Controlling Thermal Flows through Natural Materials in Building Construction Sector
2019
Nowadays, the attention about the building sustainability is increasingly emerging, because of the major responsibility of the building field on the environmental degradation: both in terms of energy consumption from non-renewable sources and the raw materials impoverishment. In addition, the level of comfort required by users is growing and the thermal insulation of buildings becomes the key element for the reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions, both in the case of new construction and of the existing ones. The heat load of a building depends on the presence of insulating material which defines the performance of the building envelope. The main purpose of this work is both to i…
INFLUENCE OF CORK POWDER GRAINSIZE IN THERMAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CORK-NHL MORTARS
2019
Cork is a unique material, characterized by small closed cell structures, high insulating properties, very low density, high fire resistance and a very good durability after simple thermal treatment. The main use of cork in the production of stopper and insulating panels obtained with cork grains and a polymeric resin. Usually cork grains used in panel production have a grainsize around 1-2 mm. In this work cork grains have been used as aggregates for natural hydraulic lime mortars by reducing grainsize distribution. Cork grainsize has been reduced by means of a knife mill and divided in three different distributions, i.e. 1, 0.5 and 0.25mm. Mortars have been prepared according to NHL to co…
Effect of the UV exposure on the creep behaviour of PLA based green composites
2018
Green composites made of biodegradable matrices and lignocellulosic fibers are receiving growing attention from both academia and industries. Despite a wide literature can be found about mechanical behavior of such kind of composites, at the best of our knowledge, only limited information is available about their creep behavior [1] and no papers have been yet done on the effect of ultraviolet exposition. The tensile creep behavior at 40 °C of PLA based composites, containing flax and jute twill weave woven fabrics, produced through compression molding, was investigated. As preliminary characterization, quasi-static tensile tests were carried out on virgin and UV aged composites
Welcome to the candy shop! Conflicting representations of black masculinity
2014
AbstractMainstream hip hop videos have long been known for their images of scantily clad women, extreme materialism, and misogynist and homophobic lyrics. In this article I focus on how rapper 50 Cent's masculinity is constructed and expressed through music, lyrics and images in his video ‘Candy Shop’ from 2005. This is a classically modelled hip hop video, replete with markers of hypermasculinity: fancy cars, ‘bling’, and lots of beautiful, sexually available women. Several scholars have discussed how women are exploited in videos like this and reduced to props for the male star. However, few have explored how this macho masculinity is constructed. Through a close reading of this video, us…
Slikovnica kao predmet
2019
Based on recent studies on materiality, picturebook research, and cognitive studies, this paper investigates how children may perceive picturebooks as objects and their material properties. In this regard, we emphasise three dimensions of picturebooks as objects and relate them to developmental stages. The first dimension concerns the materials the picturebooks are composed of, such as paper, cardboard, wood, plastics, and cloth. The second dimension refers to the type of book, e.g. hardbacks, sets of cardboard sheets, fanfold books, pop-up books, and even hybrid objects such as books which are toys at the same time. Finally, this study focuses on the types of actions that are associated wi…
Disassembling the classroom – an ethnographic approach to the materiality of education
2012
The ethnography of education is challenged by the materiality of the classroom. Ethnographic accounts of school lessons mostly highlight language and interaction and offer no suitable methodology for researching objects and their role in the classroom. Moreover, objects are part of complex and interwoven assemblages involving human actors, practices and things. As such, their contribution to human practices often remains unnoticed in the background of routine activities. In order to make the materiality of practice available to ethnographic observation, we thus have to analytically disassemble these assemblages. An ethnographic approach that draws on practice theory and concepts developed i…
