This paper examines some examples (taken from research conducted over the years) that show students’ linguistic attitudes in geometry tasks. The examples are framed within the Theory of Objectification with reference to the notion of sensuous cognition, semiotic means of objectification and levels of generality. We show the struggle students live, at higher levels of generality, in intertwining natural language, specific language and the spontaneous use of geometrical figures, bound to perception and kinaesthetic activity. Physical activity improves health and may delay the onset of several chronic diseases. For women in particular, the rate of these diseases accelerates at middle age; therefore it is important to identify the determinants of health-enhancing physical activity during midlife in this population. In this study, we focused on determinants that are unique to the female sex, such as childbearing and menopause. Comparison of inter-trial recovery times for the determination of critical power and W' in cycling

Critical Power (CP) and W’ are often determined using multi-day testing protocols. To investigate this cumbersome testing method, the purpose of this study was to compare the differences between the conventional use of a 24-h inter-trial recovery time with those of 3 h and 30 min for the determination of CP and W’. A systematic review of functional numeracy measures for 9–12 -year-olds: Validity and reliability evidence

This systematic review aimed to summarize the characteristics and the measurement properties of functional numeracy measures developed for use by teachers among 9–12-year-old children with or without mathematical learning difficulties. A systematic search from five databases was conducted based on pre-defined criteria. PRISMA guidelines were followed for reporting the results. The terminology and classification of measurement properties adopted by the COSMIN taxonomy was used. Twenty-one studies of 18 measures met the inclusion criteria. The roles of achievement-related behaviours and parental beliefs in children´s mathematical performance

This study aimed to investigate the developmental dynamics between children's mathematical performance, the task-focused versus task-avoidant behaviours they show in the classroom, and their parents' beliefs concerning their school competence. The mathematical performance of 111 six- to seven-year-old children was tested, and their task-focused versus task-avoidant behaviours were rated by their teachers four times during their first school year. During the talk we will give a necessary and sufficient condition for the uniqueness of a penalized least squares estimator whose penalty term is a polyhedral norm. Our results cover many methods including the OSCAR, SLOPE and LASSO estimators as well as the related method of basis pursuit. The geometrical condition for uniqueness involves how the row span of the design matrix intersects the faces of the dual normunit ball. Theoretical results on sparsity by LASSO and basis pursuit estimators are deduced from this condition via the characterization of accessible sign vectors for these two methods.

Vegetation Patterns in the Hyperbolic Klausmeier Model with Secondary Seed Dispersal

This work focuses on the dynamics of vegetation stripes in sloped semi-arid environments in the presence of secondary seed dispersal and inertial effects. To this aim, a hyperbolic generalization of the Klausmeier model that encloses the advective downhill transport of plant biomass is taken into account.
