Hieracium pollinense (Asteraceae), an endemic species to the Pollino National Park (Southern Italy) rediscovered

2017

Abstract The presence of Hieracium pollinense Zahn in Italy is confirmed here after 132 years since its first description based on a single collection made in 1877 in the Mt. Pollino. It is a calcicolous species, so far represented by one population, belongs to the H. sect. Villosa. In line with the IUCN criteria its conservation status assessment is “endangered”.

New insights into Late Devonian vertebrates and associated fauna from the Cuche Formation (Floresta Massif, Colombia)

2019

New vertebrate remains are reported from the Late Devonian (?Frasnian) Cuche Formation of northeastern Colombia, including a new taxon of antiarch placoderm (Colombialepis villarroeli, gen. et sp. nov., previously reported as Asterolepis) and a new taxon of arthrodiran placoderm (Colombiaspis rinconensis, gen. et sp. nov.). We also report evidence of a stegotrachelid actinopterygian, a diplacanthid acanthodian (cf. Florestacanthus morenoi), a second antiarch placoderm (Bothriolepis sp.), a putative megalichthyid, and a putative tristichopterid. The absence of typical Euramerican markers, e.g., Asterolepis and Strepsodus, in this assemblage suggests that faunal interchange between Euramerica…

Notes on the bryophyte flora and vegetation of the central and south-western Balkans.

2013

Pugl isi, M., Campisi, P., lakus ic , D., surina, B., Di Pietro, R., Privitera, M. Notes on the bryophyte flora and vegetation of the central and south-western Balkans. Lazaroa 34: 107-116 (2013). A study on the bryophyte fl ora and vegetation was carried out in the mountains at the boundary between Al bania, Ma - cedonia and Montenegro. The study area incl uded Maja and jezerces massif (Prokl etije mts., sE Dinaric Al ps) and Mt korab (S ar-Pindos Range) in Macedonia. several records for the bryol ogical fl ora of Macedonia and Al bania are reported. In particul ar Scapania cuspiduligera and Distichium inclinatum are new records for the Al banian fl ora. In addition some bryophytic and bry…

Major palaeohydrographic changes in Alpine foreland during the Pliocene - Pleistocene

2008

International audience; The changing palaeogeographical pattern of Alpine deposits across the European forelands can be traced by identifying mineral assemblages and establishing the chronology of Pliocene-Pleistocene deposits in Alpine foreland. In the late Miocene, the upper courses of the Rhine and the Aar flowed east from the Swiss molasse plain towards the Danube. In the early Pliocene (Brunssumian, 5-3.2 Ma), these same rivers headed north-wards towards the Rhine Graben of Alsace. In the early Reuverian, these streams were captured south of the Rhine Graben by the Doubs. They ceased their northward flow and headed west to feed the Bresse Graben. This phase is dated to the Lower and Mi…

Northward bursts of the West African monsoon leading to rainfall over the Hoggar Massif, Algeria

2009

The Hoggar Massif is a comparatively populated region in the Sahara, where water supply is a critical problem due to the lack of nearby sources and unaffordable water pumping. In the present paper, we analyse the influence of the West African monsoon (WAM) on precipitation over the Hoggar during summer. We investigate (1) two rainfall events during 23-27 July 2006, accounting for almost half of the precipitation of this year, and (2) the representativity of this period with regard to ERA-40 ECMWF re-analyses (1979 to 2001). By the end of July 2006, two consecutive northward bursts of the WAM flow reached the Hoggar and caused an increase in low-level humidity. In the afternoon of these days…

Geochemical provenance analyses of Roman lava millstones north of the Alps: a study of their distribution and implications for the beginning of Roman…

2011

Abstract In Roman times, rotary querns and different types of millstones, driven either by horse-capstan or water power, were produced in the lava quarries of the quaternary volcanic Eifel region and exported to many parts of the Empire. The geographic distribution of Roman lava millstones from the Eifel region provides important information about trade patterns and, in cases of well dated millstones, also allows an estimate as to when the Roman lava quarrying in the Eifel region began. Sixty-two millstones from Germany, France and Austria were sampled and analyzed for major and trace elements by X-ray fluorescence. To determine their provenance, the millstone data was evaluated by a combin…

Structural analysis of a complex nappe sequence and late-orogenic basins from the Aegean Island of Samos, Greece

1999

The island of Samos in the Aegean Sea exposes high-pressure metamorphic rocks of the Cycladic blueschist unit which are sandwiched between the mildly blueschist-facies Kerketas nappe below and the overlying non-metamorphic Kallithea nappe. Structural and metamorphic analysis shows that deformation can generally be divided into four main stages: (1) Eocene and earliest Oligocene 0ESE‐WNW-oriented nappe stacking (D1 and D2) associated with blueschist- and transitional blueschist‐ greenschist-facies metamorphism (M1 and M2). D2 caused emplacement of the blueschist unit onto the Kerketas nappe indicating that thrusting occurred during decompression. (2) A subsequent history of Oligocene and Mio…

Fluid geochemistry in a low-enthalpy geothermal field along a sector of southern Apennines chain (Italy)

2020

Abstract The chemical and isotopic features of the fluids (water and gases) in the Lucane thermal area (southern Italy) have been investigated in order to verify their origin, water temperature in the geothermal reservoir, and to recognize the main natural processes concerning the water composition during ascent towards the surface. The Lucane geothermal system is placed in the southern sector of the Apennines chains, a seismically active area, close to the southern base of the Mt. Alpi carbonate massif. Along the study area, two main sets of high-angle faults form an almost orthogonal fault system that, as suggested by local structural geology, acts as a preferential pathway for uprising d…
