A posteriori error identities for nonlinear variational problems

2015

A posteriori error estimation methods are usually developed in the context of upper and lower bounds of errors. In this paper, we are concerned with a posteriori analysis in terms of identities, i.e., we deduce error relations, which holds as equalities. We discuss a general form of error identities for a wide class of convex variational problems. The left hand sides of these identities can be considered as certain measures of errors (expressed in terms of primal/dual solutions and respective approximations) while the right hand sides contain only known approximations. Finally, we consider several examples and show that in some simple cases these identities lead to generalized forms of the …

The Contribution of Electrical Resistivity Measurements to the Analysis of Landslide Events

2005

In order to gain insight into the study of natural avalanches dynamics, we illustrate a statistical model based on a dissipative dynamical variable associated to a position dependent factor of safety field. This model, as experimentally demonstrated, is able to reproduce the complex structure of landslide events, such as power-law distributions. In this paper, we introduce an explicit dependence of the safety factor on the electrical resistivity to simulate landslide events in pyroclastic soils. An application of the model to data acquired in a test area characterized by flowslide events (Monte Albino, Campania Region - South Italy) bear witness the relevant role played by the resistivity m…

Effetti “inibitori” della interdittiva antimafia e bilanciamento fra principi costituzionali: alcune questioni di legittimità dedotte in una recente …

2021

Moving from a very recent order of submission to the Italian Constitutional Court, the paper analyses some of the critical profiles that – in the last years – are related to the institute if the s.c. “interdittiva antimafia” (i.e. “anti-mafia interdictive), among the wider discipline provided against the organized crime. Regarding the parameters evoked by the Administrative Judge, it is intended to reflect on the delicate balancing procedure between rights and liberties that – equally guaranteed by the Constitution – inevitably collide as the aforementioned institute is enforced and that require, then, a particular care by the proceeding Public Administration: the private economic initiativ…

How much can regional agri-environmental measures contribute to SOC stocking in the soils of Sicily?

2014

Soils have a great potential in stocking soil organic carbon SOC, but how much can human activities, and particularly agricultural ones, contribute to increase (or decrease) the SOC content? Which kind of agricultural practices are the most effective? From the soil database of Sicily we have selected 52 profiles, whose first 40 cm from the soil surface were analyzed for the SOC, of which 15 analyzed also for nitrogen N content, localized in the clayey hills and limestone marine terraces of the western Sicily, cultivated with grain crops and orchards (mainly olive groves and vineyards), surveyed and analyzed in a period from 1995 to 2008. By interviews to the farmers owners of those parcels,…

Reliability of liver stiffness measurement in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: the effects of body mass index.

2011

Background Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) using transient elastography (TE) is used to stage fibrosis in patients with liver disease, diagnostic reliability and the factors affecting its performance in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are incompletely understood. Aim To assess LSM. Methods Consecutive NAFLD patients (n = 169), assessed by liver biopsy (Kleiner score), anthropometrical, biochemical and metabolic features, underwent LSM using TE with standard M probe. Results Liver stiffness measurement was not reliable in 23 patients (14%) due to obesity. Among patients with a reliable TE, a LSM value >7.25 kPa was the best cut-off for predicting significant fibrosi…

A comparison between the single ring pressure infiltrometer and simplified falling head techniques

2013

Testing the relative performances of the single ring pressure infiltrometer (PI) and simplified falling head (SFH) techniques to determine the field saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Kfs, at the near point scale may help to better establish the usability of these techniques for interpreting and simulating hydrological processes. A sampling of 10 Sicilian sites showed that the measured Kfs was generally higher with the SFH technique than the PI one, with statistically significant differences by a factor varying from 3 to 192, depending on the site. A short experiment with the SFH technique yielded higher Kfs values because a longer experiment with the PI probably promoted short-term swe…

Fission yield studies with SPIG-equipped IGISOL : a novel method for nuclear data measurements

2010

This thesis work consists of two sections. In the first section, the development of a so-called Laser Ion Source Trap (LIST) device is described. The LIST device is based on a double SPIG (SextuPole Ion Guide) system, providing the possibility to improve the elemental selectivity of the IGISOL method via highly discriminative laser ionization occurring outside the ion guide. The improved selectivity enables the production of isotopically pure beams. The double SPIG can be used without laser ionization and replaces the conventional skimmer electrode. In this work, the SPIG is compared to the skimmer and is shown to remarkably improve both the efficiency and beam quality of the IGISOL facilit…

Testing flow resistance equation for rill flow

2018

At first, in this paper a flow resistance equation for rill flow, deduced applying dimensional analysis and self-similarity theory, is presented. The incomplete self-similarity hypothesis is used for establishing the flow velocity distribution whose integration gives the theoretical expression of the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor. Then the deduced theoretical resistance equation, which is calibrated by some measurements of flow velocity, water depth, cross section area, wetted perimeter and bed slope carried out in 106 reaches of some rills modelled on an experimental plot, is tested using the literature data by Abrahams et al. (1996), Strohmeier et al. (2014) and Peng et al. (2015) for ri…
