“SAGOME” IN SICILY: SUBJECTS, FUNCTIONS, TECHNIQUES AND THE CASE STUDY OF NICOSIA
2016
This article analyzes the iconographic subjects, the practical functions and the compositional techniques of a particular form of artistic representation that was popular between the 18th and 19th centuries: these are the painted “sagome” (cut-outs) found in Sicily. Particular attention is paid to a series of six paintings, unknown until now, executed on shaped wooden panels and painted on both sides, which are stored in the library of the Convent of the Capuchin Friars Minor of Nicosia (Enna).

Characterization of serpottas' stuccos by means of simultaneous thermal analysis: Preliminary results
2015
In this paper the Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (STA), i.e. thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, was used as a diagnostic tool to better understand the matter composition of some very valuable artworks the Serpottas’ stuccoes in Palermo. Particularly the STA was used in order to exclude the presence of an unusual calcium-bearing magnesium carbonate, and the thermal data were also used to quantify the magnesite to calcite ratio. The latter was investigated in order to evaluate the amount of magnesium in the lime used as binder as during 17th and 18th century in Sicily magnesium rich lime was indicated as the most valuable binder probably because this kind of lime has a higher…

Sub-micron structured Polymethyl Methacrylate/Acrylonitrile-Butadiene rubber blends obtained via gamma radiation induced “in situ” polymerisation
2004
The morphology and properties of PMMA/rubber blends, obtained through gamma radiation induced “in situ” polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of small quantities of an acrylonitrile–butadiene based rubber (ABN), are presented. Different systems have been obtained by irradiating at a fixed irradiation dose rate and temperature, varying the integrated dose. All the blends obtained were characterized with respect to their melt state and solid state dynamic-mechanical response and mechanical tensile properties. In particular, the effect on the blend properties of prolonging the irradiation time was investigated. Furthermore, a morphological characterization through atomic …
Le aviorimesse di Pierluigi Nervi a Marsala: correlazioni tra le diverse modalità di esecuzione e lo stato di conservazione
2009
This work deals with the composition and the state of conservation of the concrete of two hangars designed and built by Pier Luigi Nervi in 1940-1941. The interest in this project is related both to the use of on site prefabrication for so large structures (45x55 m plan) and to some peculiarities of the mix design, in particular the aggregate/binder ratio and the lithological composition of the aggregates. The study has been performed by means of X ray diffractometry, optical microscopy in trasmitted light on thin sections, ionic chromatography and carbonation tests. The twofold aim is to assess the conservation condition of concrete after 67 years of ageing in a marine spray environment an…
Vanadium dioxide and gold nanocomposite films for glazing application
2009
Vanadium dioxide is a material with great potential as an intelligent glazing material. The technology is based on a metal to semiconductor transition (MST) where there is an associated structural change from the higher temperature rutile structure to the lower temperature monoclinic structure. This structural transition results in significant changes in optical properties and electrical conductivity. Hybrid aerosol assisted and atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition methodology has been utilised, to produce thin films of gold nano-particle vanadium dioxide nanocomposites. Good surface coverage is observed comparable to that of APCVD processes and a variety of different film thickn…

The assessment over time of the performance of jute-basalt hybrid composites for cladding panels
2017
The technology of dry assembly to produce multi-layer panels is an efficient alternative to traditional systems. Eco-sustainable systems are increasingly studied, particularly fiber reinforced composites for external cladding, based on natural fibers. Nevertheless, durability data on these composites are still lacking, being this is a really actual theme, especially for their potential use in outdoor applications. In this way, hybridization of natural fibers with mineral fibers as basalt ones appears promising. In the present paper, the performance of jute-reinforced laminate was compared with those of two jute/basalt reinforced hybrid laminates. The laminates were manufactured by means of …
