Mometasone furoate delivered via Breezhaler and Twisthaler in patients with asthma

2019

Introduction: Mometasone furoate (MF), an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), is approved for the treatment of asthma. Previous studies suggest that MF Twisthaler® doses of 800 and 200 µg and MF Breezhaler® doses of 320 and 80 µg would elicit similar lung function effects, respectively. These MF doses are also used in an indacaterol/MF combination in development for asthma. Since sensitivity to ICS is variable, individual patients’ ICS sensitivity (as measured by FEV1 decline on ICS weaning) was used to build a robust analysis model for the study data. Methods: This was a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel-group, non-inferiority study of 739 adolescents and adults with asthma. MF wa…

Efficacy of subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy with grass allergens for seasonal allergic rhinitis: a meta-analysis–based comparison

2012

Background: Subcutaneous (SCIT) and sublingual (SLIT) immunotherapy are the 2 most prescribed routes for administering allergen-specific immunotherapy. They were shown to be effective in control of symptoms and in reducing rescue medication use in patients with allergic diseases, but their effectiveness has to be balanced against side effects. In recent years, SLIT has been increasingly prescribed, instead of SCIT, because of improved safety and easy administration. Objective: We assessed which route is the most effective in the treatment of patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis to grass pollen. Methods: An indirect meta-analysis–based comparison between SCIT and SLIT was performed. Trea…

Validity of automated refraction after segmented refractive multifocal intraocular lens implantation

2017

Aim To evaluate the clinical utility of automated refraction (AR) and keratometry (KR) compared with subjective or manifest refraction (MR) after cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery with implantation of Lentis Mplus X (Oculentis GmbH) refractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL). Methods Eighty-six eyes implanted with the Lentis Mplus X multifocal IOL were included. MR was performed in all patients followed by three consecutive AR measurements using the Topcon KR-8000 autorefractor. Assessment of repeatability of consecutive AR before and after dilation with phenylephrine 10%, and comparison of the AR and KR with MR using vector analysis were performed at 3mo follow-up. Results Ana…

Preemptive analgesia in dental implant surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

2021

Background To assess the effectiveness of preemptive analgesia in dental implant surgery in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Material and Methods The present study was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement and registered in PROSPERO database CRD42020168757. A search without restrictions regarding language or date of publication was conducted in six databases and gray literature. A random effect meta-analysis compared the efficacy of preemptive analgesia compared to placebo through pooled OR and 95%CI. The interpretation of results followed the certainty of evidence using the Grading of Rec…

Effects of Coenzyme Q10 on Statin-Induced Myopathy

2015

Abstract Objective To evaluate the efficacy of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation on statin-induced myopathy. Participants and Methods We searched the MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and EMBASE databases (November 1, 1987, to May 1, 2014) to identify randomized controlled trials investigating the impact of CoQ10 on muscle pain and plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity as 2 measures of statin-induced myalgia. Two independent reviewers extracted data on study characteristics, methods, and outcomes. Results We included 6 studies with 302 patients receiving statin therapy: 5 studies with 226 participants evaluated the effect of CoQ10 supplementation on plasma CK activity, and 5 studies (4 u…

Systematic review and meta-analysis of the efficacy and safety of minocycline in schizophrenia

2017

ObjectiveOur aim was to perform an updated systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy and safety of adjunctive minocycline as a treatment of schizophrenia.MethodsWe conducted a PubMed/Scopus database search from inception to 3 February 2016 for randomized, placebo-controlled trials (RCTs), open non-randomized studies, and case reports/series evaluating minocycline in patients with schizophrenia. Random-effects meta-analysis of positive, negative, depressive, and cognitive symptom rating scales, discontinuation and adverse effects rates calculating standardized mean difference (SMD), and risk ratios±95% confidence intervals (CI95%) were calculated.ResultsSix RCTs were eligible (mino…
