Outlining the impact of intellectual capital accumulation and depletion processes on the performance of an insurance firm: a dynamic resource-based p…
2014
This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework on how Intellectual Capital (IC) accumulation and depletion processes are dynamically interrelated with firm performance. Such a framework makes explicit the relationships between policy levers, strategic resources, drivers, end-results and performance indicators through a Dynamic Resource-based perspective. Such an approach matches the Resource based perspective and the System Dynamics (SD) methodology. This paper argues that in order to explain a firm superior performance, it is not sufficient to look at the endowment of strategic resources in a given moment of time; it is instead required to investigate the dynamics of company strategic r…
Optical sensor for remote estimation of alcohol concentration in blood stream
2013
Abstract The purpose of this manuscript is to validate our recently developed novel optical approach for extraction of remote vibration sources as a successful technique to estimate the alcohol concentration in blood stream. This technique is based on the tracking of temporal changes of reflected secondary speckle patterns produced in human skin when being illuminated by a laser beam. Since the skin’s vibrations profile is changed due to the alcohol in the blood stream, the extraction of the vibration profile can be translated into the corresponding alcohol concentration values by means of defining several parameters acting as indicators for the presence of alcohol in the blood stream. We h…
Parallel distance transforms on pyramid machines: Theory and implementation
1990
Abstract A distance transform of a binary image is an array each of whose elements gives the distance from the corresponding pixel to the closest ‘1’ in the binary image. Distance transforms have uses in image matching and shape analysis, among other applications. We present a parallel algorithm for weighted distance transforms that runs particularly efficiently on hierarchical cellular-logic machines, a subclass of the architectures known as pyramid machines. The algorithm computes the 3–4 distance transform; however it can be readily adapted to the city-block (‘Manhattan’) and chessboard distance measures. The algorithm runs in O(M) time, for an M × M image. Since it avoids using arithmet…
Current characterisation for ultra low power wireless body area networks
2010
The emerging area of body area networks (BAN) imposes challenging requirements on hardware and software to achieve the desired lifetimes for certain devices such as long term medical implants. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to the measurement and characterisation of the energy consumption of BAN devices. The approach uses a low cost energy auditing circuit and addresses the problem of accurately measuring low-level current consumption. This new technique will allow precise and analytical measurements of systems and components in terms of energy. This will help circuit designers minimise power consumption in BAN devices. Software engineers might use this approach to validate and …
Intelligent eye
2010
This paper describes Intelligent Eye, a mobile phone interactive leisure guide that offers location-based multimedia information. The information offered is related to the user's position, so the main goal of this work is the development of an efficient system to detect where the user is pointing his/her camera at by means of a content-based image retrieval algorithm (CBIR). The CBIR procedure uses color histograms in the HS color space extracted from images, and employs Kullback-Leibler divergence as the similarity measure. Intelligent Eye can be used in a wide range of camera-equipped mobile phones; however, efficiency is improved if GPS data is available. In order to outperform other sys…
How to Use the DHT22 Sensor for Measuring Temperature and Humidity with the Arduino Board
2016
Abstract The objective of this paper is to achieve a functional system in terms of hardware and software, to measure temperature and humidity. Also, this system will allow to monitoring the time. In this, we use an Arduino board with interfacing a sensor placed in local environment to measure temperature and humidity. The paper aims to achieve the following goals: - achieving a functional system in terms of hardware and software that allows measuring and monitoring temperature, humidity and the time; - using a development board for the communication with the sensor and clock; - implementation a program that allows requirements.
An Innovative Similarity Measure for Sentence Plagiarism Detection
2016
We propose and experimentally assess Semantic Word Error Rate (SWER), an innovative similarity measure for sentence plagiarism detection. SWER introduces a complex approach based on latent semantic analysis, which is capable of outperforming the accuracy of competitor methods in plagiarism detection. We provide principles and functionalities of SWER, and we complement our analytical contribution by means of a significant preliminary experimental analysis. Derived results are promising, and confirm to use the goodness of our proposal.
Implementation and Experimental Tests of a Management System for MV/LV Distribution Grids
2019
The continuous monitoring of network power flows and the remote control of Distributed Generators and Energy Storage Systems are the essential elements to allow a full exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources and their real integration in distribution networks. Thus in the paper a management system is presented for load flow monitoring in MV/LV distribution network. Moreover, on the basis of calculated power flows, the management system is able to send control commands to DGs and ESSs, to vary their power production or power factor or eventually to disconnect them in order to maintain the network stability. The proposed solution was really implemented in the MV network of Ustica Island, dev…
The Computer Control Software for MAMI
1980
The computer control system of the Mainz Microtron is designed to keep track with the modular and step-by-step construction of the three accelerator stages. The system is up to now based on two loosely coupled HP1000 minicomputers, interfaced via CAMAC to the accelerator components and to the operator desk. The control software is divided into several layers of portable processes distributed to both computers. Communication between the processes, access to the data bank and the routing of CAMAC interrupts are handled via a message system which operates with symbolic addresses.
The Influence of Requirements in Software Model Development in an Industrial Environment
2017
Textual description of requirements is a specification technique that is widely used in industry, where time is key for success. How requirements are specified textually greatly depends on human factors. In order to study how requirements processing is affected by the level of detail in textual descriptions, this paper compares enriched textual requirements specifications with non-enriched ones. To do this, we have conducted an experiment in industry with 19 engineers of CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliares de Ferrocarril), which is a supplier of railway solutions. The experiment is a crossover design that analyzes efficiency, effectiveness, and perceived difficulty starting from a written spec…
