Statistical criteria for early-stopping of support vector machines

2007

This paper proposes the use of statistical criteria for early-stopping support vector machines, both for regression and classification problems. The method basically stops the minimization of the primal functional when moments of the error signal (up to fourth order) become stationary, rather than according to a tolerance threshold of primal convergence itself. This simple strategy induces lower computational efforts and no significant differences are observed in terms of performance and sparsity.

Modelling agricultural risk in a large scale positive mathematical programming model

2020

International audience; Mathematical programming has been extensively used to account for risk in farmers' decision making. The recent development of the positive mathematical programming (PMP) has renewed the need to incorporate risk in a more robust and flexible way. Most of the existing PMP-risk models have been tested at farm-type level and for a very limited sample of farms. This paper presents and tests a novel methodology for modelling risk at individual farm level in a large scale model, called individual farm model for common agricultural policy analysis (IFM-CAP). Results show a clear trade-off between including and excluding the risk specification. Albeit both alternatives provid…

Finite Sample Efficiency and Drawbacks: An Illustration

2011

Historically, finite-sample efficiency was the first notion of optimality introduced and it is still encountered in introductory statistics texts. The definition has several drawbacks however, one being that it is restricted to the class of unbiased estimators. An example is given to illustrate this.

Evaluation of the shakedown limit load multiplier for stochastic seismic actions

2017

A new approach for the evaluation of the shakedown limit load multiplier for structures subjected to a combination of quasi-statically variable loads and seismic actions is presented. The common case of frame structures constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material is considered. The acting load history during the lifetime of the structure will be defined as a suitable combination of never ending quasi-statical loads, variable within an appropriate given domain, and stochastic seismic actions occurring for limited time interval. The proposed approach utilizes the Monte Carlo method in order to generate a suitable large number of seismic acceleration histories and the corresponding shake…

Multidisciplinary shape optimization in aerodynamics and electromagnetics using genetic algorithms

1999

SUMMARY A multiobjective multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) of two-dimensional airfoil is presented. In this paper, an approximation for the Pareto set of optimal solutions is obtained by using a genetic algorithm (GA). The first objective function is the drag coefficient. As a constraint it is required that the lift coefficient is above a given value. The CFD analysis solver is based on the finite volume discretization of the inviscid Euler equations. The second objective function is equivalent to the integral of the transverse magnetic radar cross section (RCS) over a given sector. The computational electromagnetics (CEM) wave field analysis requires the solution of a two-dimensi…

On Computational Properties of a Posteriori Error Estimates Based upon the Method of Duality Error Majorants

2004

In the present paper, we analyze computational properties of the functional type a posteriori error estimates that have been derived for elliptic type boundary-value problems by duality theory in calculus of variations. We are concerned with the ability of this type of a posteriori estimates to provide accurate upper bounds of global errors and properly indicate the distribution of local ones. These questions were analyzed on a series of boundary-value problems for linear elliptic operators of 2nd and 4th order. The theoretical results are confirmed by numerical tests in which the duality error majorant for the classical diffusion problem is compared with the standard error indicator used i…

Confidence Intervals for the Mean Based on Exponential Type Inequalities and Empirical Likelihood

2013

For independent observations, recently, it has been proposed to construct the confidence intervals for the mean using exponential type inequalities. Although this method requires much weaker assumptions than those required by the classical methods, the resulting intervals are usually too large. Still in special cases, one can find some advantage of using bounded and unbounded Bernstein inequalities. In this paper, we discuss the applicability of this approach for dependent data. Moreover, we propose to use the empirical likelihood method both in the case of independent and dependent observations for inference regarding the mean. The advantage of empirical likelihood is its Bartlett correcta…

Smart multi-carrier energy system: Optimised energy management and investment analysis

2016

This paper proposes an optimised Energy Management System for a multi-carrier hub, which integrates two energy distribution networks, for hydrogen and electricity. The economic sustainability of a real-life instantiation of such a system has been analysed as well. The Energy Management System has been developed by means of a multi-objective optimisation algorithm, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, implemented using MATLAB®. The achieved results consist in a series of set-points defining the working conditions of the plant for a chosen time horizon. Data provided by this process also show the effectiveness of the adopted optimisation approach. The financial analysis is performe…

Stochastic Approach for Optimal Positioning of Pumps As Turbines (PATs)

2021

A generic water system consists of a series of works that allow the collection, conveyance, storage and finally the distribution of water in quantities and qualities such as to satisfy the needs of end users. In places characterized by high altitude differences between the intake works and inhabited centres, the potential energy of the water is very high. This energy is attributable to high pressures, which could compromise the functionality of the pipelines

Robust control for autonomous spacecraft evacuation with model uncertainty and upper bound of performance with constraints

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/589381 This paper studies the problem of guaranteed cost control for spacecraft evacuation. The relative dynamic model is established based on Clohessy-Wiltshire (C-W) equations. The paper has taken parameter uncertainty, output tracking, disturbance attenuation, and fuel cost into consideration. The paper introduces a new Lyapunov approach, so the controller design problem can be transferred into a convex optimization problem subject to linear matrix inequality (LMI) constraints. By using the controller, the spacecraft evacuation can be …
