Associative rings with metabelian adjoint group

Abstract The set of all elements of an associative ring R, not necessarily with a unit element, forms a monoid under the circle operation r∘s=r+s+rs on R whose group of all invertible elements is called the adjoint group of R and denoted by R°. The ring R is radical if R=R°. It is proved that a radical ring R is Lie metabelian if and only if its adjoint group R° is metabelian. This yields a positive answer to a question raised by S. Jennings and repeated later by A. Krasil'nikov. AbstractLet f∈W1,1(Ω,Rn) be a homeomorphism of finite distortion K. It is known that if K1/(n−1)∈L1(Ω), then the Jacobian Jf of f is positive almost everywhere in Ω. We will show that this integrability assumption on K is sharp in any Orlicz-scale: if α is increasing function (satisfying minor technical assumptions) such that limt→∞α(t)=∞, then there exists f such that K1/(n−1)/α(K)∈L1(Ω) and Jf vanishes in a set of positive measure.

Stochastic factorizations, sandwiched simplices and the topology of the space of explanations

We study the space of stochastic factorizations of a stochastic matrix V, motivated by the statistical problem of hidden random variables. We show that this space is homeomorphic to the space of simplices sandwiched between two nested convex polyhedra, and use this geometrical model to gain some insight into its structure and topology. We prove theorems describing its homotopy type, and, in the case where the rank of V is 2, we give a complete description, including bounds on the number of connected components, and examples in which these bounds are attained. We attempt to make the notions of topology accessible and relevant to statisticians.

Varieties of superalgebras of almost polynomial growth

Abstract Let V gr be a variety of superalgebras and let c n gr ( V gr ) , n = 1 , 2 , …  , be its sequence of graded codimensions. Such a sequence is polynomially bounded if and only if V gr does not contain a list of five superalgebras consisting of a commutative superalgebra, the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra and the algebra of 2 × 2 upper triangular matrices with trivial and natural Z 2 -gradings. In this paper we completely classify all subvarieties of the varieties generated by these five superalgebras, by giving a complete list of finite dimensional generating superalgebras.

Estimates of Jacobians by subdeterminants

Let ƒ: Ω → ℝn be a mapping in the Sobolev space W1,n−1(Ω,ℝn), n ≥ 2. We assume that the determinant of the differential matrix Dƒ (x) is nonnegative, while the cofactor matrix D#ƒ satisfies\(|D^\sharp f|^{\frac{n}{{n - 1}}} \in L^P (\Omega )\), where Lp(Ω) is an Orlicz space. We show that, under the natural Divergence Condition on P, see (1.10), the Jacobian lies in Lloc1 (Ω). Estimates above and below Lloc1 (Ω) are also studied. These results are stronger than the previously known estimates, having assumed integrability conditions on the differential matrix.

Minimum node weight spanning trees searching algorithm for broadcast transmission in sensor networks

A minimum node weight spanning tree in a weighted, directed graph is a tree whose node with maximum out-weight is minimal among all spanning trees. This type of trees are important because they appear in the solutions of the maximum lifetime broadcasting problem in wireless sensor networks. In a complete graph build of N nodes there are NN-2 spanning trees and to find such trees it is necessary to perform more than O(NN-2) operations. A regular variational boundary model for free vibrations of magneto-electro-elastic structures

In this paper a regular variational boundary element formulation for dynamic analysis of two-dimensional magneto-electro-elastic domains is presented. The method is based on a hybrid variational principle expressed in terms of generalized magneto-electro-elastic variables. The domain variables are approximated by using a superposition of weighted regular fundamental solutions of the static magneto-electro-elastic problem, whereas the boundary variables are expressed in terms of nodal values. A new solver for incompressible non-isothermal flows in natural and mixed convection over unstructured grids

Abstract In the present paper we propose a new numerical methodology for the solution of 2D non-isothermal incompressible flows for natural and mixed convection in irregular geometries. The governing equations are the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations and the Energy Conservation Equation. Fluid velocity and temperature are coupled in the buoyancy term of the momentum equations according to the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation. The governing equations are discretized over unstructured triangular meshes satisfying the Delaunay property.
