts interface with State's legal orders in some European countries, focusing on limping marriages and split of status, which derive by the existence of different and pall legal orders: the major, based on the principle of territoriality of the law, and the minor, organized on the personality of the law.

Prenuptial agreements are legal settlements by which a couple who is about to get married can establish the terms of the respective assets and economic interests during or after the dissolution of the marriage. The enforceability of such agreements, however, requires a delicate balance between the will expressed by the parties, on the one hand, and the public interest related to family, on the other. The comparison between US, English and Italian family law on that issue will clearly show that, both in common law and civil law countries, the concepts of status familiæ and private autonomy can coexist if they are observed in the light of the highest value of human dignity.

Taking cue from the words of Gabriel García Márquez, the essay analyzes a gallery of photographic images portraying “family photos”, made in Sicily between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, which are placed in an inter- mediate space between oral and written traditions becoming “biographical object”. AbstractThis paper discusses the complex relationship between material culture and gender studies from a methodological point of view, with the aim of contributing to discussions in the field of Classical archaeology. First, we provide a few historiographical benchmarks for key epistemological developments, while evidencing the methodological difficulties inherent in the variability of our interpretations of burial practices and data. Then, in a second section, a case study focuses on simple objects of daily life.
