Fractal analyses reveal independent complexity and predictability of gait
2017
Locomotion is a natural task that has been assessed since decades and used as a proxy to highlight impairments of various origins. Most studies adopted classical linear analyses of spatio-temporal gait parameters. Here, we use more advanced, yet not less practical, non-linear techniques to analyse gait time series of healthy subjects. We aimed at finding more sensitive indexes related to spatio-temporal gait parameters than those previously used, with the hope to better identify abnormal locomotion. We analysed large-scale stride interval time series and mean step width in 34 participants while altering walking direction (forward vs. backward walking) and with or without galvanic vestibular…
Treatment of acute mastoiditis in children with cochlear implants
2009
Abstract Introduction Acute mastoiditis (AM) is a paediatric infectious complication that raises a specific problem in case of implanted patients. Objective To review the cases of AM in a paediatric cochlear implant (CI) programme to study its incidence and associated problems. Materials and methods A retrospective study was conducted on 248 children aged between 8 months and 14 years who underwent CI from 1994 to 2009. The demographics, clinical data and their treatment were analyzed. Results Five patients developed acute mastoiditis (2.01%), three of them with subperiosteal abscess (1.21%). The mean age of implantation was 2 years and 4 months, and the complication presented between 1 and…
Further application of the bilobed flap: the split bilobed flap for reconstruction of composite posterior auricular and mastoid defects
2006
In this article a modified bilobed flap from mastoid and lateral neck skin for reconstruction of complex defects of the posteromedial surface of the auricle and mastoid skin, with the preservation of the retroauricular sulcus, is described. Reconstruction of the postero-medial auricular surface has almost never been a concern for reconstructive surgeons. It is in fact a shaded area with little aesthetic relevance and direct closure, skin grafting and even secondary healing are used for skin cancer defects repair. Also mastoid skin defects can be repaired with simple techniques such as skin grafts or transposition flaps from the remaining mastoid skin or from the neck. On the other hand, can…
On the phylogeny and zoogeography of the leptarctines (Carnivora, Mammalia)
1982
A restudy of the skull and mandible ofLeptarctus neimenguensis Zhai from the Middle Miocene of China and the preparation of its auditory region led to the recognition of new features. The most important among them is the presence of a small suprameatal fossa partly hidden in the bony mastoid process corresponding to the structure described inPlesiogale andParagale (Schmidt-Kittler 1981) and representing the most primitive type of the mustelid middle ear.
Conservative parotidectomy in infancy and childhood
1975
Summary The indication for operations of benign tumours of the salivary glands in infancy and childhood is taken with great caution and is only partially recommended as the therapy of choice. This applies especially to hemangiomas, since spontaneous retrogression has been observed and there is the danger of damage to the facial nerve during surgery. Knowing unsatisfactory late cases of hemangiomas the author recommends conservative parotidectomy in cases of fast-growing hemangiomas. The anatomic structures in infancy, as well as the lack of pneumatisation of the mastoid process and the fragility of the cartilagineous auditory meatus should be taken into consideration during surgical explora…
Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) der Leber und des Gehirns bei hämatologisch-onkologischen Patienten mit Fieber unbekannter Ursache
1998
PURPOSE To examine the advantage of liver and brain MRI in clinically anomalous haematological patients with fever of unknown origin. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty liver MRI (T2-TSE, T2-HASTE, T1-FLASH +/- Gd dynamic) and 16 brain MRI (T2-TSE, FLAIR, T1-TSE +/- Gd) were performed searching for a focus of fever with a suspected organ system. Comparison with clinical follow-up. RESULTS A focus was detected in 11/20 liver MRI. Candidiasis (n = 3), mycobacteriosis (n = 2), relapse of haematological disease (n = 3), graft versus host disease (n = 1), non-clarified (n02). The remaining 9 cases with normal MRI were not suspicious of infectious hepatic disease during follow-up. In brain MRI, 3/16 sho…
Ear, nose and throat (ENT) involvement in zoonotic diseases: a systematic review.
2013
Electrophysiological Correlates of Change Detection during Delayed Matching Task: A Comparison of Different References
2017
Detecting the changed information between memory representation and incoming sensory inputs is a fundamental cognitive ability. By offering the promise of excellent temporal resolution, event-related potential (ERP) technique has served as a primary tool for studying this process with reference of the linked mastoid (LM). However, given that LM may distort the ERP signals, it is still undetermined whether LM is the best reference choice. The goal of the current study was to systematically compare LM, reference electrode standardization technique (REST) and average reference (AR) for assessing the ERP correlates of change detection during a delayed matching task. Colored shapes were adopted …
Chapter 9 The effects of a prepulse on the StartReact phenomenon
2006
Publisher Summary This chapter presents a study to investigate whether the inhibitory effects of the prepulse are different in the condition of motor preparation with respect to that of unexpectancy and whether the inhibition of the startle reaction by a prepulse is associated with the inhibition of the StartReact phenomenon. The chapter demonstrates that the procedure could help in ascertaining whether reflex and volitional components are actually combined in the StartReact phenomenon. Eight healthy volunteers, six men and two women, aged between 25 and 52 years were investigated and the startle reaction was recorded with surface electrodes over the right orbicularis oculi muscle and, in t…
Ausu operāciju analīze “Headline” klīnikā, kas veiktas laika posmā no 2011. gada janvāra līdz 2019. gada decembra mēnesim
2020
Attīstoties ambulatorajai aprūpei otorinolaringoloģijā ir svarīgi izvērtēt operāciju kvalitāti, pielietotā materiāla un dzirdes uzlabošanās efektivitāti. Šīs retrospektīvais pētījums sniedz ieskatu par ausu operāciju veidiem, revīzijas operāciju nepieciešamību atkarībā no operāciju tehnikas un izmantotā materiāla. Darba mērķis: Veikt ausu operāciju rezultātu analīzi pacientiem, kam veiktas operācijas “Headline” privātklīnikā laika posmā no 2011. gada janvāra līdz 2019. gada decembra mēnesim. Darba uzdevumi: 1. Izvērtēt pacientu vājdzirdību slieksni pēc gaisa vadīšanas sliekšņa (AC) no dzirdes kauliņu rekonstrukcijas pacientu audiometrijām, kas veiktas pirms un pēc operācijas. Noskaidrot ope…
