The durability of basalt fibres reinforced polymer (BFRP)
2014
The technology of dry assembly for the production of multi-layer panels has evolved over the past 30 years, becoming an efficient alternative to traditional systems. The direction taken by the market has been increasingly drawn to eco-sustainable systems and in this way, the interest in the use of laminated composite panels for cladding, basalt fibres based. Basalt is a natural rock, silica based, which is produced through a variety of industrial processes into filaments, wool, chopped strands and fabrics. It is characterized by high resistance in chemically aggressive environments, high fire resistance, high mechanical resistance to compression and bending. The study focuses on two types o…

Effect of sheep wool fibres on thermal-insulation and mechanical properties of cement matrix
2015
The use of sheep wool as reinforcement of cement in order to produce mortar or plaster involves several advantages for environment and energy. Moreover, in several regions it is treated as a waste and, consequently, its employ is characterized by low cost. Aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of wool fibres on thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of cement. The samples were prepared using wool fibres, obtained from a breed of Sicilian sheep, with three different length (i.e. 1 mm, 6 mm and 20 mm). Moreover, in order to evaluate the influence of fibre content, the samples were prepared by varying the fibres weight fraction up to maximum level. The thermal conductivity of …
The restoration of the North-East corner columns of Santa Maria La Nova the cloister in Monreale, Italy
2022
Lo scopo della presente ricerca è quello di descrivere i risultati dello studio, con la rappresentazione tramite scanner laser 3D, e del restauro scientifico, che ha previsto anche una reintegrazione, del gruppo di colonne posto nell'angolo Nord-Est del famoso chiostro dell'Abbazia di Santa Maria La Nova in Monreale, vicino Palermo, Italia (ultimo quarto del XII secolo) The purpose of the present research is to describe the results of the study, with 3D laser scanner representation, and scientific restoration, which also included reintegration, of the group of columns located in the northeast corner of the famous cloister of the Abbey of Santa Maria La Nova in Monreale, near Palermo, Italy …
Improvement of actinorhodin production yield in Streptomyces coelicolor by immobilized-cell cultivations by using PCL- and PLA-based films
2016
Actinomycetes are Gram-positive bacteria producing most of naturally occurring antibiotics (Donadio et al., 2010). At industrial level, antibiotics are produced by submerged fermentations where the actinomycete filamentous morphology negatively affects bioproductivity (van Dissel et al., 2014). Microporous membranes for bacterial cell-immobilization were already proven increasing bioproductivity in Streptomyces coelicolor, that is a model actinomycete producing the blue pigmented actinorhodin (ACT) antibiotic (Scaffaro et al., 2016). To develop an immobilized-cell bioreactor system, different kinds of polycaprolactone (PCL) and polylactic acid (PLA) films were produced by an electrospinning…
Polysaccharide-based supramolecular bicomponent eutectogels as sustainable antioxidant materials
2023
In this work, we obtained supramolecular gels in deep eutectic solvents (DES) from polysaccharides like chitosan and chitosan : cellulose composites. We thoroughly characterized our gels by determining the minimum gelation concentration, as well as their porosity and swelling. We also investigated their mechanical properties by rheology, and morphology by scanning electron measurements. These properties were mainly influenced by the number of hydrogen bond sites on the hydrogen bond donor, (HBD), while FTIR-ATR investigation suggested that, upon gelation, cholinium cations interpose between polysaccharide chains affecting interchain hydrogen bonding. Our gels also exhibited self-healing and…

Environmental degradation of polymers for cultural heritage
2018
Plastic materials are used both for the protection of cultural heritage and as material for artworks. As for other materials, the durability and the maintenance of their initial properties are fundamental for the use of these materials. For the protection of the cultural heritage (particularly for stone artworks) the main important properties are the hydrophobicity, the UV transparency and the water vapour permeability that must be maintained even after a long exposure to the environmental conditions (UV irradiation, rain, temperature variations, etc.). When the polymers are used for the production of an artwork, the most important characteristics are the maintenance of the aesthetical appe…
