Distance functions are a fundamental ingredient of classification and clustering procedures, and this holds true also in the particular case of microarray data. In the general data mining and classification literature, functions such as Euclidean distance or Pearson correlation have gained their status of de facto standards thanks to a considerable amount of experimental validation. Riming of Graupel: Wind Tunnel Investigations of Collection Kernels and Growth Regimes

Abstract Laboratory experiments were carried out in the vertical wind tunnel in Mainz, Germany, to study the collision coalescence growth of single spherical ice particles having initial radii between 290 and 380 μm while they were freely floated in a laminar flow containing a cloud of supercooled droplets with radii between 10 and 20 μm. The experiments were performed in a temperature range between −8 and −12°C, where riming proceeds in the atmosphere, and with cloud liquid water contents lying between 0.9 and 1.6 g m−3 (i.e., values typically found in mixed-phase clouds). Dynamics of mild strombolian activity on Mt. Etna

Abstract Here we report the first measurements of gas masses released during a rare period of strombolian activity at the Bocca Nuova crater, Mt. Etna, Sicily. UV camera data acquired for 195 events over an ≈ 27 minute period (27th July 2012) indicate erupted SO2 masses ranging from ≈ 0.1 to ≈ 14 kg per event, with corresponding total gas masses of ≈ 0.1 to 74 kg. Thus, the activity was characterised by more frequent and smaller events than typically associated with strombolian activity on volcanoes such as Stromboli. ADCP velocity profiles analisys in the Castellammare gulf

Velocity profiles have been collected in three points within the Castellammare gulf at around 1500 m far from the coastline. This area is characterized by the presence of an aquaculture farm that positioned 5 floating cages in this zone. The impact of this activity on the environment strictly depends on the currents and water exchange. A modified applicative criterion of the physical model concept for evaluating plot soil erosion predictions

Abstract In this paper, the physical model concept by Nearing (1998. Catena 32: 15–22) was assessed. Soil loss data collected on plots of different  widths (2–8 m), lengths (11–44 m) and steepnesses (14.9–26.0%), equipped in south and central Italy, were used. Differences in width between plots of given length and steepness determined a lower data correlation and more deviation of the fitted regression line from the identity one. A coefficient of determination between measured, M , and predicted, P , soil losses of 0.77 was representative of the best-case prediction scenario, according to Nearing (1998). Why Untrained Control Groups Provide Invalid Baselines: A Reply to Dienes and Altmann

Dienes and Altmann argue that an untrained control group provides a reliable baseline to measure artificial grammar learning. In this reply, we first provide a fictitious example to demonstrate that this assessment is faulty. We then analyse why this assessment is wrong, and we reiterate the solution proposed in Reber and Perruchet (this issue) for a proper control. Probing dynamics of dense suspensions: three-dimensional cross-correlation technique

We describe the realization of a novel three-dimensional (3D) cross-correlation scheme, which provides the possibility to measure dynamic structure factors of highly concentrated colloidal samples without contributions of multiply scattered light. The apparatus is easier to align and more compact than the two-colour cross-correlation apparatus, which is commercially available. This should make the 3D cross-correlation set-up more convenient for routine applications, for example in industrial laboratories. We describe the set-up and discuss some special features of the optical components.
