Wardowski conditions to the coincidence problem

2015

In this article we first discuss the existence and uniqueness of a solution for the coincidence problem: Find p ∈ X such that Tp = Sp, where X is a nonempty set, Y is a complete metric space, and T, S:X → Y are two mappings satisfying a Wardowski type condition of contractivity. Later on, we will state the convergence of the Picard-Juncgk iteration process to the above coincidence problem as well as a rate of convergence for this iteration scheme. Finally, we shall apply our results to study the existence and uniqueness of a solution as well as the convergence of the Picard-Juncgk iteration process toward the solution of a second order differential equation. Dissipation and entanglement dynamics for two interacting qubits coupled to independent reservoirs

2008

We derive the master equation of a system of two coupled qubits by taking into account their interaction with two independent bosonic baths. Important features of the dynamics are brought to light, such as the structure of the stationary state at general temperatures and the behaviour of the entanglement at zero temperature, showing the phenomena of sudden death and sudden birth as well as the presence of stationary entanglement for long times. The model here presented is quite versatile and can be of interest in the study of both Josephson junction architectures and cavity-QED.

Posterior moments and quantiles for the normal location model with Laplace prior

2021

We derive explicit expressions for arbitrary moments and quantiles of the posterior distribution of the location parameter η in the normal location model with Laplace prior, and use the results to approximate the posterior distribution of sums of independent copies of η.

Hitting straight lines by compound Poisson process paths

1990

In a recent article Mallows and Nair (1989,Ann. Inst. Statist. Math.,41, 1–8) determined the probability of intersectionP{X(t)=αt for somet≥0} between a compound Poisson process {X(t), t≥0} and a straight line through the origin. Using four different approaches (direct probabilistic, via differential equations and via Laplace transforms) we extend their results to obtain the probability of intersection between {X(t), t≥0} and arbitrary lines. Also, we display a relationship with the theory of Galton-Watson processes. Additional results concern the intersections with two (or more) parallel lines.

Exact and approximate calculations for the conductivity of sandstones

1999

We analyze a three-dimensional pore space reconstruction of Fontainebleau sandstone and calculate from it the eective conductivity using local porosity theory. We compare this result with an exact calculation of the eective conductivity that solves directly the disordered Laplace equation. The prediction of local porosity theory is in good quantitative agreement with the exact result. c 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Vortex length, vortex energy and fractal dimension of superfluid turbulence at very low temperature

2010

By assuming a self-similar structure for Kelvin waves along vortex loops with successive smaller scale features, we model the fractal dimension of a superfluid vortex tangle in the zero temperature limit. Our model assumes that at each step the total energy of the vortices is conserved, but the total length can change. We obtain a relation between the fractal dimension and the exponent describing how the vortex energy per unit length changes with the length scale. This relation does not depend on the specific model, and shows that if smaller length scales make a decreasing relative contribution to the energy per unit length of vortex lines, the fractal dimension will be higher than unity. F…

A generalization of the inhomogeneity measure for point distributions to the case of finite size objects

2008

The statistical measure of spatial inhomogeneity for n points placed in chi cells each of size kxk is generalized to incorporate finite size objects like black pixels for binary patterns of size LxL. As a function of length scale k, the measure is modified in such a way that it relates to the smallest realizable value for each considered scale. To overcome the limitation of pattern partitions to scales with k being integer divisors of L we use a sliding cell-sampling approach. For given patterns, particularly in the case of clusters polydispersed in size, the comparison between the statistical measure and the entropic one reveals differences in detection of the first peak while at other sca…

Local Asymptotic Normality for Shape and Periodicity in the Drift of a Time Inhomogeneous Diffusion

2017

We consider a one-dimensional diffusion whose drift contains a deterministic periodic signal with unknown periodicity $T$ and carrying some unknown $d$-dimensional shape parameter $\theta$. We prove Local Asymptotic Normality (LAN) jointly in $\theta$ and $T$ for the statistical experiment arising from continuous observation of this diffusion. The local scale turns out to be $n^{-1/2}$ for the shape parameter and $n^{-3/2}$ for the periodicity which generalizes known results about LAN when either $\theta$ or $T$ is assumed to be known.

Generation of Entangled Two-Photon Binomial States in Two Spatially Separate Cavities

2006

We propose a conditional scheme to generate entangled two-photon generalized binomial states inside two separate single-mode high-Q cavities. This scheme requires that the two cavities are initially prepared in entangled one-photon generalized binomial states and exploits the passage of two appropriately prepared two-level atoms one in each cavity. The measurement of the ground state of both atoms is finally required when they exit the cavities. We also give a brief evaluation of the experimental feasibility of the scheme.

Dynamics of a map with a power-law tail

2008

We analyze a one-dimensional piecewise continuous discrete model proposed originally in studies on population ecology. The map is composed of a linear part and a power-law decreasing piece, and has three parameters. The system presents both regular and chaotic behavior. We study numerically and, in part, analytically different bifurcation structures. Particularly interesting is the description of the abrupt transition order-to-chaos mediated by an attractor made of an infinite number of limit cycles with only a finite number of different periods. It is shown that the power-law piece in the map is at the origin of this type of bifurcation. The system exhibits interior crises and crisis-induc…
