Long-Time Preservation of Nonlocal Entanglement

We investigate how nonlocal entanglement, as identified by violations of a Bell inequality, may be preserved during the evolution. Our system consists of two qubits each embedded in a zero-temperature bosonic reservoir evolving independently and initially in an entangled mixed state. We show that the violation of the Bell inequality can be related to the single-qubit population of excited state in such a way that, by appropriately choosing structured environments that give rise to sufficiently high values of population trapping, long-time preservation of nonlocal entanglement can be correspondingly achieved.

Stopping a slow-light soliton: an exact solution

We investigate propagation of a slow-light soliton in Λ-type media such as atomic vapours and Bose–Einstein condensates. We show that the group velocity of the soliton monotonically decreases with the intensity of the controlling laser field, which decays exponentially after the laser is switched off. The shock wave of the vanishing controlling field overtakes the slow soliton and stops it, while the optical information is recorded in the medium in the form of spatially localized polarization. In the strongly nonlinear regime we find an explicit exact solution describing the whole process.

Apparent remote synchronization of amplitudes: A demodulation and interference effect

A form of "remote synchronization" was recently described, wherein amplitude fluctuations across a ring of non-identical, non-linear electronic oscillators become entrained into spatially-structured patterns. According to linear models and mutual information, synchronization and causality dip at a certain distance, then recover before eventually fading. Here, the underlying mechanism is finally elucidated through novel experiments and simulations. Anomaly and global inconsistency matching: θ angles, SU(3)/U(1)2 nonlinear sigma model, SU(3) chains, and generalizations

We discuss the SU(3)/[U(1)×U(1)] nonlinear sigma model in 1+1D and, more broadly, its linearized counterparts. Such theories can be expressed as U(1)×U(1) gauge theories and therefore allow for two topological θ angles. These models provide a field theoretic description of the SU(3) chains. We show that, for particular values of θ angles, a global symmetry group of such systems has a 't Hooft anomaly, which manifests itself as an inability to gauge the global symmetry group. By applying anomaly matching, the ground-state properties can be severely constrained. Role of a triangle singularity in the πN(1535) contribution to γp→pπ0η

We have studied the $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}\ensuremath{\eta}$ reaction paying attention to the two main mechanisms at low energies, the $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(1700)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\eta}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(1232)$ and the $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(1700)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}N(1535)$. Both are driven by the photoexcitation of the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(1700)$ and the second one involves a mechanism that leads to a triangle singularity. Scaling Regimes and the Singularity of Specific Heat in the 3D Ising Model

AbstractThe singularity of specific heat CV of the three-dimensional Ising model is studied based on Monte Carlo data for lattice sizes L≤1536. Fits of two data sets, one corresponding to certain value of the Binder cumulant and the other — to the maximum of CV, provide consistent values of C0 in the ansatz CV(L)=C0+ALα/ν at large L, if α/ν=0.196(6). However, a direct estimation from our data suggests that α/ν, most probably, has a smaller value (e.g., α/ν= 0.113(30)). Thus, the conventional power-law scaling ansatz can be questioned because of this inconsistency. We have found that the data are well described by certain logarithmic ansatz.

Readout of the UFFO Slewing Mirror Telescope to detect UV/optical photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts

The Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) was proposed for rapid response to prompt UV/optical photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). The SMT is a key component of the Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO)-pathfinder, which will be launched aboard the Lomonosov spacecraft at the end of 2013. The SMT utilizes a motorized mirror that slews rapidly forward to its target within a second after triggering by an X-ray coded mask camera, which makes unnecessary a reorientation of the entire spacecraft. Subsequent measurement of the UV/optical is accomplished by a 10 cm aperture Ritchey-Chretien telescope and the focal plane detector of Intensified Charge-Coupled Device (ICCD). R-summed form of adiabatic expansions in curved spacetime

The Feynman propagator in curved spacetime admits an asymptotic (Schwinger-DeWitt) series expansion in derivatives of the metric. Remarkably, all terms in the series containing the Ricci scalar R can be summed exactly. We show that this (non-perturbative) property of the Schwinger-DeWitt series has a natural and equivalent counterpart in the adiabatic (Parker-Fulling) series expansion of the scalar modes in an homogeneous cosmological spacetime. The equivalence between both R-summed adiabatic expansions can be further extended when a background scalar field is also present.

The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is a next-generation, large-scale tritium β-decay experiment to determine the neutrino mass by investigating the kinematics of tritium β-decay with a sensitivity of 200 meV/c2 using the MAC-E filter technique. In order to reach this sensitivity a low background level of 10−2 counts per second (cps) is required. A major background concern in MAC-E filters is the presence of Penning traps.
