Host-range expansion of Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus to Agrotis segetum larvae when the midgut is bypassed.
2010
Given the high similarity in genome content and organization between Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) and Agrotis segetum nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgseNPV), as well as the high percentages of similarity found between their 30 core genes, the specificity of these NPVs was analysed for the respective insect hosts, S. exigua and A. segetum. The LD(50) for AgseNPV in second-instar A. segetum larvae was 83 occlusion bodies per larva and the LT(50) was 8.1 days. AgseNPV was orally infectious for S. exigua, but the LD(50) was 10 000-fold higher than for SeMNPV. SeMNPV was not infectious for A. segetum larvae when administered orally, but an infection was established by injecti…
Sex in an uncertain world: environmental stochasticity helps restore competitive balance between sexually and asexually reproducing populations
2014
Like many organisms, individuals of the freshwater ostracod species Eucypris virens exhibit either obligate sexual or asexual reproductive modes. Both types of individual routinely co-occur, including in the same temporary freshwater pond (their natural habitat in which they undergo seasonal diapause). Given the well-known two-fold cost of sex, this begs the question of how sexually reproducing individuals are able to coexist with their asexual counterparts in spite of such overwhelming costs. Environmental stochasticity in the form of 'false dawn' inundations (where the first hydration is ephemeral and causes loss of early hatching individuals) may provide an advantage to the sexual subpop…
Weak decay ofΛc+for the study ofΛ(1405)andΛ(1670)
2015
We study the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{c}$ decay process to ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ and the meson-baryon final state for the analysis of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ resonances. Considering the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, color suppression, diquark correlation, and the kinematical condition, we show that the final meson-baryon state should be in a pure $I=0$ combination, when the meson-baryon invariant mass is small. Because the $I=1$ contamination usually makes it difficult to analyze $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ resonances directly from experiments, the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{c}$ decay is an ideal process to study $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ resonances.…
A review on basalt fibre and its composites
2015
Abstract In recent years, both industrial and academic world are focussing their attention toward the development of sustainable composites, reinforced with natural fibres. In particular, among the natural fibres (i.e. animal, vegetable or mineral) that can be used as reinforcement, the basalt ones represent the most interesting for their properties. The aim of this review is to illustrate the results of research on this topical subject. In the introduction, mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of basalt fibre have been reviewed. Moreover, its main manufacturing technologies have been described. Then, the effect of using this mineral fibre as reinforcement of different matrices as po…
Identification of Lactobacilli from Deep Carious Lesions by Means of Species-Specific PCR and MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry
2014
SUMMARY Background: The aim of the present study was to compare MALDI-TOF results for the identification of 87 lactobacilli, isolated from soft or hard carious dentin from 70 first molars of 7- to 8-year-old children with those obtained by species-specific PCR. Methods: The 87 isolates were analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS (Microflex LT, MALDI Biotyper 3.0, Bruker Daltonik, Bremen, Germany), using a reference data base of 4110 strains including > 90 lactobacillus species. For the identification with species-specific PCR, oligonucleotide primers (16S rRNA) specific for L. casei, L. paracasei, L. rhamnosus, L. gasseri, L. plantarum, and L. acidophilus were used; type strains served as controls. The P…
Elastin Cables Define the Axial Connective Tissue System in the Murine Lung
2015
The axial connective tissue system is a fiber continuum of the lung that maintains alveolar surface area during changes in lung volume. Although the molecular anatomy of the axial system remains undefined, the fiber continuum of the lung is central to contemporary models of lung micromechanics and alveolar regeneration. To provide a detailed molecular structure of the axial connective tissue system, we examined the extracellular matrix of murine lungs. The lungs were decellularized using a 24 hr detergent treatment protocol. Systematic evaluation of the decellularized lungs demonstrated no residual cellular debris; morphometry demonstrated a mean 39 ± 7% reduction in lung dimensions. Scanni…
Dynamic Gaussian Graphical Models for Modelling Genomic Networks
2014
After sequencing the entire DNA for various organisms, the challenge has become understanding the functional interrelatedness of the genome. Only by understanding the pathways for various complex diseases can we begin to make sense of any type of treatment. Unfortunately, decyphering the genomic network structure is an enormous task. Even with a small number of genes the number of possible networks is very large. This problem becomes even more difficult, when we consider dynamical networks. We consider the problem of estimating a sparse dynamic Gaussian graphical model with \(L_1\) penalized maximum likelihood of structured precision matrix. The structure can consist of specific time dynami…
Low-complexity AoA and AoD Estimation in the Transformed Spatial Domain for Millimeter Wave MIMO Channels
2021
High-accuracy angle of arrival (AoA) and angle of departure (AoD) estimation is critical for cell search, stable communications and positioning in millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular systems. Moreover, the design of low-complexity AoA/AoD estimation algorithms is also of major importance in the deployment of practical systems to enable a fast and resource-efficient computation of beamforming weights. Parametric mmWave channel estimation allows to describe the channel matrix as a combination of direction-dependent signal paths, exploiting the sparse characteristics of mmWave channels. In this context, a fast Transformed Spatial Domain Channel Estimation (TSDCE) algorithm was recently proposed …

PINCoC: a Co-Clustering based Method to Analyze Protein-Protein Interaction Networks
2007
Anovel technique to search for functionalmodules in a protein-protein interaction network is presented. The network is represented by the adjacency matrix associated with the undirected graph modelling it. The algorithm introduces the concept of quality of a sub-matrix of the adjacency matrix, and applies a greedy search technique for finding local optimal solutions made of dense submatrices containing the maximum number of ones. An initial random solution, constituted by a single protein, is evolved to search for a locally optimal solution by adding/removing connected proteins that best contribute to improve the quality function. Experimental evaluations carried out on Saccaromyces Cerevis…
