A non-linear Ritz method for the analysis of low velocity impact induced dynamics in variable angle tow composite laminates
2021
Abstract Variable angle tow (VAT) laminates feature composite layers reinforced by fibres following continuous curved paths and offer a wide structural design space for the manufacturing of composite components. In this work, a formulation for the analysis of the impact-induced dynamics in VAT laminated plates is proposed, implemented and tested in this work. The method is based on the adoption of first order shear deformation kinematics and includes von Karman non-linear strains. The discrete system is obtained by employing a pb-2 Ritz series expansion into the Hamilton’s variational statement, while the impact loading is modelled through Hertzian contact law. The resulting non-linear gove…
Evaluation of building heating loads with dimensional analysis: Application of the Buckingham π theorem
2017
Abstract A detailed assessment of building energy performance requires a large amount of input data concerning building typology, environmental conditions, envelope thermophysical properties, geometry, control strategies, and several other parameters. Notwithstanding, the use of specialized software tools poses many challenges in regards to the retrieval of reliable and detailed information, setting a steep learning curve for engineers and energy managers. To speed up the preliminary assessment phase, it might be more convenient to resort to a simplified model that allows the evaluation of heating energy demand with a good level of accuracy and without excessive computational cost or user e…
SIMULATION OF THE HEAT TRANSPORT PROBLEMS WITH RADIATION IN PLATE
2001
In the literature [1 -5 ] simple and effective algorithms for mathematical modelling processes of distribution of heat in multilayered spaces are created. In the given work the way of improvement o f accuracy of algorithms is considered at approximation of integrals derivatives more the supreme orders are used.
Viscoelasticity: an electrical point of view
2014
Time dependent hereditary properties of complex materials are well described by power-laws with real order exponent. This experimental observation and analogous electrical experiments, yield a description of these properties by using fractional-order operators. In this paper, elasto-viscous and visco-elastic behaviors of fractional order hereditary materials are firstly described by using fractional mathematical operators, based on recent work of some of the authors. Then, electrical analogous models are introduced. Viscoelastic models have elastic and viscous components which can be obtained by combining springs and dashpots: these models can be equivalently viewed as electrical circuits, …
The F-pure threshold of quasi-homogeneous polynomials
2018
Abstract Inspired by the work of Bhatt and Singh [3] we compute the F-pure threshold of quasi-homogeneous polynomials. We first consider the case of a curve given by a quasi-homogeneous polynomial f in three variables x , y , z of degree equal to the degree of xyz and then we proceed with the general case of a Calabi–Yau hypersurface, i.e. a hypersurface given by a quasi-homogeneous polynomial f in n + 1 variables x 0 , … , x n of degree equal to the degree of x 0 ⋯ x n .
A study of Wigner functions for discrete-time quantum walks
2013
We perform a systematic study of the discrete time Quantum Walk on one dimension using Wigner functions, which are generalized to include the chirality (or coin) degree of freedom. In particular, we analyze the evolution of the negative volume in phase space, as a function of time, for different initial states. This negativity can be used to quantify the degree of departure of the system from a classical state. We also relate this quantity to the entanglement between the coin and walker subspaces.
Estimating the temperature evolution of foodstuffs during freezing with a 3D meshless numerical method
2015
Abstract Freezing processes are characterised by sharp changes in specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity for temperatures close to the freezing point. This leads to strong nonlinearities in the governing PDE that may be difficult to resolve using traditional numerical methods. In this work we present a meshless numerical method, based on a local Hermite radial basis function collocation approach in finite differencing mode, to allow the solution of freezing problems. By introducing a Kirchhoff transformation and solving the governing equations in Kirchhoff space, the strength of nonlinearity is reduced while preserving the structure of the heat equation. In combination with the hig…
Context-aware summary generation for Web pages
2009
General purpose search engines provide users with lists of retrieved documents in response to their queries. The common structure of list elements includes the title of a document, its URL, and small snippet from the text. Snippets are evidence of occurrences of query's keywords in the document. The length of each snippet is just a couple of lines. They cannot play a role of summaries of retrieved documents: In many cases, they are not indicative and users cannot judge on the relevancy of documents. In our approach we use ontology as context description and that ontology will be used to describe user's main interest with respect to wanted summary and help to select weighting of key words an…
65 Science reboot. Creation of an evidence-based literature by increasing the use of regional languages in science
2019
Objectives English as an International Language is widely used in science. Unfortunately, scientific information space is oversaturated by using International Language, while Regional Languages remain informatively poor. The oversaturation leads to the information overload 1–4 , reducing the quality of information and data interpretation. At the same time, non-English speaking countries publish new studies in regional journals, causing contrary effect – information deficiency in English. 5 Similarly to RCSB PDB and NCBI, the authors suggest to create a novel scientific database in order to: - Enrich the regional languages allowing them to be competitive; - Concentrate on the evidence-based …
A Framework for Opening Data and Creating Advanced Services in the Health and Social Fields
2016
Open data is publicly available data that can be universally and readily accessed, used, and redistributed. Open data holds particular potential in the health and social sectors but, presently, health and social data are often published in a ‘closed’ format. There are different tools that allow to ‘open’ data, clean, structure and process them in order to elaborate them and build advanced services but, unfortunately, there is no single tool that can be used to perform all different tasks. We believe that the availability of Open Data in the health and social fields should be greatly increased and a way for creating new health and social services should be provided. In this paper, we present …
