The geometry of the secant caustic of a planar curve
2018
The secant caustic of a planar curve $M$ is the image of the singular set of the secant map of $M$. We analyse the geometrical properties of the secant caustic of a planar curve, i.e. the number of branches of the secant caustic, the parity of the number of cusps and the number of inflexion points in each branch of this set. In particular, we investigate in detail some of the geometrical properties of the secant caustic of a rosette, i.e. a smooth regular oriented closed curve with non-vanishing curvature.
Algebraic models of the Euclidean plane
2018
We introduce a new invariant, the real (logarithmic)-Kodaira dimension, that allows to distinguish smooth real algebraic surfaces up to birational diffeomorphism. As an application, we construct infinite families of smooth rational real algebraic surfaces with trivial homology groups, whose real loci are diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^2$, but which are pairwise not birationally diffeomorphic. There are thus infinitely many non-trivial models of the euclidean plane, contrary to the compact case.
Extremal properties of the determinant of the Laplacian in the Bergman metric on the moduli space of genus two Riemann surfaces
2005
We study extremal properties of the determinant of the Laplacian in the Bergman metric on the moduli space of compact genus two Riemann surfaces. By a combination of analytical and numerical methods we identify four non-degenerate critical points of this function and compute the signature of the Hessian at these points. The curve with the maximal number of automorphisms (the Burnside curve) turns out to be the point of the absolute maximum. Our results agree with the mass formula for orbifold Euler characteristics of the moduli space. A similar analysis is performed for the Bolza's strata of symmetric Riemann surfaces of genus two.
On globally generated vector bundles on projective spaces
2009
AbstractA classification is given for globally generated vector bundles E of rank k on Pn having first Chern class c1(E)=2. In particular, we get that they split if k<n unless E is a twisted null-correlation bundle on P3. In view of the well-known correspondence between globally generated vector bundles and maps to Grassmannians, we obtain, as a corollary, a classification of double Veronese embeddings of Pn into a Grassmannian G(k−1,N) of (k−1)-planes in PN.
Machine Morphisms And Simulation
2012
This paper examines the concept of simulation from a modelling viewpoint. How can one Mealy machine simulate the other one? We create formalism for simulation of Mealy machines. The injective s–morphism of the machine semigroups induces the simulation of machines [1]. We present the example of s–morphism such that it is not a homomorphism of semigroups. The story for the surjective s–morphisms is quite different. These are homomorphisms of semigroups but there exists the surjective s–morphism such that it does not induce the simulation.
Some Remarks on Calabi-Yau Manifolds
2010
Here we focus on the geometry of the “mirror quintic” Y and its generalizations. In particular, we illustrate how to obtain new birational models of Y . The article under review can be regarded as an announcement of or supplement to results in forthcoming papers of the author and his collaborators concerning quintic threefolds, the Dwork pencil, and its natural generalization to higher dimensions [G. Bini, “Quotients of hypersurfaces in weighted projective space”, preprint, arxiv.org/ abs/0905.2099, Adv. Geom., to appear; G. Bini, B. van Geemen and T. L. Coprime actions and correspondences of Brauer characters
2017
We prove several results giving substantial evidence in support of the conjectural existence of a Glauberman–Isaacs bijection for Brauer characters under a coprime action. We also discuss related bijections for the McKay conjecture.
Hilbert modularity of some double octic Calabi--Yau threefolds
2018
We exhibit three double octic Calabi--Yau threefolds over the certain quadratic fields and prove their modularity. The non-rigid threefold has two conjugate Hilbert modular forms of weight [4,2] and [2,4] attached while the two rigid threefolds correspond to a Hilbert modular form of weight [4,4] and to the twist of the restriction of a classical modular form of weight 4.
On base loci of higher fundamental forms of toric varieties
2019
We study the base locus of the higher fundamental forms of a projective toric variety $X$ at a general point. More precisely we consider the closure $X$ of the image of a map $({\mathbb C}^*)^k\to {\mathbb P}^n$, sending $t$ to the vector of Laurent monomials with exponents $p_0,\dots,p_n\in {\mathbb Z}^k$. We prove that the $m$-th fundamental form of such an $X$ at a general point has non empty base locus if and only if the points $p_i$ lie on a suitable degree-$m$ affine hypersurface. We then restrict to the case in which the points $p_i$ are all the lattice points of a lattice polytope and we give some applications of the above result. In particular we provide a classification for the se…
On Fibrations Between Internal Groupoids and Their Normalizations
2018
We characterize fibrations and $$*$$ -fibrations in the 2-category of internal groupoids in terms of the comparison functor from certain pullbacks to the corresponding strong homotopy pullbacks. As an application, we deduce the internal version of the Brown exact sequence for $$*$$ -fibrations from the internal version of the Gabriel–Zisman exact sequence. We also analyse fibrations and $$*$$ -fibrations in the category of arrows and study when the normalization functor preserves and reflects them. This analysis allows us to give a characterization of protomodular categories using strong homotopy kernels and a generalization of the Snake Lemma.
