Robin problems with general potential and double resonance

2017

Abstract We consider a semilinear elliptic problem with Robin boundary condition and an indefinite and unbounded potential. The reaction term is a Caratheodory function exhibiting linear growth near ± ∞ . We assume that double resonance occurs with respect to any positive spectral interval. Using variational tools and critical groups, we show that the problem has a nontrivial smooth solution.

Compartmental analysis of dynamic nuclear medicine data: Models and identifiability

Compartmental models based on tracer mass balance are extensively used in clinical and pre-clinical nuclear medicine in order to obtain quantitative information on tracer metabolism in the biological tissue. This paper is the first of a series of two that deal with the problem of tracer coefficient estimation via compartmental modelling in an inverse problem framework. Specifically, here we discuss the identifiability problem for a general n-dimension compartmental system and provide uniqueness results in the case of two-compartment and three-compartment compartmental models. Unconditionally stable meshless integration of time-domain Maxwell’s curl equations

Grid based methods coupled with an explicit approach for the evolution in time are traditionally adopted in solving PDEs in computational electromagnetics. The discretization in space with a grid covering the problem domain and a stability step size restriction, must be accepted. Evidence is given that efforts need for overcoming these heavy constraints. The connectivity laws among the points scattered in the problem domain can be avoided by using meshless methods. A brief overview on the numerical behavior of an implicit meshless method and an outlook to future challenges

In this paper recent results on a leapfrog ADI meshless formulation are reported and some future challenges are addressed. The method benefits from the elimination of the meshing task from the pre-processing stage in space and it is unconditionally stable in time. Further improvements come from the ease of implementation, which makes computer codes very flexible in contrast to mesh based solver ones. The method requires only nodes at scattered locations and a function and its derivatives are approximated by means of a kernel representation. A novel numerical meshless approach for electric potential estimation in transcranial stimulation

In this paper, a first application of the method of fundamental solutions in estimating the electric potential and the spatial current density distribution in the brain due to transcranial stimulation, is presented. The coupled boundary value p roblems for the electric potential are solved in a meshless way, so avoiding the use of grid based numerical methods. A multi-spherical geometry is considered and numerical results are discussed.

On Regulated Solutions of Impulsive Differential Equations with Variable Times

In this paper we investigate the unified theory for solutions of differential equations without impulses and with impulses, even at variable times, allowing the presence of beating phenomena, in the space of regulated functions. One of the aims of the paper is to give sufficient conditions to ensure that a regulated solution of an impulsive problem is globally defined.

Pricing Reinsurance Contracts

Pricing and hedging insurance contracts is hard to perform if we subscribe to the hypotheses of the celebrated Black and Scholes model. Incomplete market models allow for the relaxation of hypotheses that are unrealistic for insurance and reinsurance contracts. One such assumption is the tradeability of the underlying asset. To overcome this drawback, we propose in this chapter a stochastic programming model leading to a superhedging portfolio whose final value is at least equal to the insurance final liability. Abstract At each point in an immersed surface in ℝ4 there is a curvature ellipse in the normal plane which codifies all the local second order geometry of the surface. Recently, at the singular point of a corank 1 singular surface in ℝ3, a curvature parabola in the normal plane which codifies all the local second order geometry has been defined. When projecting a regular surface in ℝ4 to ℝ3 in a tangent direction, corank 1 singularities appear generically. Quantum mechanical settings inspired by RLC circuits

In some recent papers several authors used electronic circuits to construct loss and gain systems. This is particularly interesting in the context of PT-quantum mechanics, where this kind of effects appears quite naturally. The electronic circuits used so far are simple, but not so much. Surprisingly enough, a rather trivial RLC circuit can be analyzed with the same perspective and it produces a variety of unexpected results, both from a mathematical and on a physical side.
