MCC1019, a selective inhibitor of the Polo-box domain of Polo-like kinase 1 as novel, potent anticancer candidate

Polo-like kinase (PLK1) has been identified as a potential target for cancer treatment. Although a number of small molecules have been investigated as PLK1 inhibitors, many of which showed limited selectivity. PLK1 harbors a regulatory domain, the Polo box domain (PBD), which has a key regulatory function for kinase activity and substrate recognition. We report on 3-bromomethyl-benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (designated: MCC1019) as selective PLK1 inhibitor targeting PLK1 PBD. Indication of electron neutrino appearance from an accelerator-produced off-axis muon neutrino beam

The T2K experiment observes indications of $\nu_\mu\rightarrow \nu_e$ appearance in data accumulated with $1.43\times10^{20}$ protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with $|\Delta m_{23}^2|=2.4\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, $\sin^2 2\theta_{23}=1$ and $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0$, the expected number of such events is 1.5$\pm$0.3(syst.). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7$\times10^{-3}$, equivalent to 2.5$\sigma$ significance. At 90% C.L., the data are consistent with 0.03(0.04)$<\sin^2 2\theta_{13}<$ 0.28(0.34) for $\delta_{\rm CP}=0$ and a normal (inverted) hierarchy.

Compositions of the Volatile Oils of Citrus Macroptera and C. Maxima

The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from the fresh peels of Citrus macroptera Montr. and C maxima(Burm.) Merr. were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The yields of oil ranged from 0.53% in C macroptera to 0.13% in C maxima cultivar (white). Forty-seven compounds were identified in the oils with limonene (55.3-80.0%), dodecyl acrylate (2.2-8.0%), geranial (0.4-3.5%), trans-linalool oxide (1.0-2.8%), α-terpineol (0.7-2.3%), linalool (0.7-1.5%) and cis- linalool oxide (0.5-1.4%) identified as major compounds. The Effect of Bias Field on Dielectric Response in Lead Ferrotantalate Ceramics

Studies of dielectric properties of PbFe1/2Ta1/2O3 ceramics at low- and infra-low-frequencies under bias field over a wide range of temperatures are reported. Applied bias field is found to broaden the ϵ′(Т) maxima shifting positions Тm of the maximums to higher temperatures. Additional anomalies in the dielectric response are revealed at T<Тm. The anomalies in the vicinity of Тm are related to structural change at phase transition, while those observed at TТm – to magneto-electric interactions in PbFe1/2Ta1/2O3.

Absorbing anisotropic and gyrotropic slab between crossed polarizers in parallel light

When a birefringent slab is rotated between two crossed polarizers, the four maxima and four minima of the transmitted intensity occur, as known, at every π/4 radians. If the slab is also optically active, the maxima and minima are arranged in other patterns that may be grouped according to the number of extrema met in one complete turn of the slab: four or eight. All the possible patterns are classified and each is related to some peculiarity of the complex refractive index of the slab.

Elementary triangles in a 2D binary colloidal glass former

Particle positions of a two-dimensional (2D) binary colloidal glass former were measured video-microscopically. Local density-optimized structures of triangles of nearest-neighboring particles (TNNP) were found from the shortest pair-distances. These are referred to as elementary triangles (ET)—exactly one for each 3-particle combination of the two kinds of colloids. Clustering of ET-like TNNP implies larger distances between two particles, which generate the near-zone maxima in the pair-distribution functions. Surface-induced disorder in body-centered-cubic alloys

We present Monte Carlo simulations of surface induced disordering in a model of a binary alloy on a bcc lattice which undergoes a first order bulk transition from the ordered DO3 phase to the disordered A2 phase. The data are analyzed in terms of an effective interface Hamiltonian for a system with several order parameters in the framework of the linear renormalization approach due to Brezin, Halperin and Leibler. We show that the model provides a good description of the system in the vicinity of the interface. Dimensionality effects in restricted bosonic and fermionic systems

The phenomenon of Bose-like condensation, the continuous change of the dimensionality of the particle distribution as a consequence of freezing out of one or more degrees of freedom in the low particle density limit, is investigated theoretically in the case of closed systems of massive bosons and fermions, described by general single-particle hamiltonians. This phenomenon is similar for both types of particles and, for some energy spectra, exhibits features specific to multiple-step Bose-Einstein condensation, for instance the appearance of maxima in the specific heat. Transitions between metastable states in silica clusters

Relaxation phenomena in glasses can be related to jump processes between different minima of the potential energy in the configuration space. These transitions play a key role in the low temperature regime, giving rise to tunneling systems responsible for the anomalous specific heat and thermal conductivity in disordered solids with respect to crystals. By using a recently developed numerical algorithm, we study the potential energy landscape of silica clusters, taking as a starting point the location of first order saddle points. Continuous-wave Lyman-alpha generation with solid-state lasers.

A coherent continuous-wave Lyman-alpha source based on four-wave sum-frequency mixing in mercury vapor has been realized with solid-state lasers. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility is enhanced by the 6(1)S - 7(1)S two-photon resonance and the near 6(1)S-6(3)P one-photon resonance. The phase matching curve for this four-wave mixing scheme is observed for the first time. In addition we investigate the two-photon enhancement of the Lyman-alpha yield and observe that the maxima of Lyman-alpha generation are shifted compared to the two-photon resonances of the different isotopes.
