Mathematical skills in undergraduate students. A ten-year survey of a Plant Physiology course

2012

In the health and life sciences, as well as in other scientific disciplines, problem solving depends on mathematical skills. However, significant deficiencies are commonly found in this regard in undergraduate students. In an attempt to understand the underlying causes and to improve students' performance, this paper reports a ten-year survey (2000-2010) on mathematical skills of undergraduate Spanish students enrolled in a Plant Physiology course, based on data from tests performed throughout this time period. The results show that the percentage of correct answers decreases for questions requiring some mathematical skills, particularly those needing some calculations. Interestingly, perce…

Mathematical literacy in Plant Physiology undergraduates: results of interventions aimed at improving students' performance

2013

The importance of mathematical literacy in any scientific career is widely recognized. However, various studies report lack of numeracy and mathematical literacy in students from various countries. In the present work we present a detailed study of the mathematical literacy of Spanish undergraduate students of Biology enrolled in a Plant Physiology course. We have performed individual analyses of results obtained during the period 2000-2011, for questions in the examinations requiring and not requiring mathematical skills. Additionally, we present the outcome of two interventions introduced with the aim of helping students improve their prospects for success in the course. Our results confi…

Marginal contribution, reciprocity and equity in segregated groups: Bounded rationality and selforganization in social networks

2007

We study the formation of social networks that are based on local interaction and simple rule following. Agents evaluate the profitability of link formation on the basis of the Myerson-Shapley principle that payoffs come from the marginal contribution they make to coalitions. The NP-hard problem associated with the Myerson-Shapley value is replaced by a boundedly rational 'spatially' myopic process. Agents consider payoffs from direct links with their neighbours (level 1), which can include indirect payoffs from neighbours' neighbours (level 2) and up to M-levels that are far from global. Agents dynamically break away from the neighbour to whom they make the least marginal contribution. Com…

Web mining based on Growing Hierarchical Self-Organizing Maps: Analysis of a real citizen web portal☆

2008

This work is focused on the usage analysis of a citizen web portal, Infoville XXI (http://www.infoville.es) by means of Self-Organizing Maps (SOM). In this paper, a variant of the classical SOM has been used, the so-called Growing Hierarchical SOM (GHSOM). The GHSOM is able to find an optimal architecture of the SOM in a few iterations. There are also other variants which allow to find an optimal architecture, but they tend to need a long time for training, especially in the case of complex data sets. Another relevant contribution of the paper is the new visualization of the patterns in the hierarchical structure. Results show that GHSOM is a powerful and versatile tool to extract relevant …

Sur une classe d’equations du type parabolique lineaires

1996

The application of the variational method for the existence theorem, developped by J. L. Lions, for the evolution equations in Hilbert spaces to a considerably large class of systems of linear partial differential equations of parabolic type is studied by defining Hilbert spaces in relation to the elliptic operator of the system, and an example insired by the system of equations for a viscous gas is examined.

On Determinants of Integrable Operators with Shifts

2013

Integrable integral operator can be studied by means of a matrix Riemann--Hilbert problem. However, in the case of so-called integrable operators with shifts, the associated Riemann--Hilbert problem becomes operator valued and this complicates strongly the analysis. In this note, we show how to circumvent, in a very simple way, the use of such a setting while still being able to characterize the large-$x$ asymptotic behavior of the determinant associated with the operator.

Explicit form of the time operator of a gaussian stationary process

2004

We present the time operator theory in the framework of stationary stochastic processes. The main results of the paper is the derivation of the time operator acting on the Fock space associated with a discrete time gaussian stationary process.

Nonfragile Gain-Scheduled Control for Discrete-Time Stochastic Systems with Randomly Occurring Sensor Saturations

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/629621 Open Access This paper is devoted to tackling the control problem for a class of discrete-time stochastic systems with randomly occurring sensor saturations. The considered sensor saturation phenomenon is assumed to occur in a random way based on the time-varying Bernoulli distribution with measurable probability in real time. The aim of the paper is to design a nonfragile gain-scheduled controller with probability-dependent gains which can be achieved by solving a convex optimization problem via semidefinite programming method. Subsequen…

Elliptic 1-Laplacian equations with dynamical boundary conditions

2018

Abstract This paper is concerned with an evolution problem having an elliptic equation involving the 1-Laplacian operator and a dynamical boundary condition. We apply nonlinear semigroup theory to obtain existence and uniqueness results as well as a comparison principle. Our main theorem shows that the solution we found is actually a strong solution. We also compare solutions with different data.
