Regularized Euler-alpha motion of an infinite array of vortex sheets
2016
We consider the Euler- $$\alpha $$ regularization of the Birkhoff–Rott equation and compare its solutions with the dynamics of the non regularized vortex-sheet. For a flow induced by an infinite array of planar vortex-sheets we analyze the complex singularities of the solutions.Through the singularity tracking method we show that the regularized solution has several complex singularities that approach the real axis. We relate their presence to the formation of two high-curvature points in the vortex sheet during the roll-up phenomenon.
Existence results for a nonlinear nonautonomous transmission problem via domain perturbation
2021
In this paper we study the existence and the analytic dependence upon domain perturbation of the solutions of a nonlinear nonautonomous transmission problem for the Laplace equation. The problem is defined in a pair of sets consisting of a perforated domain and an inclusion whose shape is determined by a suitable diffeomorphism $\phi$. First we analyse the case in which the inclusion is a fixed domain. Then we will perturb the inclusion and study the arising boundary value problem and the dependence of a specific family of solutions upon the perturbation parameter $\phi$.
APPROXIMATE INERTIAL MANIFOLDS FOR THERMODIFFUSION EQUATIONS
2004
In this paper, we consider the two dimensional equations of thermohydraulics, i.e. the coupled system of equations of fluid and temperature in the Boussinesq approximation. We construct a family of approximate Inertial Manifolds whose order decreases exponentially fast with respect to the dimension of the manifold. We give the explicit expression of the order of the constructed manifolds.
A general nonexistence result for inhomogeneous semilinear wave equations with double damping and potential terms
2021
Abstract We investigate the large-time behavior of solutions for a class of inhomogeneous semilinear wave equations involving double damping and potential terms. Namely, we first establish a general criterium for the absence of global weak solutions. Next, some special cases of potential and inhomogeneous terms are studied. In particular, when the inhomogeneous term depends only on the variable space, the Fujita critical exponent and the second critical exponent in the sense of Lee and Ni are derived.
An invariant analytic orthonormalization procedure with applications
2007
We apply the orthonormalization procedure previously introduced by two of us and adopted in connection with coherent states to Gabor frames and other examples. For instance, for Gabor frames we show how to construct $g(x)\in L^2(\Bbb{R})$ in such a way the functions $g_{\underline n}(x)=e^{ian_1x}g(x+an_2)$, $\underline n\in\Bbb{Z}^2$ and $a$ some positive real number, are mutually orthogonal. We discuss in some details the role of the lattice naturally associated to the procedure in this analysis.
Numerical study of a multiscale expansion of the Korteweg de Vries equation and Painlev\'e-II equation
2007
The Cauchy problem for the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with small dispersion of order $\e^2$, $\e\ll 1$, is characterized by the appearance of a zone of rapid modulated oscillations. These oscillations are approximately described by the elliptic solution of KdV where the amplitude, wave-number and frequency are not constant but evolve according to the Whitham equations. Whereas the difference between the KdV and the asymptotic solution decreases as $\epsilon$ in the interior of the Whitham oscillatory zone, it is known to be only of order $\epsilon^{1/3}$ near the leading edge of this zone. To obtain a more accurate description near the leading edge of the oscillatory zone we present a…
Effective thermal conductivity of superuid helium: Laminar, turbulent and ballistic regimes
2016
Abstract In this paper we extend previous results on the effective thermal conductivity of liquid helium II in cylindrical channels to rectangular channels with high aspect ratio. The aim is to compare the results in the laminar regime, the turbulent regime and the ballistic regime, all of them obtained within a single mesoscopic formalism of heat transport, with heat flux as an independent variable.
On the critical behavior for inhomogeneous wave inequalities with Hardy potential in an exterior domain
2021
Abstract We study the wave inequality with a Hardy potential ∂ t t u − Δ u + λ | x | 2 u ≥ | u | p in ( 0 , ∞ ) × Ω , $$\begin{array}{} \displaystyle \partial_{tt}u-{\it\Delta} u+\frac{\lambda}{|x|^2}u\geq |u|^p\quad \mbox{in } (0,\infty)\times {\it\Omega}, \end{array}$$ where Ω is the exterior of the unit ball in ℝ N , N ≥ 2, p > 1, and λ ≥ − N − 2 2 2 $\begin{array}{} \displaystyle \left(\frac{N-2}{2}\right)^2 \end{array}$ , under the inhomogeneous boundary condition α ∂ u ∂ ν ( t , x ) + β u ( t , x ) ≥ w ( x ) on ( 0 , ∞ ) × ∂ Ω , $$\begin{array}{} \displaystyle \alpha \frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu}(t,x)+\beta u(t,x)\geq w(x)\quad\mbox{on } (0,\infty)\times \partial{\it\Omega}, \e…
Wavelet-like orthonormal bases for the lowest Landau level
1994
As a first step in the description of a two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field, such as encountered in the fractional quantum Hall effect, we discuss a general procedure for constructing an orthonormal basis for the lowest Landau level, starting from an arbitrary orthonormal basis in L2(R). We discuss in detail two relevant examples coming from wavelet analysis, the Haar and the Littlewood-Paley bases.
Two-Parameters Pseudo-Bosons
2010
We construct a two-parameters example of {\em pseudo-bosons}, and we show that they are not regular, in the sense previously introduced by the author. In particular, we show that two biorthogonal bases of $\Lc^2(\Bbb R)$ can be constructed, which are not Riesz bases, in general.
