Device-independent quantum reading and noise-assisted quantum transmitters

2014

In quantum reading, a quantum state of light (transmitter) is applied to read classical information. In the presence of noise or for sufficiently weak signals, quantum reading can outperform classical reading by enhanced state distinguishability. Here we show that the enhanced quantum efficiency depends on the presence in the transmitter of a particular type of quantum correlations, the discord of response. Different encodings and transmitters give rise to different levels of efficiency. Considering noisy quantum probes we show that squeezed thermal transmitters with non-symmetrically distributed noise among the field modes yield a higher quantum efficiency compared to coherent thermal quan…

Information geometry of Gaussian channels

2009

We define a local Riemannian metric tensor in the manifold of Gaussian channels and the distance that it induces. We adopt an information-geometric approach and define a metric derived from the Bures-Fisher metric for quantum states. The resulting metric inherits several desirable properties from the Bures-Fisher metric and is operationally motivated from distinguishability considerations: It serves as an upper bound to the attainable quantum Fisher information for the channel parameters using Gaussian states, under generic constraints on the physically available resources. Our approach naturally includes the use of entangled Gaussian probe states. We prove that the metric enjoys some desir…

Non-isospectral Hamiltonians, intertwining operators and hidden hermiticity

2011

We have recently proposed a strategy to produce, starting from a given hamiltonian $h_1$ and a certain operator $x$ for which $[h_1,xx^\dagger]=0$ and $x^\dagger x$ is invertible, a second hamiltonian $h_2$ with the same eigenvalues as $h_1$ and whose eigenvectors are related to those of $h_1$ by $x^\dagger$. Here we extend this procedure to build up a second hamiltonian, whose eigenvalues are different from those of $h_1$, and whose eigenvectors are still related as before. This new procedure is also extended to crypto-hermitian hamiltonians.

Classes of Exactly Solvable Generalized Semi-Classical Rabi Systems

2018

The exact quantum dynamics of a single spin-1/2 in a generic time-dependent classical magnetic field is investigated and compared with the quantum motion of a spin-1/2 studied by Rabi and Schwinger. The possibility of regarding the scenario studied in this paper as a generalization of that considered by Rabi and Schwinger is discussed and a notion of time-dependent resonance condition is introduced and carefully legitimated and analysed. Several examples help to disclose analogies and departures of the quantum motion induced in a generalized Rabi system with respect to that exhibited by the spin-1/2 in a magnetic field precessing around the $z$-axis. We find that, under generalized resonanc…

Time evolution of a pair of distinguishable interacting spins subjected to controllable and noisy magnetic fields

2017

The quantum dynamics of a $\hat{\mathbf{J}}^2=(\hat{\mathbf{j}}_1+\hat{\mathbf{j}}_2)^2$-conserving Hamiltonian model describing two coupled spins $\hat{\mathbf{j}}_1$ and $\hat{\mathbf{j}}_2$ under controllable and fluctuating time-dependent magnetic fields is investigated. Each eigenspace of $\hat{\mathbf{J}}^2$ is dynamically invariant and the Hamiltonian of the total system restricted to any one of such $(j_1+j_2)-|j_1-j_2|+1$ eigenspaces, possesses the SU(2) structure of the Hamiltonian of a single fictitious spin acted upon by the total magnetic field. We show that such a reducibility holds regardless of the time dependence of the externally applied field as well as of the statistical…

Nonlocally-induced (fractional) bound states: Shape analysis in the infinite Cauchy well

2015

Fractional (L\'{e}vy-type) operators are known to be spatially nonlocal. This becomes an issue if confronted with a priori imposed exterior Dirichlet boundary data. We address spectral properties of the prototype example of the Cauchy operator $(-\Delta )^{1/2}$ in the interval $D=(-1,1) \subset R$, with a focus on functional shapes of lowest eigenfunctions and their fall-off at the boundaries of $D$. New high accuracy formulas are deduced for approximate eigenfunctions. We analyze how their shape reproduction fidelity is correlated with the evaluation finesse of the corresponding eigenvalues.

Analytic estimation of transition between instantaneous eigenstates of quantum two-level system

2018

AbstractTransition amplitudes between instantaneous eigenstates of a quantum two-level system are evaluated analytically on the basis of a new parametrization of its evolution operator, which has recently been proposed to construct exact solutions. In particular, the condition under which the transitions are suppressed is examined analytically. It is shown that the analytic expression of the transition amplitude enables us, not only to confirm the adiabatic theorem, but also to derive the necessary and sufficient condition for quantum two-level system to remain in one of the instantaneous eigenstates.

Ultrarelativistic (Cauchy) spectral problem in the infinite well

2016

We analyze spectral properties of the ultrarelativistic (Cauchy) operator $|\Delta |^{1/2}$, provided its action is constrained exclusively to the interior of the interval $[-1,1] \subset R$. To this end both analytic and numerical methods are employed. New high-accuracy spectral data are obtained. A direct analytic proof is given that trigonometric functions $\cos(n\pi x/2)$ and $\sin(n\pi x)$, for integer $n$ are {\it not} the eigenfunctions of $|\Delta |_D^{1/2}$, $D=(-1,1)$. This clearly demonstrates that the traditional Fourier multiplier representation of $|\Delta |^{1/2}$ becomes defective, while passing from $R$ to a bounded spatial domain $D\subset R$.

Non-locality and causal evolution in QFT

2006

Non locality appearing in QFT during the free evolution of localized field states and in the Feynman propagator function is analyzed. It is shown to be connected to the initial non local properties present at the level of quantum states and then it does not imply a violation of Einstein's causality. Then it is investigated a simple QFT system with interaction, consisting of a classical source coupled linearly to a quantum scalar field, that is exactly solved. The expression for the time evolution of the state describing the system is given. The expectation value of any arbitrary ``good'' local observable, expressed as a function of the field operator and its space and time derivatives, is o…

Simple non-Markovian microscopic models for the depolarizing channel of a single qubit

2012

The archetypal one-qubit noisy channels ---depolarizing, phase-damping and amplitude-damping channels--- describe both Markovian and non-Markovian evolution. Simple microscopic models for the depolarizing channel, both classical and quantum, are considered. Microscopic models which describe phase damping and amplitude damping channels are briefly reviewed.
