SCIROCCO tool to support knowledge transfer in integrated care

2019

Background: Knowledge transfer has been well recognised as an effective enabler to access existing evidence and learning on integrated care. It requires dedicated support to ensure that the flow of appropriate information and knowledge between adopting and transferring entities is tailored appropriately to the context and maturity of the adopting system. SCIROCCO is an online participatory tool that helps stakeholders to understand: 1) The context requirements of a particular good practice that is considered for adoption; 2) The level of maturity required for a health and social care system to adopt and scale up integrated care; 3) The actions that more progressive regions have taken to be …

Distribution and biology of the Blackmouth catshark Galeus melastomus in the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea)

2009

The Blackmouth catshark, Galeus melastomus, Rafinesque, 1810 (Carcharhiniformes; Scyliorhinidae), is a common, although at present discarded, by- catch of the bottom trawl fisheries in the Strait of Sicily. Given its ecological interest, data gathered in experimental bottom trawl surveys were analysed in order to describe its distribution and main biological traits. The Blackmouth catshark was sampled almost exclusively on the upper slope (200-800), showing the highest frequency of occurrence (69-100%), biomass (BI; 10-85 kg*km-2) and density (DI; 54-506 N*km-2) indexes in the deeper (501-800m) grounds. Individual size (total length, TL, mm) were between 70-590 and 90-510 in females and mal…

Reproductive features of the deep-water rose shrimp, Parapenaeus longirostris (Crustacea: Penaeidae), in the Strait of Sicily

2010

The deep‑water rose shrimp, Parapenaeus longirostris (Lucas, 1846), is one of the most valuable and heavily exploited demersal species of the Mediterranean bottom trawl fisheries. The basic life traits of this shrimp, in particular its reproductive aspects, are regularly monitored during experimental trawl surveys carried out in the Mediterranean Sea. Gonadic condition and maturity status for estimating the size at onset of sexual maturity are commonly assessed in females, using macroscopic color scales, histologically validated only in a few geographical areas. In this study, histological analyses were performed on rose shrimps collected from a trawl survey carried out in the Strait of Sic…

Comparison of degrees of maturity of rabbit lines selected for different traits

2015

[EN] The aim of this work was to study whether commercial nucleus lines of rabbits selected for different traits, and experimental lines having commercial purposes, have the same degree of maturity when compared at the same slaughter age. The study was carried out with 17897 rabbits from Universitat Politècnica de València. Rabbits came from the maternal lines A (3902 rabbits; 44th generation), V (4238 rabbits; 39th generation) and LP (6115 rabbits; 9th generation), selected for litter size at weaning; the paternal line R (2023 rabbits; 25th generation), selected for growth rate between 28 and 63 days of age; the maternal line OR (586 rabbits; 11th generation) selected for ovulation rate; a…

Empirical links between natural mortality and recovery in marine fishes

2017

Probability of species recovery is thought to be correlated with specific aspects of organismal life history, such as age at maturity and longevity, and how these affect rates of natural mortality ( M ) and maximum per capita population growth ( r max ). Despite strong theoretical underpinnings, these correlates have been based on predicted rather than realized population trajectories following threat mitigation. Here, we examine the level of empirical support for postulated links between a suite of life-history traits (related to maturity, age, size and growth) and recovery in marine fishes. Following threat mitigation (medium time since cessation of overfishing = 20 years), 71% of 55 tem…

Desire and its preternse: Analysis of Intersubjective relations in Frank Capra's It happened one night

2019

The following paper analyzes the plot of the 1934 film It Happened One Night, by Frank Capra, an authentic emblem within the film genre of romantic comedy. In it, the protagonists manage to overcome the obstacles that are offered in their way thanks to the pretense of a relationship, the marital one, which finally will end up becoming effective. Recalling a famous Lacanian sentence, according to which human beings “pretend to pretend”, the plot devised by Capra will be analyzed in order to go over the steps that sequence such pretenses. These give order to a process of maturity in which the characters will become what they represent, evidencing the sexual nature of the desire that had impel…

Inhibition of Melatonin in the Plasma of Third-Generation Male Mice under the Action of ELF Magnetic Fields

1998

The pineal gland has been considered a magnetic receptor organ that regulates circadian rhythms by means of the secretion of melatonin, a potent oncostatic agent that prevents the initiation and promotion of cancer. ELF electromagnetic radiation, similar to that generated by power lines, can alter melatonin plasma levels. To study this effect, 4 OF1 mice generations have been reared subjected to a lifelong 15 μT, 50 Hz magnetic field action. This magnetic field was generated inside a Helmholtz coil system. The concentration of melatonin in the blood has been determined on 40 male mice of the third generation by means of RIA, as they reached sexual maturity (3 months).A radical decrease, more…

Histometric investigations of placental villi in cases of unexpected fetal acidosis.

1994

It is not unusual that, after an apparently uneventful pregnancy and birth, postpartal analysis of fetal blood unexpectedly reveals the presence of peripartal acidosis, a finding that is inexplicable on the basis of routine observation of the placenta. Using computer-assisted histometric procedures, it is possible to make a quantitative assessment with respect to the maturity and differentiation of villi, thus casting light on the functional anatomy of these structures. 89 single-birth pregnancies were grouped in accordance to the pH of blood in the umbilical artery (pre-acidosis, acidosis, non acidotic). In acidotic newborns, there is an absolute reduction in the surface area of the placen…
