On the abnormal structure of finite groups

We study finite groups in which every maximal subgroup is supersoluble or normal. Our results answer some questions arising from papers of Asaad and Rose.

Ensuring High Performance of Consensus-Based Estimation by Lifetime Maximization in WSNs

The estimation of a parameter corrupted by noise is a common tasks in wireless sensor networks, where the deployed nodes cooperate in order to improve their own inaccurate observations. This cooperation usually involves successive data exchanges and local information updates until a global consensus value is reached. The quality of the final estimator depends on the amount of collected observations, hence the number of active nodes. Moreover, the inherent iterative nature of the consensus process involves a certain energy consumption. A qualitative examination of performance and energy yield of photovoltaic modules in southern Norway

Three different, commercially available photovoltaic modules have been monitored outdoors in the town of Grimstad, Norway. The present paper describes the experimental setup that was implemented, in particular details of the low-cost electronic loads. Results compare measured performance with manufacturer's data, and temperature measurements enable a comparison with performance at standard test condition temperature. Overall, the monocrystalline module performed best both regarding maximum efficiency and overall energy production, whereas the module based on triple junction amorphous silicon technology had the worst performance considering these criteria. A procedure to calculate the I–V characteristics of thin-film photovoltaic modules using an explicit rational form

Abstract Accurate models of the electrical behaviour of photovoltaic modules are effective tools for system design. One or two diode equivalent circuits have been widely used even though some mathematical difficulties were found dealing with implicit equations. In this paper, a new model based on a simple rational function, which does not contain any implicit exponential form, is presented. An accurate one-diode model suited to represent the current-voltage characteristics of crystalline and thin-film photovoltaic modules

Abstract In this paper a new one-diode model, conceived in order to be used to represent the current-voltage curves of both crystalline and thin-film photovoltaic modules, is presented. The model parameters are calculated from the information contained in the datasheets issued by manufactures by means of simple iterative procedures that do not require the assumption of simplifying hypotheses. Development of a test station for accurate in situ I-V curve measurements of photovoltaic modules in Southern Norway

The development of an outdoor test station for accurate in situ I-V curve measurements of photovoltaic (PV) modules is described. The modules are installed in an open-rack configuration at the University of Agder in Southern Norway. Seven new and three aged PV modules of different type and make are being tested, including mono-and multicrystalline silicon from differing manufacturing routes, triple-junction amorphous silicon, and CIS. Data acquisition is controlled with a multichannel electronic load system and LabVIEW software, recording high-resolution I-V curves at one-minute intervals. Determination of the crystallinity of TiO2 photocatalysts

Abstract This study reports a new simple method to determine the crystallinity of anatase and rutile TiO2 photocatalysts. The crystallinity degree of various anatase and rutile samples was estimated by XRD analysis from the ratio among the full width at half maximum intensities of the main diffraction peaks of anatase or rutile and the (111) peak of CaF2 as internal standard. The photocatalytic activity of selected powders was tested employing the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous solution as probe reaction. The results showed that the photoactivity of the investigated samples increased with increasing crystallinity and crystallite size.

Study of the structural changes induced by air oxidation in Ti–Si–N hard coatings.

International audience; 3-μm thick Ti–Si–N coatings were deposited on polished X38CrMoV5 substrates by sputtering a composite Ti–Si target in Ar–N2 reactive mixture. Oxidation tests were performed in air at 700 °C during 2 h. Whatever the silicon content in the range 0–4 at.%, no silicon containing compound was detected by XRD before air oxidation and only the TiN phase was evidenced. The mean grain size estimated from the full width at half maximum of the TiN (111) diffraction peak was close to 10 nm. As commonly reported for Ti–Si–N films, the hardness showed a maximum at 51 GPa versus the Si content. After oxidation of the TiN film, XRD and micro-Raman analyses revealed the occurrence of…

Predicting maximum annual values of event soil loss by USLE-type models

Abstract Previous experimental investigations showed that a large proportion of total plot soil erosion over a long time period is generally due to relatively few, large storms. Consequently, erosion models able to accurately predict the highest plot soil loss values have practical importance since they could allow to improve the design of soil conservation practices in an area of interest.
