Mathematical modeling and competencies for biology students
2017
International audience; The research aims at introducing modeling tasks with an ultimate goal to engage students more actively into learning mathematics through tasks that are biologically 'colored'. My focus is on the individual progression (if any) of students' mathematical competencies during a sequence of modeling sessions as part of their first year mathematics. My goal is to explore the nature of progression within the competency profile of participating student, the relation between modeling processes and this progression and what transformations are applied in these sets of competencies.
A Case of Four Prospective Adult Class Teachers’ Mathematical Identity Work
2018
Research on adult students’ the mathematical identity work has not been explored so much. In this study I try to understand four prospective adult class teachers’ identity works on the basis of their learning diaries during a mathematics education course (6 ECTS). These four prospective class teachers’ reported they had negative experiences of mathematics during their school years but later in their lives the views towards mathematics had changed to a positive direction. However, the identity work during the mathematics education course revealed that life experiences had not changed the most fundamental views towards mathematics, mathematics learning and teaching. During the mathematics edu…
Software for the learning of mathematics through musical metaphors: The creation and evaluation process of PicaLab
2018
The PicaLab project proposes the design, development, and assessment of an integrated modular software solution involving sound and music, with the aim of improving mathematical learning in the third, fourth, and fifth levels of primary education in Chile. While these modular solutions were designed as resources for the classroom, students outside of that context can use them too. The process followed a methodology in several stages in order to generate multi-modal functional prototypes, together with their respective didactic guides, that link music and mathematics. These prototypes have been put through an iterative evaluation process leading up their final version. Results indicate an ex…

MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF SURFACE ROUGHNESS FOR EVALUATING THE EFFECTS OF WEDM CUTTING PARAMETERS
2020
Wire Electrical Discharge Machining is a cutting method used for obtaining parts with complex geometries or for cutting hard metals. In machining processes, it is necessary to obtain the desired surface quality in order to produce parts providing the required functioning. The surface quality also defines some mechanical properties of the product, such as wear resistance. Being such a considerable quality, surface quality is influenced by various parameters. It will be costly and time consuming to acquire the knowledge of appropriate cutting parameters. Unconventional technologies have not been sufficiently studied so far to provide such details. So, this рарer ѕeekѕ to emрhаѕіze the іmрortа…

Анализ и оптимизация устойчивости балок на сплошном упругом основании часть I (балки конечной длины) [Analysis and optimization of a beam on elastic …
2017
Problems of defining the optimal (against buckling) cross section area distribution for beams interacting with elastic foundation are considered. The stability of limited pinned beams and infinite continuous beams is analyzed. For all beams under consideration, the stability analysis is performed as for constant as for variable distributions of strength beam characteristics. The critical length is determined and the variational statement of beam stability problems is presented for this beam type. The exact solution of optimal problem is presented in the case of linear dependence of limited beam bending hardness on beam cross section area. For the case of squared and cubic dependences, the n…

The stability of limited pinned beams and infinite continuous beams is analyzed. For all beams under consideration, the stability analysis is performed as for constant as for variable distributions of strength beam characteristics. The critical length is determined and the variational statement of beam stability problems is presented for this beam type. For infinite continuous beams, the stability problems are investigated as for constant as for periodic distribution of strength characteristics. In the second case, the analysis of infinite beam can…
All-Possible-Couplings Approach to Measuring Probabilistic Context
2013
From behavioral sciences to biology to quantum mechanics, one encounters situations where (i) a system outputs several random variables in response to several inputs, (ii) for each of these responses only some of the inputs may ‘‘directly’’ influence them, but (iii) other inputs provide a ‘‘context’’ for this response by influencing its probabilistic relations to other responses. These contextual influences are very different, say, in classical kinetic theory and in the entanglement paradigm of quantum mechanics, which are traditionally interpreted as representing different forms of physical determinism. One can mathematically construct systems with other types of contextuality, whether or …
Kindergarten teachers’ accounts of their developing mathematical practice
2012
Published version of an article in the journal: ZDM. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11858-012-0422-1 This study explores kindergarten teachers’ accounts of their developing mathematical practice in the context of their participation in a developmental research project. Observations and interviews were analysed to elaborate the accounts as regards orchestrating mathematical activities in the kindergarten. A co-learning agreement was established as collaboration between the kindergarten teachers and researchers. The study reveals that the kindergarten teachers argue that they have been empowered in developing an inquiry stance towards mathematics and mathemat…
