Adhesion between epithelial cells and extracellular substrates is normally mediated through basal adhesion complexes. However, some cells also possess comparable junctions on their apical surface. Here, we describe two new Drosophila proteins, Piopio and Papillote, that are required for the link between the apical epithelial surface and the overlying apical extracellular matrix (aECM). The two proteins share a zona pellucida (ZP) domain with mammalian aECM components, including the tectorins found in the vertebrate inner ear. The Mixed Akali Effect in Ternary Alkali Silicate Melts: Insight from Molecular Dynamics Computer simulations

Large scale molecular dynamics (MD) computer simulations are used to study the amorphous alkali silicates (Li2O)(2·SiO2) [LS2], (K2O)(2·SiO2) [KS2], and (0.5·Li2O)(0.5·K2O)(2·SiO2) [LKS2]. These systems are characterized by a fast alkali ion motion in a relatively immobile Si-0 matrix. We investigate the so-called mixed alkali effect (MAE) which is reflected as a significant decrease of the alkali ion diffusion constants in LKS2 as compared to the corresponding binary systems LS2 and KS2. We show that the subtle interplay between the structure on intermediate length scales and the alkali diffusion is important to understand the microscopic origin of the MAE.

Abstract The FCNS ⇆ FC(NS) photoisomerization process is a simple model system for molecular switches. Here, we examined the switching processes by experimental and theoretical methods. Prior matrix-isolation IR spectroscopic studies were complemented by matrix-isolation UV spectroscopic measurements to assist the interpretation of the mechanism of the ring closure and opening processes and to verify the accuracy of the computations on the vertical excitation energies. We studied a multi-atom model of microlaser. As initial conditions we took diagonal density matrix of atoms in the basis of symmetrized collective states. Under diagnonal invariance taking a place for such initial conditions, we considered peculiarities of dynamics of the field reduced density matrix comparing it with the one-atom case. The field possesses subpoissonian distributions in a quasistationare, which are stable with respect to relaxation and number of atoms fluctuations in a packet. A statistical approach towards a regionalization of daily rainfall in Sri Lanka

Regionalization of daily rainfall in Sri Lanka was examined using orthogonal factor analysis (OFA) based on daily rainfall data of 42 stations for a 15-year period (1971–1985). The number of potential rainy days was computed from the original data matrix and subjected to S-mode OFA. The first 10 orthogonal factors were shown as highly significant, explaining 65.1 per cent of the total variance of the whole data matrix, where the level of eigenvalues represented was > 1.0. Experimental Study of Six Different Implementations of Parallel Matrix Multiplication on Heterogeneous Computational Clusters of Multicore Processors

Two strategies of distribution of computations can be used to implement parallel solvers for dense linear algebra problems for Heterogeneous Computational Clusters of Multicore Processors (HCoMs). These strategies are called Heterogeneous Process Distribution Strategy (HPS) and Heterogeneous Data Distribution Strategy (HDS). They are not novel and have been researched thoroughly. However, the advent of multicores necessitates enhancements to them. In this paper, we present these enhancements. Our study is based on experiments using six applications to perform Parallel Matrix-matrix Multiplication (PMM) on an HCoM employing the two distribution strategies.
Multi-label classification using boolean matrix decomposition

This paper introduces a new multi-label classifier based on Boolean matrix decomposition. Boolean matrix decomposition is used to extract, from the full label matrix, latent labels representing useful Boolean combinations of the original labels. Base level models predict latent labels, which are subsequently transformed into the actual labels by Boolean matrix multiplication with the second matrix from the decomposition. The new method is tested on six publicly available datasets with varying numbers of labels. The experimental evaluation shows that the new method works particularly well on datasets with a large number of labels and strong dependencies among them.
