A contribution on the optimization strategies based on moving least squares approximation for sheet metal forming design

2012

Computer-aided procedures to design and optimize forming processes are, nowadays, crucial research topics since industrial interest in costs and times reduction is always increasing. Many researchers have faced this research challenge with various approaches. Response surface methods (RSM) are probably the most known approaches since they proved their effectiveness in the recent years. With a peculiar attention to sheet metal forming process design, RSM should offer the possibility to reduce the number of numerical simulations which in many cases means to reduce design times and complexity. Actually, the number of direct problems (FEM simulations) to be solved in order to reach good functio…

Deep Drawing Process Design: A Multi Objective Optimization Approach

2009

In sheet metal forming most of the problems are multi objective problems, generally characterized by conflicting objectives. The definition of proper parameters aimed to prevent both wrinkles and fracture is a typical example of an optimization problem in sheet metal forming characterized by conflicting goals. What is more, nowadays, a great interest would be focused on the availability of a cluster of possible optimal solutions instead of a single one, particularly in an industrial environment. Thus, the design parameters calibration, accomplishing all the objectives, is difficult and sometimes unsuccessful. In order to overcome this drawback a multi-objectives optimization procedure based…

Non-linear optimization of track layouts in loop-sorting-systems

2013

Optimization used for enhancing geometric structures iswell known. Applying obstacles to the shape optimization problemis on the other hand not very common. It requires a fast contact search algorithmand an exact continuous formulation to solve the problem robustly. This paper focuses on combining shape optimization problemswith collision avoidance constraints by which a collision detection algorithmis presented. The presentedmethod is tested against the commercial loop-sorting-system used for sorting of medium sized items. The objective is to minimize price and footprint of the system whilemaintaining its functionality. Contact constraints are in this context important to include as variou…

A thermoeconomics-based approach to the integrated optimization of design and operation for decentralised energy systems and variable load conditions

2006

The many comprehensive approaches formulated for the optimization of large industrial energy systems have been rarely applied to small and medium scale units, because of the difficulties in handling a continuously variable energy demand and of the lower margins for energy and emissions saving. Today, the growing interest for decentralised energy systems in the civil sector stimulates major efforts for the optimization of such plants, with a particular focus on the control system and on a management strategy able to exploit the opportunities existing in the free energy market. In this paper a methodology is proposed for the optimization of design and operation of variable demand systems supp…

Improving Performance of Evolutionary Algorithms with Application to Fuzzy Control of Truck Backer-Upper System

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/709027 Open access We propose a method to improve the performance of evolutionary algorithms (EA). The proposed approach defines operators which can modify the performance of EA, including Levy distribution function as a strategy parameters adaptation, calculating mean point for finding proper region of breeding offspring, and shifting strategy parameters to change the sequence of these parameters. Thereafter, a set of benchmark cost functions is utilized to compare the results of the proposed method with some other well-known algorithms.…

Implementing some Evolutionary Computing Methods for Determining the Optimal Parameters in the Turning Process

2015

In this paper, we comparatively present two heuristics search methods – Simulated Annealing and Weighted Sum Genetic Algorithm, in order to find optimal cutting parameters in turning operation. We consider five different constraints aiming to achieve minimum total cost of machining. We developed a customizable software application in Microsoft Visual Studio with C# source code, flexible and extensible that implements the optimization methods. The experiments are based on real data gathered from S.C. “Compa” S.A Sibiu, a company that manufactures automotive components and targets improving of product quality and reducing cost and production time. The obtained results show that, although the …

Main Fuel Cells mathematical models: Comparison and analysis in terms of free parameters

2010

This paper resumes the main mathematical models of Fuel Cells (PEM models). In particular, a comparison study of the various models introduced in the technical literature is presented and the dependency of the various model parameters is analyzed in different operating conditions. As the manifold of the model parameter is very wide and their determination is difficult, it is mandatory to introduce approximations and simplifications on which each model is based. The novelty of this work is the organization of the existing models in three categories with regard to the number of free parameters and to the dependency of such parameters on the different running conditions and the usage of a refe…

An interactive multi-objective approach to heat exchanger network synthesis

2010

In this work we present a multi-objective approach to heat exchanger network synthesis. The approach solves a modified version of the Synheat model using an interactive multi-objective optimisation method, NIMBUS, which is implemented in GAMS. The results obtained demonstrate the potential of interactive multi-objective optimisation.

Load match optimisation of a residential building case study: A cross-entropy based electricity storage sizing algorithm

2015

Abstract The EU EPBD recast regulation marked the application of the net zero energy building (Net ZEB) concept in all fields of building construction in Europe as a building able to generate as much energy as it consumes over a selected time frame. A more detailed insight is however needed, as even if a building achieves a long-term energy balance between energy generated and consumed, smaller time scales must also be considered. For example, from the utility’s point of view, if a Net ZEB is a heavy consumer in the winter, it will appear to be quite similar to a conventional building, requiring the use of additional generation. The increase in the generation-load match means reducing the s…

A NEW REPRESENTATION OF ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS OPERATION USING FOURIER THEORY IN OPTIMAL SMART GRIDS MANAGEMENT

2012

This paper investigates the possibility to use a new modeling of Energy Storage Systems based on zero integral functions. Such functions represent the course of the energy level stored in batteries during the solution of optimal management problems in smart-grids. Storage devices, such as all the other components that are required to meet an integral capacity constraint along the dispatch time, must show the same State of Charge at the start and at the end of the timeframe considered for operation. In this paper, a set of sinusoidal functions have been used for the synthesis of the charge and discharge course of energy Storage Systems. Such representation allows to eliminate the difficult c…
