Influence of the rainfall measurement interval on the erosivity determinations in the Mediterranean area

Summary The single-storm erosion index, EI, of the USLE and RUSLE models may vary appreciably with the rainfall measurement interval, Δ t . However, the effect of Δ t on EI has not been investigated in the Mediterranean area. Approximately 700 erosive events and 1.5 years of rainfall energies measured by a rainfall impact measurement device were used to evaluate the effect of the rainfall measurement interval (5 min ⩽ Δ t  ⩽ 60 min) on the erosivity determinations in the Mediterranean semi-arid area of Sicily. Abstract The continental shelf morphology offshore of western Sicily suggests that during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 20 ka cal BP), two of the Egadi Islands, Favignana and Levanzo, were connected to Sicily by a wide emerged plain, while Marettimo was only separated from the other islands by a narrow channel. Abstract Landscape evolution and environmental conditions from Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to Late Holocene times were reconstructed from the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the alluvial morphochronostratigraphy, recorded in Bardenas Reales Natural Park (Ebro Basin, NE Spain). Alluvial architecture includes a LGM-Holocene gravelly unit (≈22–9 ka BP), a Lower Holocene silty–muddy unit (≈9–7 ka BP), and an Upper Holocene sandy unit (≈5–0.1 ka BP). Development of a module of stacks of air-breathing microbial fuel cells to light-up a strip of LEDs

Abstract This work focuses on scaling-up of the microbial fuel cells technology according to the principle of miniaturization and multiplication. Seven stacks of 16 mini-MFCs (electrodic area of 0.866 cm2) were built up leading to a big module of 112 MFCs. The electrical connection among the MFCs in the stacks and among the stacks into the modules was optimized in order to implement this technology. Results show that 1 MFC generates 1.22 mW while the optimization of the electric connection in order to achieve the maximum power results in 6.62 mW compared to the theoretical 182 mW, indicating the existence of large energy losses in the system. Revisiting the Mathematical Difficulties in Patinkin Cartel Model and Joint Profit Maximization

We discuss the mathematical difficulties encountered in Patinkin's classical cartel model. It may be impossible to derive Patinkin's cartel by finding the reciprocal marginal cost functions: it could be impossible for cartel members to compute a solution, unless certain assumptions are made to simplify the problem, such as quasi-linear marginal costs or constant marginal costs. The total cost function is incoherent with respect to the sum of members' total cost. The model cannot handle constant marginal costs but we remind that de Mesnard's (2009, 2011) model of cartel with exogenous market shares allow solving the problem. Positive solutions for parametric singular Dirichlet (p,q)-equations

We consider a nonlinear elliptic Dirichlet problem driven by the (p,q)-Laplacian and a reaction consisting of a parametric singular term plus a Caratheodory perturbation f(z,x) which is (p-1)-linear as x goes to + infinity. First we prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing in an exact way the changes in the set of positive solutions as the parameter lambda>0 moves. Subsequently, we focus on the solution multifunction and prove its continuity properties. Finally we prove the existence of a smallest (minimal) solution u*_lambda and investigate the monotonicity and continuity properties of the map lambda --> u*_lambda.

Abstract Historically, the systematic arrangement of the genera within the family Campulidae, and its relationship with its allied family Nasitrematidae have been rather confused, particularly because only adult morphology has been available to classical taxonomic analysis. In this paper we provide a partial phylogeny of the genera of these families based on mtDNA from five campulid species: Campula oblonga, Zalophotrema atlanticum, Hadwenius tursionis, Oschmarinella rochebruni and ; and one nasitrematid, Nasitremaglobicephalae .
