The Role of Sharing Practise and Dematerialized Services in Smart Cities
2016
Measure of a limestone weathering degree using Laser Scanner.
2013
The weathering degree of the building materials and natural stones is generally quantified as the decrement of some mechanical features that can be measured experimentally by means of compressive tests or point load tests in the laboratory or Schmidt hammer tests carried out in situ. Such destructive or damaging tests are unacceptable in case of cultural heritage since even small amounts of damage must be avoided. This work shows a correlation between Schmidt hammer rebound values and the reflectivity that is detected by means of terrestrial scanner laser; therefore it allows assessing the weathering degree of buildings or stones in situ. The results demonstrate that such an investigation c…
Ultra-fast-prototyping of PMMA structures for micro-engineering applications: Choosing the right material
2017
Machining of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by laser has been extensively studied in engineering research for several applications including microfluidic manufacturing and rapid prototyping. However, very few investigations have taken into consideration the wide range of physico-chemical characteristics of commercially available PMMA that can often affect the quality of the laser-machined structures. These characteristics are often ignored, with many manufacturing publications focusing on a single source of PMMA. To understand the different bonding strengths and laser-cut qualities in the context of our ultra-fast prototyping technique, four types of PMMA have been examined. Molecular wei…
Algorithms and Organizing
2022
Abstract Algorithms are a ubiquitous part of organizations as they enable, guide, and restrict organizing at the level of everyday interactions. This essay focuses on algorithms and organizing by reviewing the literature on algorithms in organizations, examining the viewpoint of relationality and relational agency on algorithms and organizing, exploring the properties of algorithms, and concluding what these mean from an organizational communication viewpoint. Algorithms need data to be collected. The data are always biased, and algorithms exclude everything that is not in their code. They define what is seen as important. Their operating principles are opaque, and they are political due to…
Materialisme et linguistique chez Leopardi
1982
SUMMARYIn several of his letters Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837), much better known as a poet and a man of letters than as a linguist, says that he is writing a book on the theory and history of language. Its title should have been Paralelo delle cinque lingue. As it happens, he did not write the book, but left a considerable number of notes in his intellectual diary, the Zibaldone, which he kept from 1817 to 1832. The paper investigates the relationship between Leopardi's linguistic theory and his materialistic philosophy. Leopardi, who was acquainted with the theories of Locke, Condillac, and Destutt de Tracy, envisaged the formation of words as an inseparable part of the formation of ideas …
The Myth of Eros in Michael Field’s Sapphic Project: from a New Materialism to a Tragic Determinism
2020

MICROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES (SEM AND OM) AND ANALYTICAL APPROACH TO CHARACTERIZE CONSTITUTIVE MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE OF THE WOODEN FRAMES IN SICILY
2015
Nowadays artworks traditionally included in the category of applied or decorative arts are considered at the same level of fine arts getting over the old definition of minor art. According to this consideration an increasing number of studies and paper deals with the decorative arts and the Observatory for Decorative Arts in Italy “Maria Accascina” (OADI) was settled within the University of Palermo in order to study them. Nevertheless most studies deal with artistic and historic issues of applied arts and just few concern with the technique used, at least in the southern part of Italy. This paper is a systematic research concerning the constitutive materials and the executive techniques of…
