Quasihyperbolic boundary conditions and capacity: Hölder continuity of quasiconformal mappings

2001

We prove that quasiconformal maps onto domains which satisfy a suitable growth condition on the quasihyperbolic metric are uniformly continuous when the source domain is equipped with the internal metric. The obtained modulus of continuity and the growth assumption on the quasihyperbolic metric are shown to be essentially sharp. As a tool, we prove a new capacity estimate.

Luminescence of coesite

2015

Coesite is a polymorph modification of crystalline silicon dioxide with a tetrahedral structure. The luminescence of a single crystal of synthetic coesite was studied under excitation using x-rays, an electron beam, and excimer lasers KrF (248 nm), ArF (193 nm) and F2 (157 nm). Luminescence bands in the regions of 2.5 eV and 4.4 eV appear. The blue band is dependent on temperature and is composed of decay kinetics. Three main decay times are revealed, exhibiting luminescence of a different nature in the same range of the spectrum. One is in the ns range of time with a time constant of about 2 ns. The two other decay times are in the regions of 5 μs and 700 μs. The 5 μs component is also see…

The Minimal Phenomenal Experience questionnaire (MPE-92M): Towards a phenomenological profile of “pure awareness” experiences in meditators

2021

Objective To develop a fine-grained phenomenological analysis of “pure awareness” experiences in meditators. Methods An online survey in five language versions (German, English, French, Spanish, Italian) collected data from January to March 2020. A total of 92 questionnaire items on a visual analogue scale were submitted to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results Out of 3627 submitted responses, 1403 were usable. Participants had a median age of 52 years (range: 17–88) and were evenly split between men and women (48.5% vs 50.0%). The majority of meditators practiced regularly (77.3%), were free of diagnosed mental disorders (92.4%) and did not regularly use any psychoactive s…

A prospective study on an innovative online forum for peer reviewing of surgical science

2017

Background Peer review is important to the scientific process. However, the present system has been criticised and accused of bias, lack of transparency, failure to detect significant breakthrough and error. At the British Journal of Surgery (BJS), after surveying authors' and reviewers' opinions on peer review, we piloted an open online forum with the aim of improving the peer review process. Methods In December 2014, a web-based survey assessing attitudes towards open online review was sent to reviewers with a BJS account in Scholar One. From April to June 2015, authors were invited to allow their manuscripts to undergo online peer review in addition to the standard peer review process. T…

Statistical performance of a multiclass bulk production queueing system

2004

Abstract In this paper, we discuss how to statistically analyze a make-to-stock production system the behaviour of which depends on a multiclass bulk queueing system. The performance of the system is evaluated in terms of the different demands of products, processing times and, mainly, through the finished product inventory and other related measures that quantify the queueing effects in the system. A numerical example which illustrates the applicability of the results in an inventory scenario is also discussed.

Comparison and analysis of the revenue-based adaptive queuing models

2006

This paper presents several adaptive resource sharing models that use a revenue criterion to allocate bandwidth in an optimal way. The models ensure QoS requirements of data flows and, at the same time, maximize the total revenue by adjusting parameters of the underlying schedulers. Besides, the adaptive models eliminate the need to find the optimal static weight values because they are calculated dynamically. The simulation consists of several cases that analyse the models and the way they provide the required QoS guarantees. The simulation reveals that the installation of the adaptive model increases the total revenue and ensures the QoS requirements for all service classes. The paper als…

Random Early Detection for Congestion Avoidance in Wired Networks: A Discretized Pursuit Learning-Automata-Like Solution

2010

Permission from IEEE must be obtained for all other users, including reprinting/ republishing this material for advertising or promotional purposes, creating new collective works for resale or redistribution to servers or lists, or reuse of any copyrighted components of this work in other works In this paper, we present a learning-automata-like (LAL) mechanism for congestion avoidance in wired networks. Our algorithm, named as LAL random early detection (LALRED), is founded on the principles of the operations of existing RED con…

Alcune riflessioni storico-critiche sul cosiddetto “paradosso di Duval”

2013

In 1993 a famous article by Raymond Duval highlighted a simple fact: students confuse the mathematical object O, that they are trying to build cognitively, with one of its semiotic representations R(O); he explained that this confusion was due to a sort of inevitable paradox: only someone who has already built O, can recognize R(O) as a representation of O and not as an object in itself. This idea has been extremely influential for researchers in the following years. However, many scholars of semiotics have emphasized the same phenomenon, even if in not quite the same words; in this paper we are going to mention some of them.

Coloring Linear Algebra

2016

[EN] We present an example of how we can introduce basic concepts on Linear Algebra in a first course of an Engineering School. We use the RGB pattern color which allows us to decompose a color into three primary colors (namely, red, green, blue). By using this model we give a natural connexion between the additivity of the color decomposition and the notions on linear algebra (as vector space, linear combination and convex linear span of vectors). To visualize these connexions we use Geogebra.
