Polynomial Regression and Measurement Error

2020

Many of the phenomena of interest in information systems (IS) research are nonlinear, and it has consequently been recognized that by applying linear statistical models (e.g., linear regression), we may ignore important aspects of these phenomena. To address this issue, IS researchers are increasingly applying nonlinear models to their datasets. One popular analytical technique for the modeling and analysis of nonlinear relationships is polynomial regression, which in its simplest form fits a "U-shaped" curve to the data. However, the use of polynomial regression can be problematic when the independent variables are contaminated with measurement error, and the implications of error can be m…

Optical diagnostic of temperature in rocket engines by coherent Raman techniques

2004

Abstract This article reviews the study of Raman line shapes of molecular species involved in reactive media, such flames or engines, at high temperature and high pressure. This study is of interest from a fundamental as well as from a practical point of view with regards to the CARS temperature diagnostic of GH2–LOX combustion systems. We will particularly draw attention to recent investigations by means of Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy (SRS) in H2–H2O mixtures at temperature up to 1800 K. Whereas H2–X systems usually exhibit large inhomogeneous effects, due to the speed dependence of the collisional parameters, the absence of such apparent inhomogeneous signatures in the H2–H2O system all…

Methodology and technology for peripheral and central blood pressure and blood pressure variability measurement: current status and future directions…

2016

Office blood pressure measurement has been the basis for hypertension evaluation for almost a century. However, the evaluation of blood pressure out of the office using ambulatory or self-home monitoring is now strongly recommended for the accurate diagnosis in many, if not all, cases with suspected hypertension. Moreover, there is evidence that the variability of blood pressure might offer prognostic information that is independent of the average blood pressure level. Recently, advancement in technology has provided noninvasive evaluation of central (aortic) blood pressure, which might have attributes that are additive to the conventional brachial blood pressure measurement. This position …

An Energy Autonomous and Battery-Free Measurement System for Ambient Light Power with Time Domain Readout Measurement

2021

Internet of Things (IoT) provides more and more adequate infrastructures for many applications and advanced services. This context promotes the ability to satisfy the growing demand for innovative measuring systems, in- creasingly popular with intelligent nodes, totally wireless, easy to install that require the least possible maintenance. This paper aims to contribute to the state-of-the-art with an energy-autonomous and battery-free measurement platform designed to measure the ambient light power when its level exceeds the Limit of Detection (LoD) threshold. The proposed system consists of a single photovoltaic transducer to harvest energy and simultaneously detect ambient light. The resu…

Propagation of precipitation measurement biases into the hydraulic modelling of urban drainage systems – A case study of the Parco D’Orleans sub-urba…

2020

Aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of Precipitation Measurement Biases (PMBs) of tippingbucket rain gauges onto the hydraulic modelling of urban drainage networks. As a case study, the monitored experimental suburban catchment of Parco d’Orleans located in the University Campus of Palermo, Italy and managed since 1987 by the Department of Engineering of the University of Palermo is considered. . Two tipping-bucket rain gauges provide a good spatial coverage of the catchment area and an acoustic level gauge is installed at the outlet of the drainage network for flow mesaurements. Contemporary high temporal resolution rainfall and runoff data series are available between 1993 to 1998…

Hyper-concentrated flow and surface velocity estimation by digital imaging technique: a study case

2015

This paper investigates the utility of digital imaging technique for performing surface velocity measurements of hyper-concentrated flows. The analysis is conducted with the aid of data collected in a scale laboratory flume constructed at the Hydraulic laboratory of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Aerospatial and of Materials Engineering (DICAM) – University of Palermo (Italy). In particular the present paper describes the setup of a laboratory test and the applicability of a fully digital imaging approach.

On the influence of context-based complexity on information search patterns: An individual perspective

2014

Although context-based complexity measured as the similarity and conflict across alternatives is dependent on individual preference structures, existing studies investigating the influence of context-based complexity on information search patterns have largely ignored that context-based complexity is user- and preference-dependent. Addressing this research gap, this article elicits the individual preferences of decision makers by using the pairwise-comparison-based preference measurement (PCPM) technique and records individuals' search patterns using eye tracking. Our results show that an increased context-based complexity leads to an increase in information acquisition and the use of a mor…

Applying Dynamic Performance Management to Public Emergency Management: An Analysis of the Wenchuan Earthquake

2020

Previous studies in public emergency management confirm that collaboration assumes a relevant role in strengthening society’s capacity to cope with complex phenomena, such as disasters. However, empirical researches on emergency management show problems in performance measurement, mainly in employing narrow measures focusing on the results of single organisations rather than the entire system. Starting from a Chinese earthquake (Wenchuan) case, as an example, we use the dynamic performance management approach to develop a performance framework. This framework aims at investigating the interrelationships of different actors involved in emergency management and designing appropriate public em…
