Training-induced changes in neuromuscular performance under voluntary and reflex conditions.

1986

To investigate training-induced changes in neuromuscular performance under voluntary and reflex contractions, 11 male subjects went through heavy resistance (high loads of 70-120% of one maximum repetition) and 10 male subjects through explosive type (low loads with high contraction velocities) strength training three times a week for 24 weeks. A large increase (13.9%, p less than 0.01) in voluntary unilateral maximal knee extension strength with only slight and insignificant changes in time of isometric force production were observed during heavy resistance strength training. Explosive type strength training resulted in a small insignificant increase in maximal strength but in considerable…

Fatigue and Recovery After High-Intensity Exercise Part II: Recovery Interventions

2004

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of three types of recovery intervention to neuromuscular function after high-intensity uphill running exercise. The 20-min recovery interventions were (i) passive, (ii) active (running at 50 % of maximal aerobic speed), and (iii) low-frequency electromyostimulation. Evoked twitch and maximal voluntary contractions of knee extensor muscles (KE) and EMG of the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis were analysed immediately after the exercise, 10 min after the end of the recovery periods, and 65 min after the exercise (Post65). An all-out running test was also performed 80 min after the end of the fatiguing exercise. No significant differenc…

Multi-domain impact of elosufase alfa in Morquio A syndrome in the pivotal phase III trial

2015

Objective: To report and discuss the multi-domain impact of elosulfase alfa, with focus on tertiary and composite endpoints, in the 24-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial in patients with Morquio A syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis IVA). Methods: Patients with Morquio A syndrome >= 5 aged years were randomized 1:1:1 to elosulfase alfa 2.0 mg/kg/week (qw; N = 58), elosulfase alfa 2.0 mg/kg/every other week (qow; N = 59), or placebo (N = 59) for 24 weeks. Primary and secondary efficacy measures were 6-minute walk test (6MWT; primary), 3-minute stair climb test (3-MSCT) and urinary keratan sulfate (KS). Safety was also evaluated. Tertiary efficacy measures included r…

Universal spectral profile and dynamic evolution of muscle activation: A hallmark of muscle type and physiological state

2020

The skeletal muscle is an integrated multicomponent system with complex dynamics of continuous myoelectrical activation of various muscle types across time scales to facilitate muscle coordination among units and adaptation to physiological states. To understand the multiscale dynamics of neuromuscular activity, we investigated spectral characteristics of different muscle types across time scales and their evolution with physiological states. We hypothesized that each muscle type is characterized by a specific spectral profile, reflecting muscle composition and function, that remains invariant over time scales and is universal across subjects. Furthermore, we hypothesized that the myoelectr…

Evidences of cannabinoids-induced modulation of paroxysmal events in an experimental model of partial epilepsy in the rat.

2009

The anticonvulsant effect of cannabinoids (CB) has been shown to be mediated by the activation of the CB(1) receptor. This study evaluates the anticonvulsant activity of (R)-(+)-[2,3-dihydro-5-methyl-3-(4-morpholinylmethyl) pyrrolo[1,2,3-de]-1,4-benzoxazin-6-Yl]-1-naphthalenylmethanone (WIN55,212-2, CB agonist) alone or preceded by the administration of N-(piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-iodophenyl)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide (AM251, selective CB(1) antagonist) in an experimental in vivo model of complex partial seizures (maximal dentate gyrus activation - MDA) in the rat. WIN55,212-2 (21mgkg(-1)) exerted an anticonvulsant effect, significantly reduced by the pre-treatme…

Predicting maximum annual values of event soil loss by USLE-type models

2017

Abstract Previous experimental investigations showed that a large proportion of total plot soil erosion over a long time period is generally due to relatively few, large storms. Consequently, erosion models able to accurately predict the highest plot soil loss values have practical importance since they could allow to improve the design of soil conservation practices in an area of interest. At present USLE-based models are attractive from a practical point of view, since the input data are generally easy to obtain. The USLE was developed with specific reference to the mean annual temporal scale but it was also applied at the event scale. Other models, such as the USLE-M and the USLE-MM, app…

Recent advances in machine learning for maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) prediction : A review

2022

Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) is the maximum amount of oxygen attainable by a person during exercise. VO2 max is used in different domains including sports and medical sciences and is usually measured during an incremental treadmill or cycle ergometer test. The drawback of directly measuring VO2 max using the maximal test is that it is expensive and requires a fixed and controlled protocol. During the last decade, various machine learning models have been developed for VO2 max prediction and numerous studies have attempted to predict VO2 max using data from submaximal and non-exercise tests. This article gives an overview of the machine learning models developed over the past five years (…

Safety and feasibility of atropine added in patients with sub-maximal heart rate during exercise myocardial perfusion SPECT.

2006

Failure to reach 80% of maximal predicted heart rate (HR) during exercise may render a myocardial perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) study non-diagnostic for ischemia detection. We sought to investigate the injection of atropine in patients who fail to achieve 80% of age-predicted HR during exercise performed for myocardial perfusion SPECT (MPS), defining its safety and efficacy to raise HR to adequate levels as well as its effect on MPS interpretation.Between January 2002 and December 2004, we studied 3,150 consecutive patients (2,253 men and 897 women, mean age 55 +/- 6 years) who were referred to a single office-based nuclear cardiology laboratory for MPS using …

Clustering-Assisted 3D Beamforming for Throughput Maximization in mmWave Networks

2021

Beamforming schemes have been widely used to improve network throughput in 5G mmWave networks. However, 3D beamforming schemes have hereto not been investigated in this context. In this work, a cluster-assisted 3D beamforming scheme is proposed to optimize the downtilt angle for network coverage and throughput maximization. User Equipment (UEs) are clustered based on inter-user and the inter-cluster distances. The interference is accounted from the adjacent clusters and thus frequency resources can be assigned to the non-adjacent clusters. Optimal downtilt angles are obtained for every cluster to maximize the throughput while considering the interference from adjacent clusters. 3D beam patt…
