Perfect Hashing Structures for Parallel Similarity Searches

2015

International audience; Seed-based heuristics have proved to be efficient for studying similarity between genetic databases with billions of base pairs. This paper focuses on algorithms and data structures for the filtering phase in seed-based heuristics, with an emphasis on efficient parallel GPU/manycores implementa- tion. We propose a 2-stage index structure which is based on neighborhood indexing and perfect hashing techniques. This structure performs a filtering phase over the neighborhood regions around the seeds in constant time and avoid as much as possible random memory accesses and branch divergences. Moreover, it fits particularly well on parallel SIMD processors, because it requ…

On Prefix Normal Words

2011

We present a new class of binary words: the prefix normal words. They are defined by the property that for any given length $k$, no factor of length $k$ has more $a$'s than the prefix of the same length. These words arise in the context of indexing for jumbled pattern matching (a.k.a. permutation matching or Parikh vector matching), where the aim is to decide whether a string has a factor with a given multiplicity of characters, i.e., with a given Parikh vector. Using prefix normal words, we give the first non-trivial characterization of binary words having the same set of Parikh vectors of factors. We prove that the language of prefix normal words is not context-free and is strictly contai…

Data from: The oxidative cost of reproduction depends on early development oxidative stress and sex in a bird species

2016

In the early 2000’s, a new component of the cost of reproduction was proposed: oxidative stress. Since then the oxidative cost of reproduction hypothesis has, however, received mixed support. Different arguments have been provided to explain this. Among them, the lack of a life history perspective on most experimental tests was suggested. We manipulated the levels of a key intracellular antioxidant (glutathione) in captive zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) during a short period of early life and subsequently tested the oxidative cost of reproduction. Birds were allowed to mate freely in an outdoor aviary during several months. We repeatedly enlarged or reduced their broods to increase or …

Ex-post evaluation of Territorial Integrated Projects in Italy: an empirical analysis at firm level

2013

This paper focuses on the evaluation of an incentive program for firms implemented in southern Italy during the last decade. In the framework of the policy instruments aimed to reduce territorial disparities, and to support local development, territorial integrated projects (TIP) constituted a new operational mode to implement the Regional Operational Programmes. A TIP is defined as a ?set of inter-sectorial actions, closely consistent and linked among them, which converge towards the common objective of territorial development and justify a unitary implementation approach'. The resources allocated for each TIP may be aimed at three types of interventions such as infrastructures, public act…

The effect of spatial and temporal scale on camouflage in North African rodents

2022

Abstract Background matching, a common form of camouflage, is a widespread anti-predator adaptation that hinders detection or recognition by increasing the resemblance of prey to its environment. However, the natural environment is complex and both spatially and temporally variable, which constrains effective background matching as an anti-predator strategy. Here, using remote sensing data (publicly available satellite imagery), we investigated how variation of habitat parameters predicts background matching in 16 Sahara–Sahel rodent species across spatial and temporal scales. All fur colour parameters (hue, saturation and brightness) strongly matched the respective habitats of the differen…

Matching across space: evidence from Finland

2005

This paper studies spatial aspects in local labour markets in Finland from the perspective of a matching approach. The monthly data comprise 173 Local Labour Office are as over a 12-year period between January 1991 and August 2002. The basic matching function is extended to account for spatial spill-overs between the local labour markets. The role of population density in the matching process is also examined. According to results, the Finnish local labour markets suffer from a strong congestion effect among job seekers, and spatial spill-overs even strengthen the congestion. An open vacancy is filled much easier than a job seeker is employed. The results show that the matching efficiency i…

Labor market matching with application to Finnish data

2014

This thesis studies labor market matching and takes use of a matching function, which describes the technology how unemployed job seekers and vacant jobs search, meet and form new employment relationships. The goal of the study is twofold: First is to provide a comprehensive critical review of previous literature covering both micro models as well as empirical applications. Major limitations in empirical studies are imperfect measures of variables as well as inability to account for all relevant factors making results methodology-sensitive. The second contribution is to estimate a matching function for Finland using annual data from 2006-2012 and thus giving the most recent knowledge on the…

Information transmission under an experimental approach

2015
