Making Telescopes and Partying with the Stars: Amateur Astronomy in Spain during Franco’s Dictatorship
2016
Franco’s dictatorship was characterized by an official narrative that criminalized the liberal tradition of previous periods. Such a discourse defined an ideologically correct science that censured the subordination of Spanish science to foreign influence and sought to create a new scientific tradition. However, recent studies have revised these aims and suggest that there was a continuity of scientific and technological programmes and practices before and after the Spanish Civil War. This paper contributes to these investigations with further evidence, focusing on several practices that characterized the development of amateur astronomy during this period. Special attention is paid to the…

Augusto Del Noce: ideologia e politica nell’epoca della secolarizzazione
2021
This essay focuses on the way in which Marxism acts in the European reality, relating its effects in the scenario of the age of secularization. The paradox consists in the fact that Marxian thought becomes an unconscious ally of the bourgeois spirit, that is, divulging the logic of consumerism and a secular…
Giuseppe Salvioli
2012
2020
In the last decades the interest of philosophers and political scientists in Marx’s thinking is growing to recover those aspects of his theory that are believed to be still valid: above all, the aspiration to social justice. In this perspective, it is important to reflect on the relationship between the Marxian conception of the State and the law, and the totali- tarian State that arose after the Bolshevik revolution in Russia. Marx’s thesis, rejecting the Rule of Law and human rights as functional to the domination of the capitalist class, legitimised an instrumental conception of law and the model of political centralisation, which was provided for in the Leninist programme and then imple…

Different meanings of ´knowledge as commodity` in the context of higher education
2013
Commodification has been and still is one of the key processes within capitalist market economies. Since the 1970s, different forms of knowledge have increasingly been subjected to this process. In this paper the commodification of knowledge in the field of higher education is defined in a broad sense as an example of the intensive enlargement of capitalism. I argue that knowledge shares some features of public goods and can be subjected to commodification both as an educational product and academic research itself. However, the simple dichotomy of public vs. private good is not nuanced enough to understand the status of knowledge within higher education. How to reconstruct this dichotomy,…
