Optimization of net power density in Reverse Electrodialysis

2019

Abstract Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) extracts electrical energy from the salinity difference between two solutions using selective ion exchange membranes. In RED, conditions yielding a large net power density (NPD) are generally desired, due to the still large cost of the membranes. NPD depends on a large number of physical and geometric parameters. Some of these, for example the inlet concentrations of concentrate and diluate, can be regarded as “scenario” variables, imposed by external constraints (e.g., availability) or chosen by different criteria than NPD maximization. Others, namely the thicknesses HCONC, HDIL and the velocities UCONC, UDIL in the concentrate and diluate channels, c…

Limit order placement as an utility maximization problem and the origin of power law distribution of limit order prices

2006

I consider the problem of the optimal limit order price of a financial asset in the framework of the maximization of the utility function of the investor. The analytical solution of the problem gives insight on the origin of the recently empirically observed power law distribution of limit order prices. In the framework of the model, the most likely proximate cause of this power law is a power law heterogeneity of traders' investment time horizons .

The EM imaging reconstruction method in γ-ray astronomy

1998

Abstract The simpler imaging reconstruction methods used for γ-ray coded mask telescopes are based on correlation methods, very fast and simple-to-use but with limitations in the reconstructed image. To improve these results, other reconstruction methods have been developed, such as the maximum entropy methods or the Iterative Removal Of Sources (IROS). However, such kind of methods are slower and can be impracticable for very complex telescopes. In this paper we present an alternative image reconstruction method, based on an iterative maximum likelihood algorithm called the EM algorithm, easy to implement and that can be successfully used for not very complex coded mask systems, as is the …

Modelling of Magnetic Resonance Spectra Using Mixtures for Binned and Truncated Data

2007

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) provides the biochemical composition of a tissue under study. This information is useful for the in-vivo diagnosis of brain tumours. Prior knowledge of the relative position of the organic compound contributions in the MRS suggests the development of a probabilistic mixture model and its EM-based Maximum Likelihood Estimation for binned and truncated data. Experiments for characterizing and classifying Short Time Echo (STE) spectra from brain tumours are reported.

An optimized time screening algorithm for ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations

1998

We have developed a model-independent time screening optimization algorithm to cope with significant contamination spikes in the ROSAT PSPC/HRI bacground light-curves. The rejection criteria are based on the maximization of faint sources signal-to-noise ratio. The algorithm tuning parameters have been optimized through performing a wide set of runs on both simulated and real data. We have verified that the application of our selection criteria to the case of long exposure PSPC observations yields an increase of the number of faint sources ( SNR ) of up to 100% with a rejection of up to the 8% of the exposure time. At the same time, we obtain an average signal-to-noise ratio gain of 3% for t…

A probabilistic framework for automatic prostate segmentation with a statistical model of shape and appearance

2011

International audience; Prostate volume estimation from segmented prostate contours in Trans Rectal Ultrasound (TRUS) images aids in diagnosis and treatment of prostate diseases, including prostate cancer. However, accurate, computationally efficient and automatic segmentation of the prostate in TRUS images is a challenging task owing to low Signal-To-Noise-Ratio (SNR), speckle noise, micro-calcifications and heterogeneous intensity distribution inside the prostate region. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic framework for propagation of a parametric model derived from Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of prior shape and posterior probability values to achieve the prostate segmentatio…

An algebraic approach to the study of multipartite entanglement

2012

A simple algebraic approach to the study of multipartite entanglement for pure states is introduced together with a class of suitable functionals able to detect entanglement. On this basis, some known results are reproduced. Indeed, by investigating the properties of the introduced functionals, it is shown that a subset of such class is strictly connected to the purity. Moreover, a direct and basic solution to the problem of the simultaneous maximization of three appropriate functionals for three-qubit states is provided, confirming that the simultaneous maximization of the entanglement for all possible bipartitions is compatible only with the structure of GHZ-states.

Are decisions in a real choice experiment consistent with reservation prices elicited with BDM 'auction'? The case of French baguettes

2014

Abstract The aim of this study was to compare consumer choices observed in a real choice experiment and their reservation prices elicited with the BDM mechanism in order to assess the rationality of participant behaviors. One hundred and seventy-seven participants tested four French baguettes in each task. For the real choice experiment, participants were faced with 17 scenarios (17 × 4 baguette-price combinations). In each method, participants could select a “no purchase” option. Comparing choices and reservation prices made it possible to assess the rationality of participant behaviors. From a strict economic standpoint, 50% of observed choices were fully rational. When one baguette was a…

Performance assessment of institutional photovoltaic based energy system for operating as a micro-grid

2020

Abstract A building integrated photovoltaic (PV) system with energy storage within an institution may need appropriate coordination among distributed energy sources (DERs). It is required to have an appropriate energy management strategy to improve system performance as well as to operate it as a micro-grid during the grid outage condition. In this paper, TERI’s (India) Retreat Facility’s energy system has been used, and its performance with a distributed generator has been assessed with operational strategies for fulfilling the institutional load demand in coordination with the PV, grid and battery storage; and with possibility of operating it as a micro-grid during the grid outage period …

Using active learning to adapt remote sensing image classifiers

2011

The validity of training samples collected in field campaigns is crucial for the success of land use classification models. However, such samples often suffer from a sample selection bias and do not represent the variability of spectra that can be encountered in the entire image. Therefore, to maximize classification performance, one must perform adaptation of the first model to the new data distribution. In this paper, we propose to perform adaptation by sampling new training examples in unknown areas of the image. Our goal is to select these pixels in an intelligent fashion that minimizes their number and maximizes their information content. Two strategies based on uncertainty and cluster…
