2018

The interpretation of the philosophical thought of Karl Marx given in the second half of the twentieth century canonically distinguishes between the works of the youth period and those of the maturity. Even if only a few interpreters have supported the thesis of the existence of “two Marx”, one opposed to the other, the attention given to some posthumous writings (the Critique of the Hegelian Philosophy of Public Law and the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 in particular) inevitably led to neglect the writings of the younger Marx. However, the years spent in Berlin (1836-41) are decisive, both for the experience gained alongside the young Hegelians and for the discovery of philo…

Kyyhky ja opetuskone : inhimillisen ja ei-inhimillisen yhteenliittymiä B. F. Skinnerin behaviorismissa

2015

Reading the Body in Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho (1991) : Confusing Signs and Signifiers

2009

http://www.graat.fr/roche.pdf; International audience; This article examines how matter, in Ellis's scandalous novel, is read according to the texts that inform the yuppie's etiquette, labeling the body as either “healthy” or “unhealthy.” Basing his argumentation on the works of Judith Butler, Luce Irigaray, Jacques Lacan, Clément Rosset and D.W. Winnicott, the author argues that the body is perceived as a sign of something when it is actually an effect of the signifier, and that the novel's excess makes the invisible workings of what Michel Foucault called “power” extremely visible. The novel thus undermines the yuppie/psychopath-narrator's essentialist quest. Indeed, the psychopath attemp…

Do Videogames Simulate? Virtuality and Imitation in the Philosophy of Simulation

2015

Simulation. The concept of simulation has been contested in academia since its proliferation in the 1960s. This is hardly the case in videogame research, the subject of which is commonly discussed as a simulation or something that simulates with little analytical consideration of the term’s other scientific roles. Comparison. The article compares the simulation of videogame research to the ways in which other scientific sectors utilize the term. Problematic science communication. It turns out that videogame research has found an eccentric use for simulation with none or little relation to the term’s scientific (knowledge-driven) and etymological (imitational) predecessors. This becomes a p…

The reception of Marx's thought in the young Habermas

2018

ABSTRACT The article analyzes the influence of Marx's thought on the for…

Anxious and status signaling: Examining the link between attachment style and status consumption and the mediating role of materialistic values

2021

Attachment theory has recently been recognized as a potentially fruitful avenue for studying consumer behavior. However, few studies have examined the relationship between attachment styles and consumer preferences. Based on literature suggesting that individuals with an anxious attachment style have a particularly strong need for attention, we conducted two studies with a total sample of over 2,000 participants, which tested and found that anxiously attached consumers displayed a higher propensity to purchase status-signaling goods than their counterparts with secure attachment styles. This effect was mediated by materialistic values, such that participants with an anxious attachment style…

Welcome to the candy shop! Conflicting representations of black masculinity

2014

AbstractMainstream hip hop videos have long been known for their images of scantily clad women, extreme materialism, and misogynist and homophobic lyrics. In this article I focus on how rapper 50 Cent's masculinity is constructed and expressed through music, lyrics and images in his video ‘Candy Shop’ from 2005. This is a classically modelled hip hop video, replete with markers of hypermasculinity: fancy cars, ‘bling’, and lots of beautiful, sexually available women. Several scholars have discussed how women are exploited in videos like this and reduced to props for the male star. However, few have explored how this macho masculinity is constructed. Through a close reading of this video, us…

Culture and team production

2018

Abstract This paper addresses theoretically the question whether culture has an effect on economic performance in team production, and what would be an optimal team culture. The members of a team are guided both by economic incentives and by personal norms, weighed according to their prevailing level of materialism. We assume that personal norms evolve following a dynamic driven by a combination of psychological mechanisms such as consistency and conformism. The different vectors of materialism, consistency and conformism shared by the group result in a continuum of cultures characterized by different combinations of individualism and collectivism. Team culture turns out to be a fundamental…
