Effects of prolonged and maintenance strength training on force production, walking, and balance in aging women and men
2012
To examine effects of 21-week twice/week strength training (ST) period followed by an additional 21-week twice or once/week ST period on force production, walking and balance in aging people. Seventy-two women (58 ± 7 years; W) and 63 (58 ± 6 years) men (M) were randomized for the first 21-week ST period: STW and STM, control (C) CW and CM. Training participants were randomized for the second 21-week ST period: once/week STWx1 and STMx1, twice/week STWx2 and STMx2. LegPress, isometric leg extension rate of force development (RFD), walking time, and balance. First 21-week ST period: leg press, RFD, balance, and walking improved significantly in STW and STM. Second 21-week ST period: leg pres…
Cardiorespiratory fitness is not associated with risk of venous thromboembolism: a cohort study
2019
Objectives. The inverse and independent association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and arterial thrombotic disease is well established. However, the potential association between CRF and venous thromboembolism (VTE) is not well known. We aimed to assess the prospective association of CRF with the risk of VTE. Design. Cardiorespiratory fitness, as measured by maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), was assessed using a respiratory gas exchange analyser in 2,249 men aged 42-61 years without a history of VTE at baseline in the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease prospective cohort. Cox-regression models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for VTE. We correcte…
Safety and efficacy of exercise testing with atropine in patients with recent uncomplicated ST elevation acute myocardial infarction
2012
Background: Exercise testing (ET) remains the most accessible and widely used technique for the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) and for the assessment of its severity. Failure to reach 85% of maximal predicted heart rate (MPHR) during exercise may render an ET nondiagnostic for ischemia detection in patients with recent uncomplicated ST elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI). We sought to investigate the injection of atropine in patients who fail to achieve 85% of age-predicted heart rate during ET, defining its safety and efficacy to raise heart rate to adequate levels as well as to determine its effect on ET interpretation. Methods: Between January 2005 and December 2008…
Heart rate recovery after exercise and maximal oxygen uptake in sedentary patients with type 2 diabetes
2015
Aims: Heart rate recovery after exercise (HRR) is an estimate of autonomic modulation of the heart, and has been shown to be inversely associated with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes [1]. Type 2 diabetes is associated with poor exercise tolerance and maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) [2]. Aim of our study was to assess the relationship between HRR and VO2max in sedentary patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Maximal treadmill exercise testing using standard or modified Bruce protocol was performed in 16 (8 males and 8 females) sedentary patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and in 16 (9 males and 7 females) age-matched sedentary non-diabetic controls (ND). HRR (…
Reuse of Food Waste: The Chemical Composition and Health Properties of Pomelo (Citrus maxima) Cultivar Essential Oils
2022
The aim of the present study is to investigate the chemical profile, antioxidant activity, carbohydrate-hydrolysing enzyme inhibition, and hypolipidemic effect of essential oils (EOs) extracted from Sicilian Citrus maxima (pomelo) flavedo. Using gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis (GC-MS) we analysed the Eos of five cultivars of C. maxima, namely, ‘Chadock’, ‘Maxima’, ‘Pyriformis’, ‘Terracciani’, and ‘Todarii’, and their blends. The antioxidant activity was performed by using a multi-target approach using 2,2′-Azino-Bis-3-Ethylbenzothiazoline-6-Sulfonic acid (ABTS), 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reduc…
Maximal Strength Training as a Therapeutic Approach in Long-Standing Anorexia Nervosa: A Case Study of a Woman With Osteopenia, Menstrual Dysfunction…
2018
In persons with anorexia nervosa (AN), compulsive exercise and osteopenia are common symptoms. Although treatment of osteopenia besides weight regain is lacking, maximal strength training (MST) has been found to be effective in other populations. Such training has not been prescribed to those with AN due to uncertainty of tolerance. We therefore examined use of MST in a woman with long-standing AN, osteopenia, menstrual dysfunction, and compulsive exercise. The MST intervention consisted of four exercises: three sets of five repetitions maximum (RM), 3 times per week for 16 weeks. We examined muscle strength, bone mineral density (BMD), AN psychopathology, and compulsive exercise at baseli…

Bakalaura darba pirmajā nodaļā autors apskatīs mārketinga stratēģijas būtību, kā to veido, no kā tā sastāv un kādi ir tās veidi. Darba otrajā nodaļā tiks…
Changes in Fat Oxidation and Body Composition after Combined Exercise Intervention in Sedentary Obese Chinese Adults.
2022
(1) Background: Evidence suggests that aerobic exercise and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) might increase fat oxidation and reduce fat. However, limited research has examined the effects of combining progressive aerobic exercise and HIIT interventions in sedentary adults with overweight and obesity, and differences in its effects between men and women remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of combined progressive aerobic exercise and HIIT (CAEH) on fat oxidation and fat reduction in sedentary Chinese adults and compare sex differences in sedentary adults after seven weeks. (2) Methods: Eighty-four sedentary obese adults were enrolled and allocated …
Effects of non-tracking solar collector orientation on energy production : photovoltaic systems
2012
Abstract: This Master's thesis proposes a new method for calculating the optimum tilt and orientation angle of a fitted solar collector. In addition to using geographical data, this method takes into account the radiation data and weather statistics of prospective locations. This makes the calculations valid not only for certain latitudes, but also for certain radiation and weather conditions. Calculations were done by estimating the energy production of a given solar array using a sequence of different tilt angles and orientation angles. Special attention was given to shaded solar arrays and arrays made up of photovoltaic modules. Specific radiation and weather data was used for both locat…
Extremal Irregular Digraphs
2018
A digraph is called irregular if its distinct vertices have distinct degree pairs. An irregular digraph is called minimal (maximal) if the removal of any arc (addition of any new arc) results in a non-irregular digraph. It is easily seen that the minimum sizes among irregular n-vertex whether digraphs or oriented graphs are the same and are asymptotic to (√2/3) n3/2; maximum sizes, however, are asymptotic to n2 and n2/2, respectively. Let s stand for the sum of initial positive integers, s = 1, 3, 6, . . . . An oriented graph Hs and a digraph Fs, both large (in terms of the size), minimal irregular, and on any such s vertices, s ≥ 21, are constructed in [Large minimal irregular digraphs, Op…
