The prime graph on class sizes of a finite group has a bipartite complement

2020

Abstract Let G be a finite group, and let cs ( G ) denote the set of sizes of the conjugacy classes of G. The prime graph built on cs ( G ) , that we denote by Δ ( G ) , is the (simple undirected) graph whose vertices are the prime divisors of the numbers in cs ( G ) , and two distinct vertices p, q are adjacent if and only if pq divides some number in cs ( G ) . A rephrasing of the main theorem in [8] is that the complement Δ ‾ ( G ) of the graph Δ ( G ) does not contain any cycle of length 3. In this paper we generalize this result, showing that Δ ‾ ( G ) does not contain any cycle of odd length, i.e., it is a bipartite graph. In other words, the vertex set V ( G ) of Δ ( G ) is covered b…

Bounding the number of vertices in the degree graph of a finite group

2020

Abstract Let G be a finite group, and let cd ( G ) denote the set of degrees of the irreducible complex characters of G . The degree graph Δ ( G ) of G is defined as the simple undirected graph whose vertex set V ( G ) consists of the prime divisors of the numbers in cd ( G ) , two distinct vertices p and q being adjacent if and only if pq divides some number in cd ( G ) . In this note, we provide an upper bound on the size of V ( G ) in terms of the clique number ω ( G ) (i.e., the maximum size of a subset of V ( G ) inducing a complete subgraph) of Δ ( G ) . Namely, we show that | V ( G ) | ≤ max { 2 ω ( G ) + 1 , 3 ω ( G ) − 4 } . Examples are given in order to show that the bound is bes…

Flexibility of TTF. a theoretical study

1999

Abstract The folding of tetrathiafulvalene along the S···S axes has been investigated using highly-accurate quantum-chemical calculations. A very flat, two-fold potential is found for neutral TTF where minima correspond to boat conformations (θ ≈ 15–20 °). The flatness of the folding potential indicates that TTF is conformationally more flexible than usually thought.

Fight on plankton! Or, phytoplankton shape and size as adaptive tools to get ahead in the struggle for life

2011

A renewed interest in investigating the relationships existing between body size and environmental variables is pervading ecological studies. Phytoplankton has a long tradition as model system in studies of community ecology and several research concepts were developed using these organisms. In this paper we try to review the relevance of analyzing the morphological features of phytoplankton in ecology. Starting with a brief account of allometric relationships existing in phytoplankton, we i) examine the physical context in which phytoplankton grow, and ii) highlight the role of their size in nutrient uptake, and that of their shape in light harvesting. Moreover, the way in which the morpho…

Hand feeding: a method to increase the survival rate ofOrthetrum coerulescens(Odonata: Libellulidae) in outdoor enclosures

2014

Food intake rate and diet composition have a high impact on all organisms and affect individual fitness, fecundity and mortality. Specimens in enclosures have to be fed in an adequate way and with minimum stress for the specimens. Adult dragonflies are flying hunters. In enclosures, they are usually fed by adding different kinds of adult dipterans. In this study, I additionally fed specimens of Orthetrum coerulescens by hand. Each specimen received one house fly or up to six fruit flies per day. This was less than an adult dragonfly would normally consume; however, this additional hand feeding was enough to significantly increase the survival rate of individuals, especially within the first…

Ten Years of Paleoceanographic Studies at ODP Site 963 (Central Mediterranean Sea)

2014

The geographical location, the shape and the circulation pattern makes the Mediterranean Sea an ideal laboratory to study the interplay between different climatic systems, abrupt climate changes and the response of marine ecosystems. The Ocean Drilling Program Site 963 was drilled in the Northwestern part of the Sicily Channel, the sill that divides the western from the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Numerous papers have been published on Site 963 sediments in the last decade, investigating Mediterranean paleoceanographic themes. Here we offer a synthetic framework of these investigations carried out by sub-centennial resolution. We present the whole sequence of suborbital climatic oscillations…

Testing Ikonos and Landsat 7 ETM+ Potential for Stand-Level Forest Type Mapping by Soft Supervised Approaches

2003

Forest types can be adopted as a suitable reference for classifying survey units within multipurpose forest resources inventories, at the properly considered level. This kind of hierarchical classification approach integrates an ecologically meaningful per-habitat perspective with practical survey, planning and management requirements. Advanced remote sensing technologies can be valuable tools for a cost-effective implementation of such an approach. In the present paper, data from high (Landsat 7 ETM+) and very high (Ikonos) spatial resolution satellite sensors were tested to understand their potential contribution supporting stand-level forest type mapping under Mediterranean conditions. I…

The Intersection of $3$-Maximal Submonids

2020

Very little is known about the structure of the intersection of two $k$-generated monoids of words, even for $k=3$. Here we investigate the case of $k$-maximal monoids, that is, monoids whose basis of cardinality $k$ cannot be non-trivially decomposed into at most $k$ words. We characterize the intersection in the case of two $3$-maximal monoids.

Detection of Signals in MC–CDMA Using a Novel Iterative Block Decision Feedback Equalizer

2022

This paper presents a technique to mitigate multiple access interference (MAI) in multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) wireless communications systems. Although under normal circumstances the MC-CDMA system can achieve high spectral efficiency and resistance towards inter symbol interference (ISI) however when exposed to substantial nonlinear distortion the issue of MAI manifests. Such distortion results when the power amplifiers are driven into saturation or when the transmit signal experiences extreme adverse channel conditions. The proposed technique uses a modified iterative block decision feedback equalizer (IB-DFE) that uses a minimal mean square error (MMSE) receiver …

Model averaging estimation of generalized linear models with imputed covariates

2015

a b s t r a c t We address the problem of estimating generalized linear models when some covariate values are missing but imputations are available to fill-in the missing values. This situation generates a bias-precision trade- off in the estimation of the model parameters. Extending the generalized missing-indicator method proposed by Dardanoni et al. (2011) for linear regression, we handle this trade-off as a problem of model uncertainty using Bayesian averaging of classical maximum likelihood estimators (BAML). We also propose a block model averaging strategy that incorporates information on the missing-data patterns and is computationally simple. An empirical application illustrates our…
