Thymus vulgaris Essential Oil and Hydro-Alcoholic Solutions to Counteract Wooden Artwork Microbial Colonization
2021
Aromatic plants represent a source of natural products with medicinal properties, and are also utilized in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Recently, the need for eco-compatible and non-toxic products, safe for both the environment and human health, have been proposed for the sustainable conservation of historic–artistic artifacts. In this study, in order to counteract microbial colonization (Aspergillus sp., Streptomyces sp., Micrococcus sp.) on wooden artwork surfaces, Thymus vulgaris L. (Lamiaceae) essential oil (EO) and hydro-alcoholic (HA) solutions were applied in a polyphasic approach. The antimicrobial activities of EO and HA solutions were preliminarily assessed by agar disc…

2013
The article describes the operation carried out for the production of samples in unfired clay. Starting from the analysis of the materials used in the execution of the mixture, shaping and drying. The first group of samples, includes three types: clay and water; clay, water and sand; clay, water, sand and straw. In the second group of samples was added 5% of nanodiscs of clay.

Prove di resistenza a compressione e a flessione dei campioni in terracruda
2013
The article presents the results of tests of compressive strength and flexural strength under concentrated load of samples in unfired clay with and without the addition of nanodisks of clay studied for the PRIN 2008 entitled Nanotechnology for bricks earthen: tradition, innovation and sustainability.
Structure and form. Changes of state in architecture – from modern to contemporary
2016
The relationship between the terms Structure and Form, while expressing a consideration on the tectonic component of composition, registers a cyclical evolution of the archi-tecture of the building. The solidity of the Modern, the liquidity of "post-modern conditions", the evaporation of the contemporary aesthetics of disappearance outline a return to a solid state of the matter outlining the basic assumption of formal research in architecture in the sculptural mass of the building.
Functional Thin Films for Glazing Application
2009
Vanadium dioxide is a thermochromic material with great potential for use in intelligent glazing. The thermochromic properties result from a metal to semiconductor transition (MST) where there is an associated structural change from the higher temperature rutile structure to the lower temperature monoclinic structure. This structural transition results in significant changes in optical properties and electrical conductivity. Various chemical vapour deposition (CVD) methodologies have been utilised, to produce thin films of vanadium dioxide. Different strategies are presented for the inclusion of metal dopants and the production of nano-composites. The use of a surfactant molecule, tetraocty…
Effect of plasma treatment on the properties of Arundo Donax L. leaf fibres and its bio-based epoxy composites: A preliminary study
2016
Abstract A preliminary investigation about the effect of plasma treatment on the properties of natural fibres extracted from the leaf of the giant reed Arundo Donax L. and their compatibility with a bio-based epoxy resin is performed. To this aim, the influence of plasma treatment on the functional groups and on the thermal behaviour of fibre were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Moreover, the mechanical characterization of fibres was performed through fibre tensile tests. Short randomly oriented fibres/bio-based epoxy composites were manufactured by hand lay-up method followed by compression moulding, varying both fibres weight cont…
Effect of Plasma Treatment on Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Marble Powder/Epoxy Composites
2016
The aim of this work was to study the effect of the plasma treatment on the behavior of composite structures reinforced with marble powder, obtained as processing waste in the “Custonaci” basin. Moreover, different filler amounts (i.e. 10%wt, 20%, 30% in weight) were investigated. For the mechanical characterization, tensile and flexural quasi-static tests, Charpy impact test, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) were performed. For the thermal stability, thermogravimetric analysis was carried out. Finally, real density and fraction of voids were measured. It was observed that untreated marble powder, on one hand, increases tensile and flexural stiffness and improves thermal stabi…
