Temperature Measurement by Diffusion-Weighted Imaging

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) thermometry is a magnetic resonance-based imaging tool that allows the noninvasive measurement of brain core temperature. Although only applicable to cerebrospinal fluid, it is thought to be potentially useful in assessing the thermal pathophysiology of the brain in both patients and healthy subjects. The objective of this article is to provide a concise but thorough review of the basic physical principles and the principal applications of DWI thermometry as a potential method to elucidate the pathophysiology of several brain diseases and neurologic syndromes.

Morelloflavone, a novel biflavonoid inhibitor of human secretory phospholipase A2 with anti-inflammatory activity

Abstract The flavanonylflavone morelloflavone inhibited secretory phospholipase A 2 (PLA 2 ) in vitro , with a high potency on the human recombinant synovial and bee venom enzymes ( IC 50 = 0.9 and 0.6 μM, respectively). The inhibition was apparently irreversible. In contrast, the compound was inactive on cytosolic PLA 2 activity from human monocytes. Morelloflavone scavenged reactive oxygen species generated by human neutrophils ( IC 50 = 2.7 and 1.8 μM for luminol and lucigenin, respectively) but did not modify cellular responses such as degranulation or eicosanoid release. Association of first trimester fetal heart rate and nuchal translucency with preterm birth.

To evaluate whether first trimester fetal heart rate (FHR) and nuchal translucency (NT) associate with preterm birth (PTB).This was a comparative case-control study of 518 normal pregnancies with no history of PTB, of which 272 delivered at term (TB) and 246 progressed to spontaneous PTB prior to 37, 34, 32, and 28 weeks. Cognitive impairment after a stroke has a direct impact on patients’ disability. In particular, impairment of Executive Functions (EFs) interferes with re-adaptation to daily life. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often associated with hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Blood pressure (BP) variability is part of the assessment of cardiovascular risk. In OSA, BP variability has been studied mainly as very short-term (beat-by-beat) and short-term (24-hour BP profile) variability. BP measured on consecutive heartbeats has been demonstrated to be highly variable, due to repeated peaks during sleep, so that an accurate assessment of nocturnal BP levels in OSA may require peculiar methodologies.
