The impact of local communities on the school development - a case study examining expectations and inclusion on a systemic level
2019
This paper presents one specific case of our school development research project. It shed light on the issue of a local community and the structure of expectations, which may limit the school’s development and students’ development. Because this project takes place in Scandinavia one needs first to understand the schooling policy called “one school for all”, which stresses inclusion. In addition, the phenomenon Langfeldt describes as “the quality of schools is created locally” will be explained, as well as the nature of expectations. The data collected is used to show the case’s limiting behavior, the balancing expectation structure between the school and the local community. Based on the c…
eParticipation:Designing and Managing Political Discussion Forums
2010
Author's version of an article published in Social Science Computer Review, 2010, 28 (4), 403-426. Also available from the publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0894439309341626 eParticipation is the extension and transformation of participation in political deliberation and decision-making processes through information and communication technologies (ICTs). The most commonly found examples of eParticipation systems are political discussion forums. Although much of the discussion of these technologies is conducted in the eGovernment and eDemocracy literature, political discussion forums present a distinct set of design and management challenges, which relate directly to information systems c…
Analyzing the Effects of Lexical Cognates on Translation Properties: A Multivariate Product and Process Based Approach
2021
The translation of cognates has received renewed interest in Translation Process Research (Oster (2017) Empir Model Transl Interpret 7:23; Hansen-Schirra et al. (2017) Predicting cognate translation. In: Hansen-Schirra S, Czulo O, Hofmann S (eds) Empirical modelling of translation and interpreting. Language Science Press, Berlin, pp 3–22) but tends to be relatively time-consuming due to the manual identification of cognates and their translations. On the basis of work by Heilmann (Profiling effects of syntactic complexity in translation: a multi-method approach. PhD thesis, 2021) and the structure of the TPR-DB, we devised a relatively simple way to determine the cognate status of ST words …
Methods for defining user groups and user-adjusted information structures
1999
A common problem in the design of information systems is how to structure the information in a way that is most useful to different groups of users. This paper describes some statistical methods for revealing the structure inherent in empirical data elicited from users. It is illustrated by the application of these methods to the design of some web pages giving information about the Universitat de Valencia. Three potential user groups were identified, administrative staff, teaching staff and students. The first analysis demonstrated that users within these three groups assign relatively homogeneous structures, but that the structures assigned by the three groups are not the same, and also, …
DEVELOPMENT POLICY MONITORING ISSUES – REGIONAL AND LOCAL EXPERIENCES IN RIGA REGION
2012
Elaboration and use of development policy monitoring instruments promotes applicable and effective policy implementation and decision making, which is based on regular and systematic verification of resources, actions and results. On different policy development levels exists varied approach of defining specific aims and use of policy monitoring measures. Since activation of development monitoring issues in Latvia, some institutions have gained experience in elaboration of monitoring systems among them Riga region and its local municipalities practise various approaches using policy monitoring instruments. Specific study analyzes theoretical aspects of different development monitoring appro…
Teoría de la educación : revista interuniversitaria
2012
Family, as the first structure that receives minor, owns a big importance with regard to other educational spaces during the integral development of children. In it and through it decisive and persistent transmissions for the human being that come to realize through some parental concretes styles, take place. In this article we analyzed two approaches, from our perspective, valid for explaining the educative styles nowadays: the model of joint construction and the interactive model, with typologies and researches that have not had quite echo in other publications and those we think are outstanding to open new lines of research. Revised scientific reports are brought by Pedagogy, Psychology …
The Structure of Group Identification
2017
The concept of group identification has been widely discussed in the fields of social psychology and social ontology. The debate has been somewhat unbalanced, however. The structure, nature, and experiential status of groups have been assessed widely and from several perspectives. Instead, the concept of identification as received considerably less attention. This is why the ongoing debate threatens to be misled by various conceptual ambiguities. These ambiguities concern first and foremost the target, structure, and temporal nature of identification. The present article offers a philosophical analysis of the concept and clarifies the conceptual ambiguities haunting the debate. peerReviewed
Social Networks as an Approach to Systematic review
2019
Whether we are in the process of designing a new empirical study or our interest lies in conducting a review study, a solid literature review is needed to acquire an accurate idea of the current state of affairs with regard to a phenomenon of interest. Even if we can find contributions to the literature by entering keywords in search engines, we need tools that can help us to structure all the contributions encountered in terms of their interrelations and impact. This article presents social network analysis as such a tool. Although social network analysis is commonly thought of as a method in a particular empirical study, where individuals and groups of participants are studied, we can vie…
Guiding Student Thinking Through Teacher Questioning When Learning with Dynamic Representations
2021
Dynamic representations (e.g., dynamic geometry software GeoGebra for mathematics learning and PhET simulations for science learning) offer excellent opportunities for students to conduct investigations and to formulate explanations for the visualized phenomena. In order for this to be effective, students need guidance, for example, for planning their investigations and reflecting on their actions. One way to support students is by prompting them by using questions that are adapted to the students’ current situation. This chapter focuses on how pre-service teachers provide guidance for students through questioning and by both structuring and problematizing student learning. Data comes from …
Analysis of Word Problems in Primary Education Mathematics Textbooks in Spain
2021
A textbook constitutes the hegemonic material of the educational institution. It acts as a mediator between the official curriculum and the educational practice. Given its potential influence in the classroom, this study analyzes the treatment of word problems included in the mathematics textbooks published by the publishing houses with the greatest diffusion in Spain at every primary education grade. Three variables were analyzed: their semantic structure, their degree of challenge, and their situational context. The results indicate that most of the problems included in textbooks are characterized by low complexity and variability regarding their semantic structure. They are also characte…
