USE OF FOAMED END-OF-WASTE PLASTIC AGGREGATES AS INTERNAL CURING WATER RESERVOIR INTO A CEMENTITIOUS MORTAR
2017
Shrinkage phenomena represent an important issue for cementitious materials. There are several procedures able to reduce shrinkage phenomena, in particular, external and internal curing. The latter consider the possibility to add water reservoir that are able to release water during the curing period. In this study, porous plastic aggregates were used as internal curing water reservoir.
Reliability and Fabrication of Molds for Nanoimprinting
2010
During the last decade there has been a growing attention to nanoscaled materials and to the related technologies to produce them. The problems to overcome in the manufacturing of these kinds of items increase dramatically on decreasing the dimension of the devices. In this sense, the scientific research has been strongly stimulated to try to improve and optimize all the critical issues. One of the most attractive fields in nanomanufacturing is related to nanoimprinting, i.e. to the possibility to transfer a nanoscaled pattern from a mold to another substrate. In this technology, among the others, there are two main critical steps: the preparation of a good mold and the use of a correct rel…
Photovoltaic performance of amorphous silicon flexible solar modules under mechanical loading
2007
The applications of photovoltaic devices can be significantly expanded by directly integrating them into structures. Solar cells integrated into structures can help to power a variety of devices such as structural monitoring sensors and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, little work has been reported in the literature on the performance of solar cells under deformation. Thus, a thorough investigation on the photovoltaic behavior of solar modules under mechanical loading is necessary in order to provide the optimal integration conditions for practical applications. The photovoltaic performance of commercially available amorphous silicon solar modules was tested under applied mechanica…

2018
Durability of flax-basalt hybrid composites for marine applications
2015
The aim of the present work is to evaluate the influence of external layers of mat basalt on the durability behaviour and performances of flax/epoxy laminates. To this scope, long-term aging tests were performed to evaluate the durability of the two different laminates in critical environmental conditions. In particular, Flax composites were constituted by ten layers of bidirectional flax fabric whereas hybrid laminates (i.e. Flax-Basalt) were produced by replacing four external layers of bidirectional flax with four layers of basalt mat. Both laminates had a total average thickness equal to 3 mm. The samples were exposed to critical environmental conditions following the ASTM B 117 standar…
The "Fossa della Garofala" in Palermo: a geological site rich in cultural heritage
2008
The Fossa della Garofala is a short, narrow valley, enclosed by sub-vertical banks, which was carved out by the Kemonia creek on the calcarenitic table that makes up the bedrock of the Plain of Palermo. It forms the outermost hem of the Conca d’Oro landscape where, set in an urban area, geologic and geomorphologic features of value join historical cultural values dating from the Punic period to the XIX century. This combination places the entire area in one of the most significant, albeit little known, pages of history: the history of traditional suburban landscape. This rare synthesis of natural and anthropic landscapes offers the opportunity to create theme itineraries of great cultural a…
