Nuclear matrix elements and the neutrinoless double beta decay

2005

Systematics of the nuclear matrix elements related to the neutrinoless double beta ( 0 ν β β ) decay are discussed. The calculation of the related nuclear matrix elements in the framework of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) is analyzed. In particular, the extraction of a proper value of the proton-neutron particle-particle interaction parameter in this theory is addressed. The relevance of different multipoles in the multipole decomposition of the 0 ν β β matrix element is also discussed.

The pionic beta decay in chiral perturbation theory

2003

Within the framework of chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons and leptons, we present an updated analysis of the pionic beta decay including all electromagnetic contributions of order e**2 p**2. We discuss the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vud| from experimental data. The method employed here is consistent with the analogous treatment of the Kl3 decays and the determination of |Vus|.

Fascinating puzzle called double beta decay

2019

The question of whether neutrinos are Majorana or Dirac particles and what are their average masses remains one of the most fundamental problems in physics today. Observation of neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) would verify the Majorana nature of the neutrino and constrain the absolute scale of the neutrino mass spectrum. The inverse half-life for 0νββ-decay is given by the product of a phase space factor (PSF), a nuclear matrix element (NME), which both rely on theoretical description, and a function f containing the physics beyond the standard model. Recent calculations of PSF and NME will be reviewed together with comparison to other available results. These calculations serve the p…

Measurement of Dipole Matrix Elements with a Single Trapped Ion.

2015

We demonstrate a new method for the direct measurement of atomic dipole transition matrix elements based on techniques developed for quantum information purposes. The scheme consists of measuring dispersive and absorptive off-resonant light-ion interactions and is applicable to many atomic species. We determine the dipole matrix element pertaining to the Ca II H line, i.e. the 4$^2$S$_{1/2} \leftrightarrow $ 4$^2$P$_{1/2}$ transition of $^{40}$Ca$^+$, for which we find the value 2.8928(43) ea$_0$. Moreover, the method allows us to deduce the lifetime of the 4$^2$P$_{1/2}$ state to be 6.904(26) ns, which is in agreement with predictions from recent theoretical calculations and resolves a lon…

Solution of the Lindblad equation in Kraus representation

2006

The so-called Lindblad equation, a typical master equation describing the dissipative quantum dynamics, is shown to be solvable for finite-level systems in a compact form without resort to writing it down as a set of equations among matrix elements. The solution is then naturally given in an operator form, known as the Kraus representation. Following a few simple examples, the general applicability of the method is clarified.

Restoring the valence-shell stabilization in Nd 140

2020

A projectile Coulomb-excitation experiment was performed at the radioactive-ion beam facility HIE-ISOLDE at CERN to obtain E2 and M1 transition matrix elements of Nd-140 using the multistep Coulomb-excitation code GOSIA. The absolute M1 strengths, B(M1; 2(2)(-) -> 2(1)(+)) = 0.033(8)mu(2)(N), B(M1 ; 2(3)(+) -> 2(1)(+)) = 0.26(-0.10)(+0.11)mu(2)(N), and B(M1; 2(4)+ -> 2(1)(+)) <0.04 mu(2)(N) identify the 2(3)(+) state as the main fragment of the one-quadrupole-phonon proton-neutron mixed-symmetry state of Nd-140. The degree of F-spin mixing in Nd-140 was quantified with the determination of the mixing matrix element VF-mix <7(-7)(-13) keV. Peer reviewed

Measurements of the semileptonic decaysB¯→Dℓν¯andB¯→D*ℓν¯using a global fit toDXℓν¯final states

2009

Semileptonic (B) over bar decays to DXl (nu) over bar (l = e or mu) are selected by reconstructing D(0)l and D(+)l combinations from a sample of 230 x 10(6) Y(4S) --> B (B) over bar decays recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) collider at SLAC. A global fit to these samples in a three-dimensional space of kinematic variables is used to determine the branching fractions B(B- --> D(0)l (nu) over bar = (2.34 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.13)% and B(B- --> D*(0)l (nu) over bar) = (5.40 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.21)% where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The fit also determines form-factor parameters in a parametrization based on heavy quark effective theory, resulting in rho(2)…

The M4 transitions of isomeric states

2015

Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tutkitaan isomeeristen tilojen magneettisten M4-gammasiirtymien redusoituja matriisielementtejä. Tutkittavat siirtymät ovat venyneitä M4-siirtymiä kaksoisbeetahajoamisten massa-alueilla A=85-115 ja A=135-143. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on verrata kokeellisia ydinmatriisielementtejä kvasihiukkasmatriisielementteihin ja MQPM-teorian avulla laskettuihin matriisielementteihin. Kokeelliset matriisielementi lasketaan kokeellisesti määritettyjen arvojen avulla ja kvasihiukkas- sekä MQPM-matriisielementit määritetään tietokoneohjelmien avulla. Kokeellisten ja kvasihiukkasmatriisielementtien välinen suhde osoittautui olevan noin 0,29 ja kokeellisten ja MQPM-matriisielemen…

B0−B¯0Mixing beyond Factorization in QCD Sum Rules

2003

We present a calculation of the B°-B° mixing matrix element in the framework of QCD sum rules for three-point functions. We compute α s corrections to a three-point function at the three-loop level in QCD perturbation theory, which allows one to extract the matrix element with next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy. This calculation is imperative for a consistent evaluation of experimentally measured mixing parameters since the coefficient functions of the effective Hamiltonian for B 0 -B 0 mixing are known at NLO. We find that radiative corrections violate factorization at NLO; this violation is under full control and amounts to 10%. The resulting value of the B parameter is found to be B B …
