Trunk and lower limb muscle activation in linear, circular and spin back kicks

2015

Background and Study Aim: As any martial art, taekwondo can be classified as a specialty that requires high technical skills, such as a fine motor control both in static and dynamic conditions. Practitioners predominantly use kicks with high amplitude in both combat and technique (poomse) modalities. The aim of this study was the knowledge about trunk and lower limb muscle activation according to the type of kick (circular, linear and spin back kick) in the taekwondo technique modality. Material and Methods: Twelve healthy and elite male taekwondo athletes voluntarily participated in this study. Surface electromyography (EMG) during maximal isometric voluntary contractions (MVC) and executi…

Fighting words : representations of dominant masculinity in the interviews of a mixed martial arts champion

2017

Education in moral values of JUDO school students

2019

Introduction. By linking human morality with cognitive development, Profesor Jigoro Kano was convinced that discovering knowledge and understanding it would shape the meaning of good and evil among young judokas, as well as their ability to distinguish what is good and what is bad [Kano 2005, Mifune 2004]. Problem and aim. The aim of the undertaken research was to assess the assimilation by students at the Kodokan Judo School of values, including: responsibility, righteousness, patience, lowliness, courage, and kindness, and also to check to what extent the application of the Kogi and Mondo methods increase the sensitivity of judo players to these values during training. The main problem of…

Empathy in children practising judo compared to their non-practicing peers

2019

[EN] Many authors dealing with martial arts and combat sports indicate that this form of activity contributes to limiting aggressive behavior towards other people. Contemporary psychological and pedagogical knowledge explains that empathy is one of the factors that determines a friendly and aggression-free attitude of people towards others. This study we compared the level of empathy between children practicing judo for a minimum of two years and their peers who did not practiced any martial art. Results showed higher levels of empathy in the group of judo practitioners. Judo trainers also agreed that judo participation may improve children’s emotional development (emotional self-regulation…

Why do female and male taekwondo athletes win the bout? An analysis based on the Olympic weight category and the result of the bout

2020

Combat sports such as taekwondo, where athletes compete against an opponent require control of technique and tactics, as well as knowing the optimal performance of opponents to win the bout. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyse the Olympic competitors (London Olympic Games), according to the weight category (fly, feather, light and heavy) and according to the performance in their fighting (winner vs. loser) in each gender. An observational methodology was used, following a nomothetic, follow-up and multidimensional design of 302 individual performances. The statistical analysis used an ANOVA and T Student test for comparing frequencies. The results obtained indicate signif…

Analysis of DRD2 Gene Polymorphism in the Context of Personality Traits in a Group of Athletes

2021

The presented study showed the relationship between dopamine receptor gene polymorphism and personality traits in athletes training in martial arts. The effects of rapid weight loss on skeletal muscle in judo athletes

2020

Abstract Objective To observe the effect of rapid weight loss (RWL) methods over 3 days on muscle damage in judokas. Methods Eighteen judokas participated in this crossover study, meaning that judo athletes were subjected to exercise-only phase (4 days) and RWL phase (3 days). Subjects were tested for myoglobin, creatine kinase, aldolase, hemoglobin, and hematocrit values on seven consecutive days. These biomarkers served as indicators of acute muscle damage. Results During the exercise-only phase, no significant changes were observed. Myoglobin (Mb) (p < 0.001), creatine kinase (CK) (p < 0.001) and aldolase (ALD) (p < 0.001) significantly increased only during the RWL phase, as we…

Patterns of rapid weight loss in elite sambo athletes

2021

Abstract Background Rapid weight loss (RWL) is commonly practiced in combat sports. Both magnitude and methods used to induce RWL are largely similar among combat sports, but currently, there is no data on RWL methodology used by sambo athletes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine RWL procedures sambo athletes apply to lose weight rapidly. Methods The sample consisted of 199 participants, of which 132 males and 67 females who participated in the World Sambo Championship 2020 held in Novi Sad, Serbia. Each participant received RWL questionnaire that was available in multiple languages, and every participant was instructed how to fill it out. Results Almost 87% of sambo particip…
