Scale invariant line matching on the sphere

2013

International audience; This paper proposes a novel approach of line matching across images captured by different types of cameras, from perspective to omnidirectional ones. Based on the spherical mapping, this method utilizes spherical SIFT point features to boost line matching and searches line correspondences using an affine invariant measure of similarity. It permits to unify the commonest cameras and to process heterogeneous images with the least distortion of visual information.

On the estimation of the fatigue cycle distribution from spectral density data

1999

This paper deals with the fatigue life prediction of components and structures subjected to random fatigue, i.e. to cyclic loading whose amplitude varies in an essentially random manner. In particular, this study concentrates on the general problem of directly relating fatigue cycle distribution to the power spectral density (PSD) by means of closed-form expressions that avoid expensive digital simulations of the stress process. At present, all the methods proposed to achieve this objective are based on the use of a single parameter of the PSD. In this work, by numerical simulations and theoretical considerations, it is shown that the statistical distribution of fatigue cycles depends on f…

Crowd-Averse Robust Mean-Field Games: Approximation via State Space Extension

2016

We consider a population of dynamic agents, also referred to as players. The state of each player evolves according to a linear stochastic differential equation driven by a Brownian motion and under the influence of a control and an adversarial disturbance. Every player minimizes a cost functional which involves quadratic terms on state and control plus a cross-coupling mean-field term measuring the congestion resulting from the collective behavior, which motivates the term “crowd-averse.” Motivations for this model are analyzed and discussed in three main contexts: a stock market application, a production engineering example, and a dynamic demand management problem in power systems. For th…

New results on stability analysis and stabilization of time-delay continuous Markovian jump systems with partially known rates matrix

2015

Summary In this note, the problems of stability analysis and controller synthesis of Markovian jump systems with time-varying delay and partially known transition rates are investigated via an input–output approach. First, the system under consideration is transformed into an interconnected system, and new results on stochastic scaled small-gain condition for stochastic interconnected systems are established, which are crucial for the problems considered in this paper. Based on the system transformation and the stochastic scaled small-gain theorem, stochastic stability of the original system is examined via the stochastic version of the bounded realness of the transformed forward system. Th…

The magnitude of a product recall: offshore outsourcing vs. captive offshoring effects

2018

The escalation in product recalls in recent years is attributed to the rise of globalisation and associated challenges of offshoring. Extant SCM research suggests that product recalls have a significant negative impact on financial performance, but gaps exist relative to the managerial actions to minimise their impact. Recall response strategies have become more important in the press, given that a single recall may result in the mandatory withdrawal of millions of products from the market, with firms incurring enormous logistics costs and brand damage. In this study, we address this gap in the research, and using a measure of product recall defined as the volume of products withdrawn from …

Additively manufactured textiles and parametric modelling by generative algorithms in orthopaedic applications

2020

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to implement a new process aimed at the design and production of orthopaedic devices fully manufacturable by additive manufacturing (AM). In this context, the use of generative algorithms for parametric modelling of additively manufactured textiles (AMTs) also has been investigated, and new modelling solutions have been proposed. Design/methodology/approach A new method for the design of customised elbow orthoses has been implemented. In particular, to better customise the elbow orthosis, a generative algorithm for parametric modelling and creation of a flexible structure, typical of an AMT, has been developed. Findings To test the developed modelling a…

Graph-theoretical derivation of brain structural connectivity

2020

Brain connectivity at the single neuron level can provide fundamental insights into how information is integrated and propagated within and between brain regions. However, it is almost impossible to adequately study this problem experimentally and, despite intense efforts in the field, no mathematical description has been obtained so far. Here, we present a mathematical framework based on a graph-theoretical approach that, starting from experimental data obtained from a few small subsets of neurons, can quantitatively explain and predict the corresponding full network properties. This model also changes the paradigm with which large-scale model networks can be built, from using probabilisti…

Consensus via multi-population robust mean-field games

2017

In less prescriptive environments where individuals are told ‘what to do’\ud but not ‘how to do’, synchronization can be a byproduct of strategic thinking,\ud prediction, and local interactions. We prove this in the context of multipopulation\ud robust mean-field games. The model sheds light on a multi-scale\ud phenomenon involving fast synchronization within the same population and\ud slow inter-cluster oscillation between different populations.

On stability of linear dynamic systems with hysteresis feedback

2020

The stability of linear dynamic systems with hysteresis in feedback is considered. While the absolute stability for memoryless nonlinearities (known as Lure's problem) can be proved by the well-known circle criterion, the multivalued rate-independent hysteresis poses significant challenges for feedback systems, especially for proof of convergence to an equilibrium state correspondingly set. The dissipative behavior of clockwise input-output hysteresis is considered with two boundary cases of energy losses at reversal cycles. For upper boundary cases of maximal (parallelogram shape) hysteresis loop, an equivalent transformation of the closed-loop system is provided. This allows for the appli…

A predictive learning approach to optimal load sharing in energy management systems

2019

Given the total power demand, $P_{d}$ , current practice of equal load sharing in the process industry is to distribute the load among power supply units and machines (e.g., diesel/aas/wind turbines) in proportion to the maximum power, i.e., $P_{i}=\frac{p_{\max}^{i}}{\sum_{j}P_{\max}^{j}}P_{d}$ , where $P_{\max}^{i}$ denotes the maximum power of the ithunit. However, the efficiency of power supply units, vary in time and are highly individual, even in the case of units from same brand and model. Thus, by considering and utilizing these individual differences, it is possible to share the load in a more fuel/cost/energy optimal manner. To capture this potential, the work presented in this pa…
